I had an unusual situation with my mortgage. Mr Weaver went out of his way to understand the issues and find a way to resolve them. He went above and beyond in dealing with the mortgage company and their attorneys. He was supportive and kind to us. I never felt embarrassed or uncomfortable. I would highly recommend him and his team for any and all problems.

Tim Weaver did a superb job handling my legal problem. Very respectful of my situation and a great listener, he never over-promised me anything. He is reasonably priced and my outcome (once he laid out all the evidence for me) was much better than expected. He did a great job explaining my situation and the options available. He even provided guidance on things I could do before we went to court that would ultimately be in my favor. He took advantage of every opportunity (no matter how small) that I truly believe eventually reduced the time and penalties I could've received. Tim's staff also did an amazing job "behind-the scenes" as they were always available to take my questions, provide information, or pass along my concerns to Tim when he was out of the office. Nobody wants to be in the position where they require an attorney. However, I wouldn't hesitate to hire Tim again if needed. He treats his clients like family members and never hesitates to go the extra mile for their benefit.

Isaac Newlin was very prompt to get my DUI case resolved. From my initial call for consultation, to the final pretrial date, Issac expressed the highest level of professionalism and compassion possible. His thorough research and dedication to my case was proven through the outcome of my case. Several aspects were reduced and some even dismissed. A less capable attorney would be hard pressed to produce such results. His staff were kind, compassionate and more than willing to work through any feelings of unease I had, questions about my case, or simply just getting an update. Highly recommend to anyone else with similar legal issues.

I was uncomfortable pursuing a personal injury claim, but I'd suffered an injury that left me unable to work for months and had to do something. At our initial meeting, Isaac put me at ease and gave me a realistic expectation of what a fair settlement might be and a sense of the timelines involved with this type of claim. Fourteen months later I received a settlement that allowed my wife and me to pay off my medical bills and covered the time when I'd been out of work. Isaac made an anxiety-provoking process stress-free. I strongly recommend him.

He showed up prepared to every court date and most of all he did not judge me. He treated me like a person and made me feel comfortable. I would and do recommend Mr. Kilpatrick and his firm to all of my family and friends. Thanks again Mr. Kilpatrick, Mark

I was railroaded by an officer. Stopped for no good reason and falsely accused of reckless driving after the cop realized I wasn't drunk. He was looking for people on the beach who were drinking. I took the false reckless driving charge to court. Steven kept me informed and even filed motions which allowed me to avoid having to enter the courtroom. The state dropped the charges when Steven filed a motion for a copy of the dispatch records as well as then name of the other officer on the scene. He did a great job and kept me informed!

I am 58 years old and I had hoped that I would go my entire life without needing the services of an attorney (other than preparing a WILL) but unfortunately I had a situation come up that I was forced to hire an attorney. I can honestly tell anyone/everyone that Ms. Martinez and her staff (Erika, Crystal, etc) have been a tremendous help to me over the past few months with my case! Not only are they very professsional with the way they have handled my case but they have also been very empathic with my situation as well which is greatly appreciated! They have been very prompt in returning my calls and e-mails and I really feel like they have truely listened to my questions and concerns and have answered them quickly and in great detail. I highly recommend the LAW OFFICES OF SUSAN A. MARTINEZ to anyone looking for an attorney!

Going through a divorce is never an easy thing, especially when the other party wants to be difficult. Ashley made the experience so much easier. She listened to my fears and concerns and kept me realistic. The other parties attorney was very rude and unethical on many occasions but Ashley stayed professional and caring. I am so grateful to her and her staff for helping me reach a settlement that works for my kids!

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.

Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
