My family and I were involved in a bad car accident. The car was totaled and we were pretty banged up. After a lot of doctors visits and therapy, we were relieved that Mr. Aaron & Donna had helped us be compensated for the bills and the loss of wages.

My son and I were involved in a multi car accident in August of 2019 with the other driver being at fault. Medical bills quickly climbed and the hassle of dealing with insurance companies and others became exhausting. I had several of my patients, friends and family recommend Mr. Aaron. I called and scheduled our appointment which was very quick and timely. They took our case and Mr. Aaron and his whole staff were kind and understanding and very professional, they walked me through every step and took the stress off of me and exceeded my expectations and got a very nice settlement and compensation for not only myself but for my son. I highly recommend Mr. Aaron and his staff!!!! We were very blessed to have worked with him.

Around quarter one of 2024, my ex-wife got into a legal dispute with her Mom. Yes, this is dysfunctional family and that’s because they all struggle with bi-polar. Courtney was called upon and the case was explained to her. She was awarded a $5k retention fee from me to represent my ex-wife in family / juvenile court. At that time, Courtney explained that she charges a flat rate and the case could go on for a long while and go through 3-4 hearings before being resolved. She said that another fee could be imposed if it went beyond that. The first hearing arrives and the case was dismissed by the prosecution. My ex-stepmother asked the judge to drop the charges and the court accepted then fined her $150. Case completed. So… prior to the hearing, Courtney was asked if the case could be dismissed in this way and she said no but the judge saw otherwise. This is important to know because Courtney clearly did not contribute to the dismissal. Afterwards, Courtney was confronted and asked if any of the retainer was refundable since there was a fraction of the expected hours and labor put into the case. SHE SAID NO. There’s the factual story folks. You decide… you want this firm representing you? Courtney met with the family involved and is very aware that they are poverty stricken with mental illness. Still makes me angry to think about it.

I went to MR Barrow to have a contact made to buy an Estate, He told me that he could take care of it for $2700.00 so I paid him 2000 and he did make a contact for me but he was unable to complete the transaction I hired him to do! I could probably understand paying him 1000 to make the contact but he charged me a 1000 after the contact was made and signed, I just don't think what he did was worth 2000 dollars and I tried calling him and left messages but he never answered me back till he decided he wanted me to pay more money for nothing!! I don't think I would ever use him for anything else, I am disabled but I once was a carpenter but I never got paid for a job and didn't do what I was hired to do! I just wanted to warn people that he is not worth the money or time!!

Best attorney I’ve met. Compassionate, moral, down to earth and knowledgeable, all around nice guy. I highly recommend, he did my estate planning and it was done to my request. The piece of mind that everything is taken care of exactly the way I want it to be is priceless ❤️

My family and I have had to deal with John P. Hance regarding our mother's estate and real estate closing since January 2011. Unfortunately, he has made a difficult situation for us a horrible experience. He has been unprofessional, unresponsive, and condescending the entire time! I would not recommend him to anyone needing a real estate closing attorney/settlement agent!

This was the worst experience ever. I retained this lawyer in hopes of helping my loved one in Dec. I spoke to this man once and he wanted my payment and assured he could help. I made that payment and never spoke to him again! His receptionist Angie was super unprofessional and never passed any message to the lawyer at my request. I was passed off to an associate who lied and then got upset that I brought the lies to their attention. Once i voiced the complaint, communication was none!! I never heard from them again. They never called to say outcome of the case! They made false promises and didn't help me at all!! They took my money then told me the lawyer was on vacation!!! Which he should have told me to begin with!! Beware of this place!!! $750 wasted and I never got any return calls or messages or the outcome!! I guess because I live in NC they think they can tell you anything!! Please avoid the office at all costs! Do your research!

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
