Jeremy and his staff were extremely helpful in resolving my auto accident case. They never gave in and kept pushing to get me the best possible resolution, all while keeping me informed about my case. I really felt like they cared about me and in the end settled my case for a much higher amount than was expected. I feel like Jeremy went above and beyond to represent me in a very professional and courteous manner. I am so glad he was recommended to me!!

From the beginning Deborah was concise and at the same time interpreted the law to me. I was six years into a divorce with another lawyer who used me for a cash register, finally using his only out, “your difficult”. Deborah saw right through the problems with my prior attorney and proceeded to compile the details of my case like the real and true lawyer she is! Deborah sifted through my case looking specifically for an end result that would clearly examine the facts and present them to the court. I lost my kids, my house, my car, hundreds of thousands of dollars, personal and family antiquities, because of the first Lawyer, the wrong Lawyer!! And then there was Deborah Zitomer!! With clear experience and a gift of personal connection, exactly what I needed for a Family Law Attorney after going through the “ripper offer”. Deborah led the way and cleared all the road blocks my ex’s attorney throughout to delay the process.  She was instrumental in finalizing all of the details, for example the proceeds from the sale of my home, the transfer of marital retirement funds along with clear explanations, the other sides lawyer was baffled and stunned by Deborah's expertise. Please understand me clearly, I am a true survivor of divorce for one reason only and her name is Deborah Zitomer

I thought I was in a cookie cutter custody case until my ex pulled out all the stops and I found myself with effectively no custody. For the past three traumatic years, Ms. Zitomer has been a tireless advocate on my behalf, not once giving up on me. Her memory is iron clad, which is extremely helpful now that I have three years' worth of events accumulated. I didn't think I needed someone of Ms. Zitomer's caliber, but it turns out that I very much did need her!

By great fortune, I ended up in Amy's office to help me work through the divorce process. She first and foremost, was able to put my mind at ease during a very stressful experience. Amy is extremely bright, diligent, tenacious - never letting small details get passed over and empowering. She was patient, explained the process as we went along and was always very responsive. Her guidance, advice and expertise are second to none.

Amy is knowledgeable, savvy, level headed resoected by colleagues and sharp. I was in a full on divorce, Amy kept me on track when emotions wanted to run wild, she's smart & focused. Even though I wasnt here only client, I felt like I was because she's attentive & organized. She also saved me money at any opportunity that arose. I met Amy almost 15 years ago and to this day, the "ex" straightens up at the mention of her name. I still refer people to her. They also find her to have all these qualities. Her record with me is stellar.

I needed an attorney for a divorce proceeding and several years later, a child custody issue. Ms. Newman was very generous with her time in explaining to me the various steps that needed to be taken and in keeping me informed as to the progress of my legal issues. She was easily accessable by phone for a quick question, or if she was out of the office, she always returned calls promptly. Although my divorce took longer than I would have liked due to my ex-husband's refusal to cooperate in any way, Ms. Newman kept things moving forward. When issues cropped up after the divorce was finalized, she continued to be accessable and supportive as needed. Some years later, an emergency child custody issue arose. I again contacted Amy, and she immediately got the issue resolved in court. She is very well versed in all areas of family law, including adoptions. I have referred both family and friends to her as needed and will continue to do so.

When I found Beverly six months ago, I knew right away that I would hire her as my immigration attorney. She has truly been a blessing in disguise. She is handling my work visa and permanent residency. Beverly is an expert and is incredibly current on the ever-changing ever-confusing matters of immigration. Not only is she an outstanding professional, but she builds a comfortable rapport with clients that lets you know that your case is a top priority and you know that she truly does care about you and your situation. I found the staff there super friendly and knowledgeable too. She is there guiding you step by step through every frustrating detail that may arise with immigration. I have 100% confidence in Beverly as my attorney and have recommended her to several people who have been equally impressed with her.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
