Mr Sharpe was highly recommended for his knowledge and ethical standards. At my first meeting I was so relieved to find an attorney who was willing to listen and provide the legal assistance which I needed. I am looking forward to wrapping up a long nightmare that my previous attorney just dragged on forever. He is the smartest attorney i have ever met

Financially ruined my family and did not deliver. Did not do what she said she would do. Procrastinated with a million "the dog ate my homework" excuses. Demanded a flat fee retainer of $45,000 up front for a child custody dispute. Paid her because I was vulnerable and emotional and wanted to protect my children. Now I'm deeply in debt. Four months into the case, she had still not served a discovery request on the other party. Never went after my ex-husband for child support. She told me she was going to file a Rule 11 sanction against my ex-husband and his lawyer before I hired her. She also never did this. I finally fired her after four months of inaction on her part. When I fired her, she told me the $45,000 was gone, and I would be getting zero refund. It then took her about a month to produce billing records. What a joke. She charged me $8,575.00 for actual work and $36,300.00 for emails, texts, and phone calls. I am serious. This is the way this woman operates. And many of my communications to her were in response to her directing me to email her information for motions she never drafted. Many of our communications were me asking (begging) her to please do her job and her giving me false assurances and promises in response. When I asked for my file to give to my next lawyer, she said I was harassing her. When I said I disputed her insane billing and wanted to mediate the matter, she said I was harassing her. Before I fired her, she kept telling me we were friends. She told me I would look bad to the judge if I fired her. Hey, North Carolina: This is an attorney in good standing with the North Carolina bar? What a joke. Wish me luck with my complaint to the NC bar and lawsuit. You know how, when you enter a cockroach-infested room and turn on the light, they scurry for cover? They really hate the light of day, don't they.

This attorney charged me a $45,000 flat fee to represent me in a custody/child support case. She never filed anything pursuing child support and didn’t do what she said was going to do. I finally fired her after four months because she hadn’t even filed a discovery request on the other side. After I fired her, she refused to refund even one penny. My family is devastated. I’m a single mother of four. I will be complaining and pursuing a refund. Excessive fee and did not do what she promised. Then when I asked for refund, told me she spent $45,000 in four months of representation. She only represented me at one hearing. I’m taking this to the authorities.

I had the privilege of working with Arlaine Rockey as my attorney, and I cannot praise her enough for her outstanding support and dedication. Arlaine played a pivotal role in securing a restraining order against my abusive ex-husband and ensuring my children's safety. What truly sets Arlaine apart is her unwavering commitment to her clients, combined with her exceptional expertise in child sexual abuse cases. Given the harrowing history of sexual abuse perpetrated on my minor children, her specialized knowledge and experience in this area were absolutely crucial. With her expertise, Arlaine successfully fought for full sole custody of my son and daughter, a feat that seemed impossible at one point. She understood the gravity of the situation, especially with the history of both physical and sexual abuse, and she acted swiftly to protect my children from any harm. Unlike my previous attorney, who was ineffective in safeguarding my family's well-being, Arlaine Rockey demonstrated exceptional legal skills and genuine compassion, particularly in handling the delicate and distressing issues related to child sexual abuse. She made sure my children were no longer subjected to "therapeutic" visits with their bio father, who had caused them immeasurable pain and trauma. Thanks to Arlaine Rockey's dedication and her unparalleled expertise in child sexual abuse cases, my family and I can finally breathe easier, knowing that we are safe and protected. I wholeheartedly recommend Arlaine Rockey to anyone seeking a compassionate and skilled attorney who will go above and beyond to fight for justice and the safety of their loved ones, especially in cases involving a history of sexual abuse to minor children.

A member of our family passed away in a nursing home. We live in another state and were notified only when we called to inquire about his current condition. He had no other local family. We were told that Mr. Huff was handling everything. I have called and left messages for Mr. Huff three times over the last few months explaining our relationship to the deceased and asking for simply the date, manner of death and what became of his remains. He has never returned my calls despite a plea with his secretary to at least call back with any information he can give us. Shame on him.

Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
