Bryndis represented me on two separate landlord/tenant cases. In both cases, Bryndis did everything in her power to arbitrate on my behalf and only one case actually went to court. Bryndis is an excellent communicator and she listens to her clients and represents people the way they want to be represented, not vice versa. She also is very realistic and explains all possible outcomes so her clients don't count eggs before they've hatched. When she takes you on as a client she is wonderful about making herself available day and night and when she is unable to answer her phone or texts she responds as soon as she is available. Bryndis is a great attorney for the people.

My friend and I hired Bryndis back in December of 2011 after we moved into a building and unit that was completely infested with bedbugs. Bryndis went above and beyond her duties and not only guided me in directions that I could go myself to protect myself ( visits to the tenants union, department of health, building inspector) but she also referred us to a small claims expert. The process was unrelenting, arduous, and at many times we felt like our case may never be resolved but Bryndis kept us positive, informed us of the necessary steps, and she displayed sincerity for us and what we were going through. I'm happy to inform anyone that reads this that she is a great woman with a very beautiful spirit, and that she is a top notch lawyer. After 9 months, we were Bryndis' first small claims case won. The case went from small claims to superior and we were awarded $10,205.00 ($205.00) over the maximum amount allotted for small claims cases. Thank you Bryndis once again for your professionalism and hard work.

I had a horrible experience with an LDA (legal document assistant) who did not handle my needs according to what i had paid for. I sought the legal services of Jondea Erisman with Deseree Vance and Associates. My Trust was handled in a proffessional and timely manner. I couldn't be more pleased...

Terrible court appointed attorney. She made decisions for my children that negatively impact them to this day without taking the time to actually get to know them. She allowed them to be put in the hands of a emotional abuser. Stay far away from her and request a different attorney if the court appoints her. She was also not available and often ignored phone calls. She would also try to talk down to me since she felt she was in a position of control.

If you are reading this and need help no matter what your situation is, please do yourself a favor and start with a simple call to Catherine Vance. I was dealing with a DV case as the victim and up against another lawyer on my own. I reached out to Mrs. Vance with limited resources and bless Mrs. Vance heart, she helped me write a brief for my case that the Judge asked both party to write to argue their case for a vital decision in regards to grant a continuation of a protection order. Together both of us were able to put my DV case behind me and I was able to get everything I needed and wanted out of the case with Mrs. Vance assistance witting this brief on my behalf. This is being spoken from a person who living on social security income who thought no one with legal experience would even give me the time or day with my income level. Mrs. Vance truly works magic, she truly cares, and she is truly affordable even for lower income level people such as myself.

Commissioner Worley came into our classroom and was engaging, enthusiastic, and personable. He had an interesting activity to bring home voting rights for women, which made the girls in my class realize the importance of voting. The kids were really impressed by Commissioner Worley. Thank you so much!!!

Kurt Worley is now a Butte County Superior Court Commissioner. He allowed a woman to lie and present evidence against me, evidence I was not properly served with. I provided evidence that the plaintiff was lying and distorting the truth. The plaintiff also presented evidence at trial that I was not given, and Kurt allowed it. In conclusion, Kurt granted her a 3 year restraining order against me. Why? Because I threatened to write a negative review online about a business. Obviously, Kurt doesn't know about the first amendment. Reviews are free speech.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
