Attorney Petrick has been by my side every step of my journey through the quagmire that attempts to pass for a legal system in Fayette county. And despite numerous setbacks and flat out incompetence on the part of several local officials he’s always been able to fix the clerical mistakes and a get a handle on the case even when I had no idea what was going on. He is still representing me in my current case matters and I will continue to retain his services as council for the foreseeable future even after this hurdle is cleared. If you find yourself looking for legal representation I feel that I can recommend Brendan’s law firm with no hesitation. While our matter is ongoing he is continuing to match every action with a reaction. I am happy with the service legally speaking and the attention he pays to me as a client.

This is probably one of the most significant decisions of my life, ie. to prepare my final arrangements. As bizarre as it may sound, approximately fifteen years-ago, my husband and I did make what we thought were all the necessary arrangements, a Will, POA and a Trust. I was mistaken, my documents were legal, but they did not represent my wants and needs. Opinions of others may be well intended, but at the end of the day, none of it matters if it costs more money than you have and believe me none of us can afford end of life medical care. I was fortunate enough to find out before it was too late. Certainly, we may all fit into a generic category, but each case is unique; I realized I needed a lawyer that specializes in elder care. I called Zacharia/Brown and again had the good fortune of having Attorney, Colleen Bratkovich secure a complete package of medical care for my husband, POA, Beneficiary, Will and Trust, all recorded. What may be simple for others, was an arduous task for me. I procrastinated in providing Colleen with the necessity information. Colleen was extremely patient and kind, but she needed the information. Mary Jo McBride, Case Manager was the solution, she helped me compile all the required information “she organized a mess of bank statements, records and determined their relevance. Last, but not least...there is Coleen McGee, Legal Secretary, she orchestrates the seamless workings of “The Office”, one special lady. All is well and I am completely satisfied. Colleen Bratkovich has completed everything as promised, without her knowledge and expertise …it’s a gamble and the odds are against YOU! Before closing, I must comment on their SERVICE FEE: The same thing I tell my dentist, “I will never complain about the money... because it’s an investment in myself” and “Colleen Bratkovich is worth every dollar! “ Sincerely, Karen Kovach There are legal ways to qualify for appropriate medical care and avoid squandering your lifetime savings.

There was nothing good I could take away from this 40 minute $300 consultation, when they called me and made an error in scheduling and rescheduled me 2 weeks out. My consultation was with James and had mentioned why I didn't complete the questionnaire, those individualized sections with assets didn't apply to my Dad, twice he made it clear and it was not advisable for me to attempt to spend down the assets, but he did quote me a fee of $15,000 and that is based on the average cost of monthly nursing home care and because of its complexity it would take 248 days to spend down, I'm not disputing that's its a long process, I came for some insight and hopefully finding the right attorney for my Dad.

When I needed an attorney, Ryan H. James came "highly recommended". I contacted Ryan and he set up a preliminary meeting to discuss my issues. Having him undertake my case instantly became a blessing. He was compassionate, thorough, easy to talk to, but yet maintained the highest level of professionalism.

Ryan made the process of preparing for and showing up for my court date simple and easy. He guided me through the whole process and was able to advise on what would be expected from me. I was able to rely on him to speak on my behalf and being able to trust him made a stressful situation in my life a little less stressful.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
