Scott was very prompt with his responses and helpful. Navigating legal issues can be daunting and empathy goes a long way. My brother and I were very appreciative to get any feedback . It is so much easier for people to ignore questions or requests, but Scott went out of his way to respond in a direct manner.

After an initial meeting with Lyndsey Duncan, we chose her to prepare a trust for us. Throughout the entire process she was extremely patient (I tend to ask a lot of questions), efficient, knowledgeable, professional and at the same time personable. We also greatly appreciate all the help she provided regarding other issues! We whole hardheartedly recommend Lyndsey!!!

As a HOA management company we’ve used many law firms in the past; Thomae Law is the best for collecting on delinquent accounts. Eric Thomae is a truthful and honest attorney that we’ve used for six (6) years. Eric Thomae fights hard for his clients and is fair minded and kind. Eric Thomae also takes the time to explain everything to make an excellent decision for our communities.

I have used Mr. Thomae in my real estate business for a number of years, and I find Mr. Thomae to be ethical, smart, and fights for his clients in a smart way. It is evident to me that his first thought is his client, not his billable hours. I have a choice to use any attorney, and I chose to use this professional.

I hired Eric to help me protect an investment property. The whole case took almost a year due to the other party trying to play games but Eric stopped them at every turn. He is impressive and aggressive in the court room but when it came to explaining everything he was patient and kind. Not many companies, or people for that matter do what they say, stand by their word and do the right thing....Eric does that and more! I keep him on speed dial now.

Both my husband and I are first-borns and were designated to settle the estates of our respective parents. Wendy not only helped us navigate the “legalese” of what needed to be done respectively and quickly but also helped us set up our own Trust. She even went so far to meet with our daughter (at our request) who was visiting from out of state which gave us peace of mind that she will be in good hands when our time comes.

I work with seniors in transition and on estate cases. I have worked with many different estate planning attorneys, and with Wendy on several cases. I have never seen an attorney who works so hard. She is absolutely committed to her clients, does what is right for them even at her own expense. When I ask her complicated questions she either knows the answer, or knows how to get it quickly. I cannot recommend Wendy strongly enough!

She created a revocable trust which meets my needs and protects my family in the future. She explained why my out-of-state rental property should be in the trust. She is very thorough and handled other legal documents that I hadn't even considered until she explained how important they are in the full picture.

Natasha has represented me on two business matters, and I have had numerous conversations with her after these successful cases. A key for any attorney in my opinion is their ability to communicate and be prepared. Natasha is beyond outstanding in this area. She treats you like you are the most important part of her day instead of an interruption. She fights for you with the determination of a championship game. I couldn't be more willing to recommend her services.

My wife and I brought our family trust to Wendy Harn after we moved to Arizona from Ohio in 2006, and we retained her and made occasional updates to our trust since that time. She and her team have always been easy to work with, very personable and very patient in explaining the details of our trust. When my wife passed away several months ago, all of the work we had done with Wendy over the years paid off. The legal transition after my wife’s passing was smooth and straightforward, a true blessing at a vulnerable time. I feel very fortunate that we selected Wendy for our legacy and give her my highest recommendation.

Laura is a rare breed among legal professionals. She patiently explained everything and answered all my questions in easy-to-understand terms. I really felt like she was working -with- me instead of 'for' me, and enjoyed her candor when critical decisions had to be made... something you only get from your best friends, a rare thing. Laura helped me avoid several potential problems with my estate and trusts, and enabled me to protect my assets from being taken by the state. This allowed me to ensure that my long-term disability and health care costs were covered, while preserving my modest estate... I'm not wealthy, I merely want to pass my estate and trusts down to my children without burdening them with unnecessary legal issues. Laura helped me achieve all my goals, at a very reasonable price. I highly recommend her services and consider her a great friend.

Adam represented me in a personal injury case, I was involved in a 4 vehicle collision and the insurance company was not helping me in anyway. With Adam's help, the insurance company paid for all of my medical expenses. Adam was available for me when ever I called with any questions and Adam resolved my very confusing property damage claim. I highly recommend Adam.

Adam kept me informed throughout the process. It was clear that he knows what he is doing and can get the job done. He helped me get a great result when I was told by others that I wouldn't be able to get anything. I would definitely recommend and go back to Adam in the future.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
