From our initial conversation to the resolution of my case, the entire team at Starkey and Runkle were professional, knowledgeable, and dedicated to achieving the best possible outcome for me. I had called Starkey & runkle because I had recently formed an LLC for my business. I wanted to change the registered agent to Starkey & runkle for a couple different reasons. I emailed them, and they promptly returned my email and called me. My problem comes in at when I told them why I was contacting them, they said that they would be able to help me with changing the registered agent to them. If I also had them right up a record book and a few other things, that I did not need done. For 700 dollars!! When I explained to them that I just was looking to change the registered agent, they said they could not help me if that was all I was willing to do at that time. I don't usually leave reviews, but this really got under my skin. The simple fact that I was more than willing to pay them to use them as the registered agent. Clearly that wasn't enough money for them! I am writing this review as a WARNING to anyone thinking of using this law office. That clearly isn't interested in helping a small time company, that dosen't have thousands of dollars to spend on there services!

My results in court were fantastic. But only because I helped myself out. Not because of the lawyer. I had to explain the details of my case no less than four times; on the initial meeting with Mr. Gruber then after three subsequent court appearances, as if he couldn't be bothered to remember important facts that mattered a great deal to the outcome. He didn't review evidence until very late in the game even though the prosecution was in possession of it from the very beginning and I paid a "discovery fee" before the first court appearance. At one point before our third or fourth time in court he actually said to me, "You're f****d." This is not a joke, he actually said this to me. After I was supposed to have my final appearance the sentencing was delayed because the Judge was out sick. It was only AFTER this that he seemed to remember I suggested character witness letters. Luckily for me I had already asked friends and family to write them and had turned them in to the court. Thankfully the judge seemed to side with me and against the psychotically overzealous prosecution even though I had already pleaded guilty and she let me off as scott free as possible. I have a sneeking suspicion I should have pleaded not guilty and listened to my family and hired another lawyer. Do NOT hire Mr. Gruber for criminal defense.

Mike represents the all best characteristics in an attorney. He is not only extremely knowledgeable and proficient in his field, but a true class act lawyer who cares about, and fights for, his clients. Mike has not only represented me, but helped me straighten out a mess from a previous attorney at a fraction of what he could have charged me. He has shown me that there are still honest, decent attorneys out there who truly care about your best interests. I won't recommend anyone else!. Thanks, Mike!!

Every time I tried to discuss a matter in my upcoming divorce/custody hearing, I was reminded and sent a bill for talking to the secretary. Joyce claimed to have filed for support, kept insisting it was on it's way....8 months later she admitted she forgot. Said she would see that I received retroactive, but agreed to dismiss the back support. She screamed fire me, fire me in courthouse waiting to go back for my hearing. Paid 2,500 + only to have to hire another attorney to do my divorce. Joyce is too worried about if you have cash and bills by the min....even for her secretary.... Good luck speaking with Joyce besides initial retainer....pathetic

Joyce gets the job done and won't stop until you're happy. I am currently in the middle of a very nasty divorce and the only thing that is keeping my spirits up is knowing that I have her as my attorney. She makes herself available for questions and concerns and always responds in a timely manner. When you are at court, she always reassures you and lets you know that everything is going to be OK. I recommend her to anyone that needs a fighter to represent them. Excellent attorney.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
