Worked really hard for my Mom and I. Made a painful situation A LOT easier for us. He did a VERY good job. I highly recommend him. He has a laid back country lawyer personality. But when it comes to fighting for you, he goes from a country gentlemen to a Pit Bull. Barney.

My son was facing serious charges and a La Grande native let me know Wes Williams was regarded as the best lawyer in town. Wes immediately restored our confidence and my son's rights. He had already been characterized as guilty by the police and DA. Wes and his team worked on our case for nearly a year and we're very happy with the outcome. The DA's original charges that would have sent a child to prison for a minimum of 50 years were dismissed and my son pleaded guilty to what amounts to a minor non-traffic offense. I shared my experience with a co-worker Wes Williams had also represented and he remarked "he's worth every penny," and I agree completely. I highly recommend Wes Williams and his team, they can be trusted.

I am surprised to see this kinda rating for this attorney , I actually was looking to hire Ms. Edwards for a new case. I was very impressed with her work she had done during my 2009 divorce/ custody battle. I felt she took my case very seriously and worked very hard to represent me , my case was extremely complex and she was always on top of things without fail. I do not know the details of the disciplinary action that occured but i do know from experience that Laura Edwards is a excellent, hard working , and caring family law attorney and i would recommend her and hire her again despite the disciplinary action take since my case, thats how confident I am in this attorney.

Jared was referred to me and I asked him to review a judgment from Clackamas County. He confirmed the judgment was in error and rectified the problem, cutting 5 years off my probation time. I had asked my original attorney about the 10 year probation and she told me it was correct and there was nothing she could do. Jared and his assistant Stephanie were professional, respectful, and affordable all the way through the process. Much appreciated.

Union county charged me with illegally trying to purchase a firearm. I hired another attorney who worked on the case for almost a year. The best solution he could get for me was a misdemeanor conviction,$250 fine, three years probation. That attorney had to recuse himself for health issues. Mr. Boyd was highly recommended. I consulted with him and he read the statute. He told me the statute was clear i had committed no crime. I hired him to try to get it resolved. Within a month or so he educated the union county court of the error of their ways. I received a letter from the court stating charges had been dropped against me. He literally saved my bacon and prevented me from receiving a wrongful conviction, fine, and three years probation. If you want an excellent attorney in your corner i would highly recommend Jared Boyd.

At the time of my divorce, I had become permanently disabled from a major car accident. While I was unable to defend myself, I hired Mr. Larvik to be my voice. He spent several months researching my case and a considerable amount of money. At the time of the court hearing, he said that he wasn't prepared and encouraged a settlement that gave my husband all of our joint assets so that we could get it over with. I was too shocked and incapacitated to respond. Later, my ex-husband stated that he would have settled for half of what he received. I received no part of the marital estate and continue to incur considerable medical expenses. I would have been better off letting the judge decide.

Mr. Larvik represented me in a family law/divorce case. He was truthful at all times and always kept me informed as to what was going to happen next. He prepares diligently and meticulously and didn't wait until the last minute. My trial was bumped up but no worries due to his timely preparation. My trial proceeded exactly like he assured me it would and I couldn't have been more pleased with the outcome; a fair decision by the Judge.

Had a phone consultation with Wade. He was extremely unpleasant and rude, interrupted me any time I tried to say anything, treated me like I was stupid, and was only concerned about pressing the fact that he would charge me around $5,000 and demanded to know how it would be paid for. I don’t recommend him and won’t be hiring him. Glad the consultation was free!

They did not help in the case at all. They only sent the paperwork to the judge and did not fight the case at all.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
