Matt and his team are amazing to work with. They are both very friendly and welcoming. Matt made the whole process of establishing out Trust very easy to understand and also answered all of our questions when we needed clarification. Matt made making our trust much easier that I thought it would be. We filled out a form with what we want to protect, and he knew what questions to ask to make sure it was prepared to what we wanted. He is very knowledgeable and gave us input about things we had not thought of. We would recommend Matt for any will or trust preparation.

I am so pleased that I found Matthew to help me when I was in a cat accident. He worked hard to be sure I received what I deserved! Matthew is very thorough and knowledgeable! Through the whole process he kept me updated and explained what was going on in terms the average person would understand. Hands down he's the best lawyer I've had!

In late September 2023 I was unfortunately in a head on car accident on the way home from work when an individual turned into my lane. I was left with a broken collar bone, which put me out of work immediately due to my occupation. Having no idea what to do, I decided to reach out to Matt's office due to Matt specifically practicing personal injury 100%. I would have never been made whole if I didn't reach out that day. All the medical bills and wage loss built up quickly in the two months I was out of work. My first phone call, I got the pleasure to speak with Abbie, Matts paralegal, and WOW was I impressed right away. After explaining why I was calling, Abbie cared about asking how I was doing and talked to me instead of just diving into the next steps right away. Then I got the pleasure to talk to Matt, same thing, just talked for a bit before diving into business. They are both in my eyes not just considered attorneys but outstanding individuals. Then Matt explained to me everything that would happen. Everything he explained that would happen was so easy to understand and stress free. And he did not miss a beat, everything happened as he explained. Which is a perfect example why his work ethic and professionalism in his occupation blew me away. Not to mention, all my stress went away immediately, Matt took that all away. He kept in touch on a regular basis. I didn't have to do much other thing give him information as needed. And most importantly to me personally, Matt helped me understand by reaching out for help is the right thing to do, not to feel guilty, but understand it's about being human. That showed me who is his as a person, not just as an attorney. Again, no way I would've been made whole if it wasn't for Matt and Abbie's thoughtful, conscientious, and hard work. There are so many variables in these situations but if you're willing to listen, learn, trust, and talk with Matt he will not let you down. He is the man to call for your personal injury. Thank you again DeVos Law!

In December of 2020 I was in a vehicle accident and suffered bodily injuries, emotional and mental stress. I knew I needed representation to know what to do and to be treated fairly. I had made countless phone calls to several lawyers seeking representation of my case. None was interested. Luckily, I found Lawyer Matt Devos Law Firm. I can not thank him and staff enough for taking my case. They were courteous, professional and answered all my questions. At first before I found Lawyer Devos, I was getting the run around. Thanks again Matt. I was back and forth to many doctors dealing with the pain, agony, bodily injuries and mental stress. Finding out I had pre existing conditions and my age being over 60 which was used against me by the other side. As much as the opposing side fought against me and tried to use whatever they could not to pay, Matt took all the odds against my case and used them favorably for my case as a success. Also, the vehicle that struck my vehicle was not a personal vehicle, it was a commercial vehicle. Thanks to Matt he has experience working these kinds of cases. This type of vehicle accident requires meeting time sensitive deadlines, which we met all of them on time and got all documents signed on time. He possess good communication skills, which is desperately needed in a lawyer. He kept me up to date. He kept on tasks speaking with the courts, judges, and the opposing side. He stayed on top of things. Matt is knowledgeable, professional and experienced in his work as a lawyer. I highly recommend him. He showed me patience toward the whole recovery process which took over 2 years. I really appreciate that he was so sympathetic. He was on my side and showed confidence when all kinds of odds were to me, looking against my case. We won, got a nice and sizeable settlement and I put it in a CD toward my retirement. I am so happy and pleased about that. I am grateful for the outcome of my case.

Paul has been representing the YWCA Madison in employment and contract issues since about 1997. I came on board in 1998 as the CEO and immediately got to know Paul and I have worked with him ever since. He has been exemplary in his work for our association. He is through, he renders excellent advise and is extremely knowlegeable in employment law including UC and EEOC. He has represented us in a number of cases and with his help we have had exceptional success. He is someone that I can turn to for advise and I wisely do. He takes the time necessary to prepare for each case, he asks very good questions. He always files our documents in a timely manner and he always keeps us informed of where we are in the process.

🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨 I was referred to fox & fox by another law firm whom has extensive knowledge of my current ongoing employment litigation. The questions asked during the brief "consultation" were meant to gage how much I could pay to keep the case going. As soon as the attorney became aware that I am disabled and unable to pay extravagant hourly fees out of pocket, he began to give excuses as to why he couldn't take my case without first asking about the merits of the case. Examples; (1) He has too many cases currently. (2) It would cost alot of money to review the case where it currently stands, and I don't have it to pay. (these were his words!) (3) He works for a firm, therefor he can't make decisions independently. (4) He doesn't have all the necessary information to make an offer, but is too busy to follow up to obtain the necessary information.. I think you who are reading this get the point.. Without money to pay hundreds of dollars an hour in fees, we have no civil rights or equal access! This message is for the hourly employees, the disabled, the disadvantaged and underprivileged looking to uphold your civil rights. Majority of these law firms advertise that they are for the people, but in reality they serve the corporate giants that can afford to pay upfront to drag these matters out, effectively exhausting the hourly workers resources and therefor making it nearly impossible to find an ethical attorney who will seek to learn first about the merits rather than your economic status. Note to the owner of this review page; Please do not respond to this review with a generic disclaimer or reason this is happening.. The case results were above and beyond what we expected as Richard and Mike Fox fought our case while keeping my wife and my interests and her physical condition in mind.... Choosing Fox & Fox, S.C. Firm and specifically Richard Rice for my case was the best decision I could have made. My career, my future and the security of a family were all turned upside down by the actions of a trusted employer. I was blindsided, unfamiliar with my rights and worried about the corporate intimation I knew would follow should I take a stand. Richard helped me with in every aspect of my case. Mr. Rice is an excellent skillful caring lawyer, from the very start, he was upfront and realistic regarding the situation and expectations. Richard truly went above and beyond in handling my claim. He diligently explained every situation in detail to me and answered all of my questions. I strongly recommend that anyone who would find themselves in an Employee Rights legal situation to contact Richard Rice for a consultation. Thank you again, I shall forever be in your debt.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
