Earl Christison at Novation Law far exceeded my expectations. He was always two steps ahead of what needed to be done and was very knowledgable covering all areas. I have done business planning with other attorney's and have not had the experience I did with Mr. Christison. I know attorney's schedules are busy, but Mr. Christison works was accurate and prompt. I would recommend him over any other attorney. Fantastic to work with!!!

I am a transactional attorney who generally believes that reasonable people can always find a path to resolving their differences. At least I believed that until I had to deal with Portland Public Schools regarding my son receiving the services he needed and which PPS is obligated to provide. Faced with an early morning meeting with PPS, we called Wiscarson Law. Our call was returned promptly and Christopher offered to meet with us that evening and join us at our meeting the next day. Christopher listened to our situation and our goals for our son. He explained our rights and the practicalities of dealing with PPS and the individuals involved. He then took charge, contacting PPS's counsel to notify them that he would be attending our meeting in the morning and arranging to meet in advance with the administrator who that had been an absolute impediment to any workable solution. When we arrived Christopher informed us that PPS had agreed to the resolution we desired. This was, to say the least, an enormous relief. Following this, Christopher kept in regular contact with us, and helped ensure that any needed follow up was taken care of effectively and efficiently. As an attorney, I can honestly say that Christopher is a credit to the profession and I would recommend him whole heartedly. My only regret is that we didn't engage him or Diane Wiscarson much sooner. Our experience with PPS would undoubtedly have been much more productive or at least less stressful.

Mr. Hamilton did an excellent job assisting me through the guardianship process. He was timely, honest and, compassionate. If Christopher was unsure about a specific questions, he was not afraid to research the answer and quickly respond. This is the mark of a professional. Guardianship process was smooth, and Christopher answered all my questions to my satisfaction. I highly recommend Christopher, and have to my friends who are approaching this unsettling time with their soon-to-be adult children with a disability.

The staff is superior! They know their business and helped me with my legal issues in a timely and professional manner. I can't say enough about Jean Fisher and the crew at Lakepoint Law Firm. They have my highest recommendation and confidence. They provide a very comfortable environment and made sure I was taken care of. I showed up 20 minuites early and was offered refreshment while I waited for my appointment. Just good, friendly people.

I'm so sorry you have personal injury legal problems, I've been there. And I whole-heartedly recommend you let Walsh and Associates take care of your legal mess. The team at Walsh and Associates secured the maximum awards possible after my head-on collision with an uninsured drunk driver. To be clear, I got damaged and good. I had multiple surgeries, then they moved me to a hospital closer to home. There were doctors for this injury and other doctors for that one, over a dozen therapists and more than a year in rehabs before I was out of a wheelchair and on my own again. I'd never needed so much help and been so ill-equipped to handle it. The injuries, the paperwork, the bills, and the fallout from suddenly NOT working, all complicated the flurry of choices that had to be made. Turning over the entire legal/medical/insurance snowball over to Rich at Walsh and Associates was a big relief, but a leap of faith. The team collected all the data, kept on top of my progress and periodically checked in with me by telephone just to see how I was doing. I can't put a price on that one: I genuinely felt that they cared. When the time came to negotiate the settlements, the team returned the lowball offers and came back with a much better settlement.

This five star isn't meant to say there is not room to improve, as in my observation they have reach further & a 6th Star could be given for efforts they made. Know from the starting point for me I was made comfortable by Mr. Waksh & June,. From the first day i was seated over looking the lake. As I try to give then the informations, needed to start this claim,. It was a long time from start to finish, Yes a new language & the meaning of what happen next, the how to do what's next, with why it happens. Yes somethings i did not know the why's till they explained how this is the way it is. Im so thankful how Jill did lead me to understand the next step to move in the direction we were seeking together, all those that assisted in the office, if the answer was not known, it would be found. With answers to the many questions i ask. Oh of the patients they had as the same question was asked more then once by me. Now i can lol as the kindness was overwhelming to me. All things being put together as first things first, oh sometimes second things came first. somehow it all fit by the end of where each day took me to move in better understaning. Along with my responsibilities in collecting bits of information to have yet another question answered. Oh this auto accident did major body injury, to me and this law firm has the insight with all these problems to find a way for what i see as the best outcome. I'm thankful they gave more in compassion & kindness, that the money to cover medical bill, came second when asking how i am i doing. Yes the answers to complete this claim came, to success in the balance to care for my health. Some how with the negotiations, I was given more then I could have expected. Thank you all and each that gave me a place to believe in your integrity. D. L. M.

My Attorney consulted me when no other would in my own city of Medford. But I see Neal as my HERO. Advice was 100% and plain simple english. Drove 4 hours to meet with me. Guided me how to email. He’s the best!! Won my case!!

Visibly dedicated, professionally educated and his demeanor allowed me to reestablish some faith and trust within the legal system again. Even when I was ready to throw in the towel Mr. Peaton and his assistant continued to fight for me and in the end it paid off. Not only did i make some really good friends but I also received justice and compensation which was amazing.

I met Chris Eggert through a referral from my EAP, while I was still reeling from the shock that divorce had been introduced into my life. He answered his own telephone and asked about my wellbeing first before proceeding onto business. He told me up-front that there would be more expensive lawyers who couldn't guarantee a different outcome, but that he would bring value in addition to his expertise. He said he would be candid in his interpretations of the issues and the anticipated legal response to each argument, even when those were difficult for me to hear. He told me he would organize all of the information I sent him and only spend time/money reviewing documents to the extent that they became pertinent. He kept his word on those components across-the-board. He encouraged me to remain reasonable without giving into irrational demands or making emotional reactions that might have sabotaged my own case. I know I benefited from Chris Eggert’s representation, but more importantly, so did my children in the settlement that we reached with my coparent.

I have been in a parental/custody dispute with my son's Dad. Things started to escalate quite a bit and I called around to several attorneys. I found Chris and instantly felt like I had someone who would be competent, caring and timely. That's exactly what happened. I've had attorneys before, for various reasons. I've experienced poor communication, drawn out cases, and arrogant attitudes. Not Chris. He stayed on top of everything and was all about a quick resolution, whereas the other parties' attorneys just wanted billable hours. I honestly believe that if I had not hired Chris, I would be battling this case for years to come. Instead, we are only a few months in and today, we officially ended this battle with the results being in my favor. If I find myself here again, Chris is the first call I'm making!

I retained Chris to represent my friend in a DUI case after the court-appointed attorney refused to try to negotiate a plea deal. Chris was able to negotiate a much lesser sentence and my friend was able to keep his job while serving his time under work release. During this time, his ex-wife filed an emergency custody order against him and even though my friend couldn't get an attorney on such short notice, Chris stepped in to help out. We're all very appreciative of his efforts.

She couldn’t cut it in private paractice so now she’s a speeding ticket hack at Salem Muni- Court. ‘Just got back from “judge school” ( no kidding - that’s what it’s called) - at Guantanamo? She’s overly aggressive because she is under-educated and under-skilled. If you see her on the bench - don’t give her any breaks. Use up as much of her (and the cops) worthless time: think of it as a community service: the longer you keep her and the “ armed tax assessor” off the streets - the better for all of us.

I should have asked how many cases she had won/lost. I should have asked her strategy. She was overly confident I would win or extremely lazy, I'm not sure which. She called ZERO witnesses on my behalf. It was pure defense, and weak at that. I heard from the opposing party the judge's decision...you got that a text from my ex-husband not a call from my attorney... And 3 months later she has yet to have one conversation with me that was not thru her assistant. My children were taken from me and I did get so much as a "I'm sorry." My life is broken and my own attorney couldn't be bothered to tell me what my options were. Absolutely unprofessional.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
