Sheila handled my divorce case with tact and professionalism. Melissa kept me informed at every point in the process. Sheila's familiarity with the opposing attorney made me particularly comfortable. I am very pleased with the outcome and will use Sheila for future legal needs.

Sheila and her team very capably picked up my divorce case after I had to dismiss my initial overly aggressive attorney. Sheila came up to speed very quickly and had formal proceedings rescheduled in order to respond appropriately and sensitively. Several things were impressive, some almost immediately… Responsiveness – Melissa (her very capable paralegal) was quickly available to answer questions (and I had a lot of questions) and would pass those on if needed. If Sheila was not available, then her attorney colleague Kathy Fahey quickly (and ably) stepped in. I was also able to pop into the Groton office quickly, from time to time. Emotional sensitivity – This was extremely important in this case, as I am sure that it is in almost all divorce cases. The goal was to get to a settlement before going to court (and we did get to agreement), and the chances of that happening were enormously increased by Sheila’s (and her team’s) sensitivity to emotions – to be adversarial without sensitivity would have been a disaster. Clarity – Sheila and her team were clear about what was required of the courts, what forms had to be filled out, etc. Melissa kindly supplied an electronic copy of the required financial form and I was able to fill it out myself. Also, Sheila is a realist – she has a good idea of what a reasonable divorce outcome should look like and what a court will accept, and she advocated what was reasonable. I appreciate that point of view since it did not raise unrealistic expectations. It is one thing to advocate for your client’s position, it is another thing to be overly aggressive. Summary – If you have a divorce case pending, I highly recommend Sheila and her team to increase your chances of obtaining a good outcome.

I utilized Sheila and her team for my divorce as I felt they would fight for me and be my advocates in the courtroom. They did not disappoint me. They listened to me and my desires for an outcome and did their best to make that happen. As emotional as I was, they stayed professional and calm which helped get me through the entire process.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
