Rachel Hodgman is a dedicated, intelligent, and professional attorney who guided me through the divorce process. I would recommend her services to anyone going through the difficult and emotional experience of divorce and in my case, shared child custody. Rachel was personally invested into mine and my children’s well being. She was always available when and if I needed to talk. She looked out for me, but not in an overbearing way, when I became disillusioned with anything to do with the divorce. She represented my interests perfectly when it came down to negotiating an agreement with my ex wife and her attorney. I have a good outlook on life post divorce and Rachel greatly assisted me in achieving this.

Rachel has represented both my wife and I (in different cases.). She is truly amazing. She is very understanding and will put in the work to represent her client to the best of her ability! Hopefully neither one of us need to go back to court, however if we do we would not hesitate to call Rachel!!

Attorney McNichols has demonstrated her impressive knowledge and effective demeanor to us through many projects over the past ten or more years. She has taken the time to get to know our business and family situations so that she can be as thorough, accurate and economical as possible. Our projects have included multiple residential and commercial real estate (including condominium organization) and business transactions, LLC set-up and filings, preparation of wills. She recently helped us successfully close a complex business sale that was drawn out over a protracted period due to buyers' issues. She stuck with us and advised us soundly every step of the way. Thanks to Attorney McNichols we have secured our retirement through this transaction! We are extremely grateful for her availability, responsiveness and prompt and thorough communication. Excellent communication is so important in any successful relationship but especially in the attorney-client relationship. Attorney McNichols is always quick to respond to the smallest of questions in a prompt and courteous manner. She is informative without being the least bit condescending. On the rare occasion that she has not had an immediate answer for us she has been able to consult with her team members to promptly meet our needs. Attorney McNichols is great on her own and even stronger as a member of like-minded, professional and dedicated team of advisors at her firm. She also maintains a strong paralegal staff to back her up. Her fees have always been fair and reasonable. We look forward to working with Attorney McNichols and her colleagues for many years to come!

Liz is smart, dependable and focused. She has a strong background in real estate, condominium and timeshare law, also conveyancing, financing and commercial transactions. Her documents are enforceable and protect the client - while still being readable! She is also a good listener and a quick study, it never takes her long to grasp (and often improve-upon) a transaction.

I recently sold my home in Falmouth, Mass. on my own and I called Mr. Garner. He walked me through the process clearly, telling me what issues I would need to address. From the start, he and his paralegal, Denise, made the process go smoothly. I emailed Denise numerous times and she is a real problem-solver. This law office is professional and experienced, and I recommend them to others who have real estate legal needs.

I first met Brian when he represented another party in a real estate transaction. We went on to use Brian and his firm to represent our company in its mortgage lending activities. During the course of the last 10 years, he has handled all real estate documentation and been involved in many property negotiations representing our company. As a company active in mortgage lending and discounted mortgage acquisitions, Brian has dealt with our challenges including bankruptcies and foreclosures. We are happy to have Brian on our side of the table.

Ms. Johansen reviewed and substantially overhauled—and improved—existing legal agreement templates for my business. In the process, I found her to be patient, clear, highly intelligent, thorough, consummately professional, and a delight to work with. Her excellent work afforded me greater protection and peace of mind. I happily and heartily recommend her services.

I spoke with tyrell on phone and he was amazing. He took the time to hear about my case and provided me with the best information and advice. A lot of law firms tend to pick up and just book you a consultation without answering any questions. But he did the exact opposite. I highly recommend this firm if you are looking for an honest and professional group of people to work with.

Nicole was recommended to me for my divorce. She was my savior and literally at beckoning call all day everyday for a solid year. I went through a horrible divorce that included a business, which she was very knowledgeable about. She fought hard for me and knew what the judge would or wouldn't agree with. I honestly couldn't have gone through what I went through without her. She also knew the opposing Attorney and how he operated which was a huge benefit. I plan to use her for all future legal matters. She is ethical smart and caring and helped me tremendously during the most difficult time in my life.

I hired this attorney to assist with my modification and she stated she was able to help and I had grounds for modifying my parenting schedule with the other parent. When the other party hired an attorney, her demeanor began to change and so did her confidence in winning. To make matters worse only weeks before trial, she withdrew herself indicating she felt I no longer had grounds. The other attorney intimidated her and I was forced to fight for my child on my own.. I should have read the previous review! Get an attorney who is not afraid to take on the big dogs and invests in you.. After all, isn’t that what you’re paying thousands for?

Please stay away from this attorney by all means! When we first met, she said I should be applying for guardianship for my adult disabled son and would help me with this but subsequently never did anything and later reversed her position saying the court would most likely not agree with my being my son's legal guardian. She also told me that my ex would not be allowed to move my son out of state without a good plan for my son to include workshop/day program. Again she changed her position on this, later stating a court would agree with my ex moving my son out of state even if there was no reason to believe it would be in his best interest to move. She is very poorly versed in legal matters regarding special needs adults. She rarely answered my calls and became very disengaged from my case. Frankly what originally appeared to be good representation was the exact opposite and a total waste of time and money.

Susan Sard White was appointed as a child advocate for my children as I was going through a divorce. Took very little time and showed 0 interest. Made no bones about the fact that she was paid very little by the courts to do this type of work and was not sure how much time she could actually devote to it. Time went by and as her report was coming due, it was like a house was on fire! Went months without a word and then she was calling constantly asking questions and looking for info. If she gets assigned as your child’s advocate go back to court and ask for someone else. She was extremely unorganized and extremely unprofessional. You and your children deserve better!

Susan represented my interests in a mediated divorce settlement. She was a fine advocate, extremely efficient and well-organized, and a pleasure to work with. She would make a fine mediator herself.

I hired this lawyer to offer legal advice on a small claims related matter for our business. He failed to do proper diligence on the party bringing the claim against us, attempted to charge us for his own mistakes that delayed our response to the courts, and was quite unprofessional throughout. Avoid this attorney.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.

Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
