I highly recommend Mr. Hanagan. He has represented me in several matters involving the death of a family member, and serious personal injury. He knew what he was talking about and offered serious, practical and good advice during the pending cases. He was always available to respond to questions, and concerns. Both matters were resolved without filing a lawsuit in part I think because of his preparation and presentation of the case.

Nobody every plans on seeking a divorce or wishing it on anyone; especially when you have kids involved. I couldn't even say the "D" word when I first met Rebecca as I still was partially in denial and couldn't stop crying. Her strength, experience, and compassion encouraged me to retain her. But her advocacy, leadership, and grit to fight for me as if it were for her own family are what led me to the peace and tranquility that I have today. Thank you, Rebecca. We have a safe and happy life now; one free from dysfunction and turmoil. You were truly worth every penny.

I am an attorney who has worked the other side of many cases with Rebecca. She is extremely thorough and knowledgeable. I see that she takes excellent care of her clients and personally cares about her cases. She is a challenge to work against as she knows the law and knows how to get the desired results for her clients. I am no longer in private practice and I refer my former clients to her because I know that she will take care of them. She is responsive and takes the time to inform her clients honestly of all aspects of their cases.

At some point in your life you may find yourself in need of legal assistance such as I have. Whether you seek reference from friends, family, or the internet, deciding on an attorney to suit your legal needs can be overwhelming. Troy Parrish and his team of associates tremendously reduced the amount of stress, anxiety, and uncertainty my legal issues brought about. Troy's attention to detail, the manner in which he explained every step of the legal process I found myself in and its potential outcomes, gave me a strong sense of relief knowing I had chosen the right attorney for my needs. I am often asked which attorney I would recommend on a variety of issues and my response is always the same. "Call T.J. Parrish!"

Jerry is a very professional, ethical, and knowledgeable attorney. In my situation, he suggested that I not go forward with a lawsuit, not because I had a poor case, but because it would not be in my best interest in terms of how it would impact my life (reputation, current employment, etc.). He is a credit to his profession. He also struck me as being very knowledgeable in employment law and defamation/slander. I would highly recommend him to anyone. Jerry also has served as Chairman for his local grade school board and is highly respected in the Mt. Vernon community.

Cherly Powell is a top pick. She has went above and beyond for me. I had a very bad experience when I first hired another lawyer for my child custody case. The first lawyer promised me alot and delivered very little, it was a $3500 lesson I learned and I was forced to seek other legal advice. I was told about Cheryl through another friend and I scheduled a consultation. Cheryl told me up front the truth about what she felt about the case. It was very honest and it was the truth. She told me that it would take time and with all the factors in the case that I may not get what I want. I could tell that Cherly knew her stuff and was not going to steer me wrong. I hired her and she got right to work. Cherly work consistently for 1 1/2 years on my case. She is very responsive to my emails and she never left no stone unturned. I couldent have asked for a better lawyer. She was aggressive need be and kind when need be. She is a true professional. Even when we had a rough trial day she kicked it up another gear and pulled out everything she possibly could to help me gain custody of my daughter. I am forever grateful for her. She is worth every single penny spent and then some.

She by far is not capable of practicing law. The level of professionalism is horrendous! When it was on my time to meet with her she would often complain about other clients right in front of me. Her and her secretary Cheryl! Then in the middle of my case she told me she was goin on vacation for a couple months. Only to find out she had gotten in trouble for running her mouth about a case to another client!!!!!! Imagine that!!! Yes she stated that to me! She is not capable of wording a legal document or doing even the slightest of investigating work to find out the amount in an account i should have been in titled to during the divorce process. Instead the hearing for the divorce took place shortly after her “vacation” was over. Only after the court date did i find out she FAILED to word the document correctly causing my children to loose out on over $5,000.00 worth of money that could have went for their education funds. I had to do most of the work on getting the proper documents needed to establish child support. I found out in COURT that she was the one who was holding the papers and blaming it on the lawyer of the other party, stating he was not responding. I’m talking like months to respond, when in reality it was her holding the document all along. She also has nothing to do with you after the initial court date. Once the reason you hired her is over look elsewhere. You need advise on anything look for another lawyer cuz the will charge another retainer fee of $1850 just to answer one question. By far the worst, inconsiderate, unprofessional, lazy, lying sack of crap lawyer. Save yourself the time and look elsewhere. The states attorney for free is 1000000000% better than Cheryl!

Refused to see the 50 issues I brought up. Ignored that I was being blamed for issues like his neglect. Accused of lying. Only wanted to satisfy the father. Wanted to get him to act like he was a perfect father so he could get what he wanted from me. She didn't see what was in the best interest of the children. She wanted to reward him bc he did one thing right when he showed up for visits under the influence. Wanted me to give him the responsibility of children when he has a history of abusing alcohol for over 2 years. I wouldn't recommend her for mediation to anyone ever.

Was given false hope in getting custody of my 2 kids. She told me I had a very good chance of getting custody and more time with my kids. When it came time for court she did not even fight for me. Everything she told me I got (kids spending night on holidays, getting the amount of time back that had been practiced for 2 years) I found out later was not true. She had the judge sign the order that I was not allowed to see that had mistakes in it. Child support was based off $7000.00 more per year than I actually make. I would have been better off on my own.

ABSOLUTELY amazing. Managed to get full custody for me and every holiday, claim on taxes every year, and managed to get child support out of him and he doesn't work, hes only a fulltime student. This states attorneys office is the most unprofessional place I’ve had to deal with. I simply called to ask the date/time of a case I was a victim to, and asked how I could attend and the lady told me “I have no information at this time.” And hung up on me. I have went through tons of phone calls to see how I can get a case dropped, being the victim. I’m always directed to Lauretta who’s the “victim advocate.” I called two days in a row leaving a voice message with a call back number after being told she was in court. On the third day I got told she went on vacation until the day prior to when my boyfriends court was scheduled. I was told she would call me before court “most definitely.” I never received a call. I called to speak to Lauretta the day of court due to it being continued. I explained my timeline on calls and my disappointment with the care I’ve received. In the middle of our conversation I politely asked her to hold on a second as my sons doctor was calling. She responded to me with “my time is more important than to wait on a phone call” and hung up. When I called back the receptionist put me on hold instead of sending me back to lauretta. I called back several times to speak to Lauretta to be put purposely on hold or to be hung up on. I then went to the courthouse to speak to her and she told the guards “she’ll speak to me another day” I am very saddened by the care/assistance I have received with a case I am a victim of. I feel helpless to a person I want to help so much, because they are putting me off and treating me like garbage.

But they were always helpful, always answered questions(and quickly), and always walked me through things to understand better. I was the embodiment of anxiety riddled, mess of a mother. But they were always there to calm my nerves and quickly handle whatever was thrown our way. She is also quit knowledgeable with adoptions! Shes straight forward and no bullshit. Questions? We have answers

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
