Daniel J. Neyer, Esq. has helped me beyond what I hoped for. He is professional, knowledgeable and understanding. I never felt he didn't give my concerns a priority. I've made adjustments & corrections in my legal documents that i wouldn't never been able to cope with on my own. I can't speak more highly of his abilities & concern for his clients. Believe me, I don't do this type of endorsement, Ever. He has a maturity & ability beyond others I've unfortunately wasted my time & limited funds with in the past.

I’m glad that I’ve chosen Ellis Law Group. Brendan is professional and knowledgeable lawyer who takes his job beyond formal obligations, he is governed by ethical responsibility to help people. Always responsive, despite his busy schedule, providing with valuable and helpful advises, while displaying diligence and care. Also, I want to mention his team of assistants, they all made me feel like I’m in good helping hands.

I am an accomplished Realtor/ Private Investor with over 20 years experience in Real Estate and private investing. I was recently faced with a tough very costly personal subdivision situation. Should I pursue or not? If I we’re working with a client I would have suggested they seek financial and legal advice before purchasing. I followed my own advice. I had to decide if I was going to go through the red tape with the township or move on and look for other opportunities. Attorney Treat guided me in a favorable direction. He saved me money and gave me his professional opinion. I’d use his services again. Thank you! Brenda Isakson

I paid him $2700 to file a Chapter7. He did not file the schedules. He told me everything was being taken care of. It was not. The case was dismissed a week ago because he never filed the required schedules. He won,t return calls. Won,t explain why he did nothing but took my money.

If you like being lied to, taken advantage of and disrespected then these are your guys. should NOT be an attorney. Completely misled me to waive preliminary, and totally destroyed my defense. WASTE of money. Better off watching YouTube and representing yourself.

John Martin took my retainer fee, showed up to my first custody hearing with no paper work completed (that’s the attorneys job) and made me look like a fool. He then returned out of $5k only $300.00 for doing absolutely nothing. He filed no paper work and did nothing for my custody hearing. Guy just wants a paycheck. You could represent yourself better!

Horriblle Lawyer, I paid her at $1500 retainer fee. We talked for five minutes. I was never charged and she robbed me of my money so now I’m taking it to civil court. Also, before you try to purchase this lawyer, since I didn’t know, I think it’s fair that you know that that she used to work for the D.A…. She’s trying to tell me that she spent hours on the phone with troopers which is 100% a lie. My car was impounded and I’m the one who hunted the troopers down every day to make sure that I got my car back. I promise you if you were looking for a lawyer, choose anyone but this one

Spoke with her on Thursday last week. She had me send all information about the case. Scheduled an intake for today. I emailed this morning confirming the intake and I received a voicemail saying they weren’t taking new clients??? If that was the case why tell me last week we would have a conference call today? Makes no sense. Avoid wasting your time.

I have had the pleasure of working with Ms. Gruber for years. She helped us settle my mothers estate, and helped my elderly father for years keep his affairs in order. She is always responsive and kind and very very knowledgeable.

My mother used Howell, Howell & krause for years. After my mother passed I called their firm to inquire about how I get my mothers home put in my name. They briefly explained about the probate process. I was told to send $500 to get started. They would put an ad in the newspaper to see if she has any outstanding debts and they would gather the numbers, evaluate my mothers worth and then we will go from there. After gathering all the information about my mothers financial worth they completed the tax return and mailed it to me with a $21,000 bill without ever discussing it with me. I had no idea that the work was completed or their Fee. The never discussed, or presented a fee agreement. No contract either written or oral existed . We. Never had a fee agreement or contract. I refused to pay Attorney Howell. They sued me for breach of contract for the $21,000. I had to hire an attorney, then A.J Howell told us even if we win the scheduled arbitration hearing he will keep appealing to make me waste money on attorney fees. I am also disabled and now live in Florida. He also said he will keep making me fly up to Honesdale PA knowing I am disabled and the trip is a physical burden on me. He ultimately is an unethical, greedy man. He is currently being investigated for not having a written fee agreement by a Pennsylvania Supreme Court Ethics Investigator. When my attorney told him that he said he doesn't care he has been investigated before and this is how he does business. We had to settle with this man for 15k not to waste any more money on attorney and travel fees. I also was not able to keep traveling back and forth indefinitely due to being disabled. The trip is literately torturous for me. Which he knew and used to strong arm me into settling out of court. Avoid his law firm at all costs!!!

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
