Maureen at Whitney Law Group LLC was a pleasure to work with! She was accessible, informed and really took the time to go over my options and keep me in the loop. I needed advice on an employment situation, in terms of what my legal rights were and she guided me every step of the way. I could not be happier with the firm, the people, the service I received, and the successful outcome. Highly recommend!

When I needed an attorney to handle a contentious employment matter, Mark came highly recommended (“Reach out to Mark. No question. He’s the best”). After working with Mark and his colleague, Maureen, on a complex matter related to a former employer’s NDA, I wholeheartedly agree. Mark is incredibly knowledgeable, strategic, and extremely thorough in every regard. His style is direct yet empathetic, which was displayed when he helped guide me through what was a very trying situation. His colleague Maureen is also great. She was accessible when needed, is super sharp, and thoughtful within every interaction. What was also refreshing to experience, was how both Mark and Maureen always kept things on track, which was appreciated as legal matters can get costly. In the end, the outcome was an extremely positive one and I will forever be thankful to Mark and Maureen for their help and their professionalism. If you ever are in need of a legal team to handle an employment matter, you need to work with Mark and Maureen. No question, they are the best.

After understanding my situation, Mark got into several negotiations with my former employer. He's very conscientious and cares about my benefits. It was a difficult negotiation process because my former employer was not cooperative. Mark gave the other side's lawyer our best reasoning and what normal companies would do for my situation, but my former employer let their ego get in the way, instead of doing the right thing to investigate, they terminate the good person and wanted to pay a small fee to let me go away quietly. Knowing it has been a retaliation I consulted 4 attorneys in New Hampshire, including some well known ones. They were all unwilling to represent me, but Mark stood up after hearing my story and knew I could get better than what was offered. Through his work in the end I gained a substantial amount extra pay.

I strongly recommend Brian Snell. He took the time to respond to my Avvo question, not once but twice. In addition, he took it a step further by receiving my call and gave me free legal advice. He treated me with respect given my circumstances and gave me a solution to a matter that no other attorney or bank could answer. You are an honorable Attorney and I truly appreciate your time, consideration and patience. Thank you again, Attorney Snell. You went above and beyond.

I had an Abuse Protection Order filed against me. I explained to Randy my situation and he gathered all of my information and he told me that everything's going to be okay. The morning of my court hearing he made me feel very comfortable because I was a little nervous. I had never been in a courtroom before. It can be a little intimidating. When the hearing started he was very professional and within 15 to 20 minutes the hearing was over and we won. In my book of life Randy is a winner.

My lawyer and I were struggling with some major issues in my divorce negotiations. I was suddenly in a time crunch with a lot on the line. I made a crucial decision to ask Randy to step in and represent me. He hit the ground running! He's quick with math and can think on his feet. He was able to make some changes in a very short period of time, appeared on my behalf, and in one hour increased my alimony enough to cover my legal fees. He eventually got me to an arbitrator, Anthony Doniger at Sugarman Rogers, and in the end, I walked away with everything I needed to be financially secure. Randy also followed up on the details to make sure all of the documentation on pensions and QDRO were done. It was stress for me....as stress free as a divorce can be after a nightmare of difficulty.

My son was having enormous trouble in school and we were seeking an out of district placement. The school where we wanted him to go recommended her. She was abrupt and quite rude on the phone. She insisted I give her the name of our previous attorney who quit 2 or 3 months prior so I did. She called this person and then called me back to say she would not take our case. Talk about lawyers taking other lawyers' sides. The school who referred her was shocked to find out she refused to help us. I bet she is no longer on their referral list. In hindsight, I'm glad it didn't pan out. It saved us lots of money and heartache. Think twice!

Attorney Heather Gold is phenomenal. We have been working with her for over 10 years. She goes through every document with a fine-toothed comb and gives sage advice. She is thoughtful and meticulous, and understands the challenges faced by parents of children with special needs. Her work ultimately led to residential placement for our child in an excellent facility without ever going to court. She is the best!

Words cannot express how grateful we are to Heather. Hiring her was a game changer in our lives. She is patient, kind and knowledgeable when it comes to dealing with school systems. My son’s school district was resistant and fought hard to keep him in-district when he needed an out of district placement. Her guidance and advocacy on behalf of our son made all the difference in the world. I highly recommend Heather.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
