Mrs Neil is a dedicated and very helpful attorney. Meagan knows the immigration law and because of many interactions with Immigration officials in Anchorage she helped push through our applications very expeditiously and always with a smile! She treated my spouse and I with the utmost professional care yet like a family member too. I will be using her services for future immigration needs for sure. I can't recommend her enough.

Hannah has represented me for over a year now on serious criminal charges. She is very easy to get in touch with and always answers her phone and even responds to texts. if she is out of town with the OPA, it does not matter. She finds time for you. Even if its just to talk she is there for you 100%. There is no doubt in my mind that she will be a top attorney in the valley very soon. In the course of my dealing with her some new charges came my way and she was front and center making sure i did not make any mistakes which looking back now was crucial and something that i feel other attorneys would not have done. Hannah appears to be very well connected in the legal world and is very well known. The best way I feel to describe her is that she is a Lioness protecting you, her cub. Her rates are very fair and she cares about you're situation. She was in the jail visiting me before anyone else including my family, just seeing if there is anything I needed or that she could do. To me her honesty and loyalty is what makes her amazing. I will honestly say if you find yourself in a life altering situation that requires a need for a attorney, at minimum call her and you will see what i'm talking about.

Anyone reading this review should consider the source when reading the previous person's review…. Derek Koehler is one of the most excellent public defenders I, myself (or anyone requiring free representation) could ask for. Yes, it's true, if you sporadically attempt to contact him or wait until the last minute before going to court, then your chances of speaking with him personally may be slim. That being said; it clearly states on his voicemail that the best way to contact him is through email & if you heed that advice, he is very prompt & responsive. This man literally represents entire communities in the state of Alaska & I am not surprised that he doesn't go out of his way to contact or call back every single defendant he represents. If you don't want to deal with the hassle & inconvenience of attending court hearings, spending hundreds of dollars in fines & court fees or facing the negative consequences of the results of your actions, then I highly suggest NOT BREAKING THE LAW. Go figure, right!? I hate to be the bearer of bad news; but criminal activity, poor decision making, negligence & lack of common sense MAY result in unpleasant legal consequences such as but not limited to; incarceration & an unnecessary loss of time & money. In closing, my recently closed case could not have been handled any better, nor could there have been a better end result if I had hired an attorney and spent thousands on a retainer alone. Mr. Koehler is an exceptional public defender & any defendant who cannot afford their own representation would be lucky to have him.

I received Derek as my attorney and called him and left messages on a daily basis for 2 months. Not only did he NEVER call me he was never present in court for me 4 times. The same kid was there that told me Derek was "Swamped with 120 cases" and did not have any time to deal with my case and he would just "continue" my case again just like he did the last 4 times. This was after I spent $235 and flew in from out of town for a trial call that I was told by the hack that I did not even need to be present for! I can't wait to see what else my phantom "attorney" has done for me! I have shown up for court 4 times and was always told by someone else Derek was "In court" somewhere else and would not be there and my case needed to be continued!

They don’t answer calls, don’t return messages. They don’t maintain open communications with victims about future court dates and the nature of court dates. Asked whether they did any kind of background check on the perpetrator prior to offering a joke of a plea bargain for assault, they claimed they did one and did not turn up any record. Yet I found half a dozen examples of reckless prior conduct using a free background check service (JudyRecords). How is it I was able to find half a dozen prior records, with the same name, same date of birth, in a state the perpetrator previously lived in, and the same general type of behavior (reckless disregard for the safety of other people)? The district attorney’s office refused to fingerprint the perpetrator of assault, a process which would have yielded information answering the question of whether the perpetrator had ever been arrested previously using the same name or an alias. How can they offer a plea bargain or sentence a defendant without knowing for sure whether the perpetrator has a prior criminal record? A prior record is the very thing that establishes whether conduct is part of a pattern. Because the district attorney would not do this on their own volition, we asked this question in open court and judge Browning himself also acted like this assault case was as trivial as Jay-walking, saying he has nothing to do with police and district attorney matters, at which point the district attorney stood up and said they already talked to us about this. Thus far, I am not impressed with our Just-Us system.

We hired Elizabeth for a child custody case. From the moment we hired her, she gave us advice that was harmful to our case. She consistently tried to lengthen phone calls and rewrite documents in order to run up the bill, but not once did we feel she did something that was in our child’s best interest. She will tell you “ it should work” or “it should be okay,” but there is no action behind it. The other parent’s attorney walked all over her. By the time we realized she was not working our case and making progress, thousands of dollars were spent and it was too late to get another attorney. My teen daughter who was so hopeful for a change, became hopeless when nothing changed and Elizabeth did not fight for her voice to be heard.

She is absolutely the worst public defender. Does not stay in contact or explain legal strategy with client. ( I doubt she has one ) she refuses to file motions that are requested for example a bail review. We had to contact someone else in the office and had them schedule a bail review. Even the other public defenders said they were sorry we had her for an attorney. When the court date arrived she didn't even know her client had a bail hearing. This case has been open for over a month and the evidentiary hearing is in one week; she has yet to speak to witnesses and has only spoken with her client 3 times. If you get her I would suggest requesting a new attorney. I would not give her one star but it is mandatory. Hope this helps.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
