"I had the privilege of working with Jehan Crump-Gibson as my lawyer in probate court, and I couldn't be more impressed with her expertise and professionalism. From the moment we began working together, she demonstrated a deep understanding of probate law and guided me through the complex process with utmost care and precision. Jehan's outstanding communication skills were apparent from our initial consultation. She actively listened to my concerns, asked pertinent questions, and made sure I fully understood every step along the way. Her ability to explain legal jargon in a clear and concise manner was truly impressive, considering the complexity of the probate process. What I appreciated most about Jehan was her dedication to my case. She always kept me informed and promptly responded to any inquiries I had. Her attention to detail was remarkable; she left no stone unturned, ensuring that all necessary documents were accurately completed and filed in a timely manner. Moreover, Jehan's professionalism and empathy made a difficult time much easier for me and my family. She approached sensitive matters with compassion and treated all parties involved with respect. Her calm and reassuring demeanor provided reassurance during stressful court proceedings. Thanks to Jehan's legal expertise, I achieved a favorable outcome in probate court. She tirelessly advocated for my rights and worked diligently to protect my interests. Her diligence, knowledge, and dedication to her clients truly set her apart as an exceptional attorney. I highly recommend Jehan Crump-Gibson to anyone seeking legal assistance in probate court. Her professionalism, expertise, and commitment to her clients make her a standout lawyer for all probate matters. Worked with him on both sides of the bargaining table...on opposite sides when he represented Macomb County in mediation during the City of Detroit bankruptcy, and now on the same side that he's working for the City. Guy is a prodigy. He's absolutely relentless. If he's on your side of the table, you're golden. If not, good luck.

I had a ticket from a construction zone with a surprisingly low speed limit. It was residential, so 3 points and 3 years of terrible car insurance rates once my car insurance company got wind of it. I contacted Mr. Schwartz, he indicated he was confident we could get it reduced, and he managed to get it reduced to merely impeding traffic, a fine, no points, no Secretary of State involvement, and just a minor financial burden which is easily forgotten. He delivered on his promise and I'm very happy with the results.

I don't know about this last guy who posted a review but I think Lyle and his staff are the best! They have been handling our bankrutcy case for us and we have never had to wait more than 5 minutes to see anyone there. They are so nice and helpful and answer all our questions (no matter how stupid) The last time we were there they even had cookies! Lyle took so much time with us making sure we had all the information we needed and he had all the information he needed. He is thorough and very detailed, good things for an attorney lol. I trust Lyle and his staff so much I sent my son to them (Who is also very satisfied!)

Attorney Joe Howitt is a very determined and caring man who went an extra mile to see that I didn't, walk away from our case due to all kinds of stress I found myself in. He was patient and honest in handling our case. He had the best interest and well being of my entire family at heart. We had other attorneys but Mr. Howitt's work ethics were impeccable. We are pleased with the outcome of our case. If you need a fighter who will get you top notch results, go for Attorney Joseph Howitt.

Since my accident in 2008, I have had three different attorneys assigned to my case. The only reason I know this is that I have gotten correspondence from three different attorneys, not because any of them have taken the time to speak with me personally. I spoke with an assistant once who called to straighten out some information because she said my file was a mess. I handled all of the disability and claim issues with my own insurance totally on my own. I have been very considerate, and have never bugged them or pressured them to hurry things up. I have done every single thing that was required of me, and provided them with excellent documentation. They sent another attorney to my deposition who didn't even give me a business card, but made off hand statements like my case was "so easy, no wonder the boss took it". When it was discovered that the defendant had low insurance, I was told to go home and check on my policy, even though the paperwork was laid out right there in front of us at the deposition that I have 100,000 coverage for underinsured motorist. I had to point this out to the attorney there. This info never was passed along to "the boss" apparently, because when I called to see what was happening, nobody seemed to remember this. I have lost three days of work for hearings and depositions that were cancelled at the last minute because my attorney was not prepared or had something else come up. He does not return calls, and does not appear to be invested in representing me.

If there were an award for worst attorney ever he'd be a shoe in. Not only did this man share attorney client information from the woman above who claims he stole 10000 dollars from her, he did the same thing to me for 11000. I signed a contract for a fifty thousand dollar settlement with two conditions, I wanted a lump sum and it separate from my attorney fees, he comes back with 31k + 250$ which he then tells me is the total amount, and that the defendant in this case was not forced to honor the contract dollar for dollar, he let it slip that there were two checks, although I only saw one, and had only one document from the clerk that sent the check, and no other settlement documentation that confirmed he received 50k like agreed. Worst ever!

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
