If you need a lawyer, Ed Furguson is the man to go to. He will go above and beyond the call of duty to help you out in your situation. He was my public defender for my case. Got me the best lowest charge for my mishap. And because I caused no problems during my probation, he even made sure I was able to get an early termination. Ed is AMAZING!!!!

Did absolutely nothing to help me with my DUI. In court just stood there and let the judge give me my sentence. Only did ARD paperwork and collected a check. Would've been nice for him to try to get me not to lose my license as I'm not you're standard diart bag.of course I made a mistake. Ted can pound sand. DO NOT waste your money.

Attorney Zang is not only very knowledgeable in family law but is very empathetic to what you are going through. He is always professional but will be a "guard dog" of your rights. I did not hesitate to call him fifteen years later when I revised my child support order. I wish we lived in state so he could handle our wills and adoption.

If your public defender is David L. Beyer Assistant Public Defender, best of luck. This guy is a joke. I swear his law degree came from a cracker jack box. Attorney Nelson was recommended to me by my best friend. I recently consulted with him regarding my options/rights in a possible divorce case. He listened and was very thorough in explaining the details, preparing me as to what to expect. He also didn't charge an arm and a leg for the information! He was very reasonable in price! I definitely plan to retain him if/when my situation calls for the need of a good attorney! Thank you Mr. Nelson!

Mr. Montgomery has not once contacted his client (my boyfriend). He filed a motion without any communication or even meeting him one time and the motion he filed is sure to do more damage than good. As a public defender, this is unacceptable and he should be removed from his position as lead public defender because he does not set the bar high enough to have lives trusted in his hands or to lead others. An innocent man is trapped and I don't believe for a second that he has done due diligence and we cannot afford a competent lawyer in our area.

When I first met my public defender I was very nervous. I was worried that they wouldn't have my best interest at heart. Mainly because of being African Amercian, and not having the funds for the attorney. MR. Russell Montgomery restored my faith in the legal system and humanity. He was soooo understanding and so kind. He faught for me. I didn't feel neglected, I was kept up on the things I needed to know. My hearing turned out way better than I expected. He received the biggest hug from me at my arraignment. He deserved it. I would recommend him to anyone and I personally would love to have him as my attorney for any legal matter.

I contacted multiple attorneys in the area to try to get some guidance on my situation. I didn't need actual representation or for them to do any actual work, just answer 2 questions. Non of them would answer any question I had without me paying a consultation fee. I get that they have to make money but I didn't really want to pay $100+ just to literally ask 2 questions and have a 5 minute conversation. I called Mark and asked what his consultation fee was and I explained that I didn't actually need any work done, just guidance. He said "tell me what's going on I can tell you your rights." I am so grateful that he took the few minutes I needed to help me without expecting anything in return. So good to see there are still people out there that are not completely driven by money and just want to help.

Paid him $2500 and never did a thing for our son. Will not return our phone calls, His secretary doesn't work there anymore and every time we go to his office the doors locked. In the meantime our son has say in jail almost 1 year and now has to get a public defender. No wonder attorneys have such bad reputations.

Hiring Robert Donaldson was the worst mistake I have ever make in my life. I hired him to represent my boyfriend who was arrested for a DUI. He was on state parole so he was immediately taken back to SCI. That took him 6 months to get completed because Donaldson failed to file transport orders and failed to communicate with us through the entire process. My boyfriend was given other bullshit charges from 4 months before he was initially arrested. It has been over a year since he was charged and Donaldson has continued about 8 times again with little to no communication. Again failing to submit transport orders twice. The last straw was Donaldson failing to communicate that my boyfriend was continued for the second week in a row. I finally fired him and found another attorney that actually care and has been in communication with me more in a week than Donaldson has in 19 months. My boyfriend has only spoke to him out of the courtroom once. He never received his discovery packet and Donaldson couldn't even tell us what evidence the state had against my boyfriend. If you are looking for an attorney please look elsewhere, save yourself from making the biggest mistake of you life. He is a terrible lawyer and should be ashamed of himself.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
