If you’re searching for an intelligent and honest attorney; look no further. After my mother’s passing, my wife and I wasted a lot of money with two big city attorneys trying to settle my mother’s estate, due to an issue with her Living Trust. After 2 years of frustration, I finally found Dennis Fordham. He solved and corrected the problem within 6 months for a very reasonable price. My wife and I were so pleased with Mr. Fordham’s professionalism, that we are now collecting our financials together, so that he can set up a Living Trust for us (problem free for our children)! - Bob Morrison

I am very pleased with the service provided by Mr. Fordham and his most delightful staff. When I felt the need for professional help in tidying up my affairs he was at the top of my very short list. He has worked hard for many years to secure my trust and I recommend him to anyone who desires to put their affairs in proper order.

I was I was referred to Edward Savin by a friend he successfully represented in a criminal case. My case had to do with resolving a debt collection matter. I found Mr. Savin to be a skillful strategist and very adept at negotiation. The case was settled for a fraction of what I might have had to pay. I appreciated his empathy as well as the tenaciousness with which he approached my case.

In 1997 Mr. Savin guided me through the process and represented me in a divorce/custody case. His representation resulted in receiving full custody of my son ... My son is now 21 and a success.. Thank you Edward for your passion for what's right and your guidance in a very difficult time in my life.

Mary took charge of my problem with closing my business and getting a Bankruptcy Court to declare on the first time we went to Santa Rosa. She was prepared and had everything perfectly done so that we were only in front of the gentleman who makes the decision for about five or ten minutes and it was over! She is terrific and I would recommend her to anyone and everyone.

I hired Thomas Quinn in Aug 2016 to defend me in a civil case brought by the prior owner of my house that claimed I didn't pay for it. Tom was proficient at both filing and gathering relevant documents for the court. He came to my house a few times to interview and prepare my witnesses. The trial went for 3 days before a jury of 8 people in May 2017. Tom has experience selecting juries and is familiar with the people and proceedings of the court. He speaks and dresses well, is very organized, and was well prepared for my trial. The trial ended with all the jury voting in my favor! Then the case went to the Appeals Court in San Francisco in April 2018. We were not required to attend but we went because Tom is extra cautious. The case was recently dismissed from there. Tom tells me there's still more to come. I believe that with his continued help the eventual conclusion will be positive. I highly recommend Mr. Thomas Quinn's legal services!!!

Angela treated my husband and I like family from our first conversation. We had a pretty scary first court date and was lost, I approached her and just started rambling questions and she took her time to put my husband and I at ease. We knew right away that she was going to keep our family together and get us past our troubles so we could move on with our family plans. I’m not sure where we would be without her kindness and attentiveness to us. She is the best! My children and I thank you Angela for everything!

Not your typical lawyer- Thank GOD! Angela is clothed with integrity in everything she does! The community sees this and she is well known for these gifts among all. Angela displays compassion and wisdom. She helped our family tremendously in many ways and we are so thankful for getting us through tough times. She is a forever friend just like one of the previous reviews stated. We will be forever grateful to her for fighting for our family and encouraging us while in the storm of it all. Awful!!! This lady is very nice person. I would NOT recommend her as a lawyer at all. I hired her, she dug up what she called a "companion" case and that case became her focus, me and mine becoming collateral damage. She had me do some of her work, she is very defensive, she runs around like a chicken with her head cut off talking about she has ADD, she gave me no guidance at all. None. I expected her to sit me down and let me know what to expect that's why I hired her. I could have lost all by myself. After she lost my case, in her pursuit of the "companion" case, rendering me unable to ever see my granddaughter. She asked me if I wanted her to continue on the "companion" case. I told her I had no more money. She said 'you do, actually, said she still had the two last checks for MY case. One was a $2750 check and the other was at $275 check. After she lost my case I expected her to return those checks. She did not. She cashed them. She lost my case with devastating consequences and then had the audacity to cash the two last checks totaling $3,025. Money grubber. Not on her game. I do not recommend.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
