Mr. Carlin is generous with his information and completely trustworthy. He hails from a family of trustees and attorneys who are traditional and conservative in their approaches to family law and all of whom have impeccable integrity. He is the quiet voice behind big decisions. He treats your concerns and issues as if they were his own. He networks with the best financial people, who are highly rated and trustworthy. His demeanor is direct, honest and compassionate. His sense of humor and excellent judge of character give him a perspective that gives him an edge when it comes to negotiations. Although I no longer live in Ohio, I would rely on him for advise and direction of my legal concerns.

I had received a traffic ticket and had to go to court. Kathryn Joseph represented me in court. Not only did she arrive extra early to discuss the case with me and explain how things were going to be displayed but she was also very clever when speaking to the judge. When explaining things to me she spoke in MY language without all the legal mumbo jumbo and I understood things clearly. Her compassion and dedication to the case was very devoted to me and she did not seem distracted by anything. She was able to reduce my sentence and lower the fine I had to pay. I am 200% pleased with her outgoing work and dedication to my little case. I could not ask for a better lawyer and I assure you that you will feel the same or better with her exemplary service!

Attorney Biggerman dealt with company attorneys and my union to relieve an employment situation so that I was able to continue working at my job at a large corporation. His expertise leads. He handled them skillfully; and later, the attorneys and the court appearances. His preparation is top-notch. He produces masterful documents. He is responsive and keeps me informed in a timely manner, enabling me to make the best decisions in my case. Despite the pandemic delays, he continues to represent me with this same level of excellence. I am so glad he is on my side!

I found myself in a difficult situation with my former employer regarding a wrongful termination that led to problems involving a relocation agreement with my former employer. My former employer was motivated to recoup re-location dollars that I allegedly owed. The situation was difficult because of the way I was treated by management, I was point blank fired, and the employer acted quickly to allege that I re-signed (Re-location contract language stated that any employee that resigns is liable for $ owed). Now, I knew that the employer's allegations were false, but needed legal help. So with that said, I researched attorney's in the Cleveland area and my search pointed directly at Attorney Mark Biggerman. After a quick phone consultation, we scheduled an in person meeting to discuss further. Mark impressed me right off the bat by clearly explaining the law surrounding my situation and mapping out a well thought out strategy. After my initial meeting with Mr. Biggerman, I knew my situation would be resolved in my favor. To make a long story short, Mark fought my former employer and a collection agency to clear me of any wrongdoing (Saved 40K). Mark's efforts saved my family from financial ruin! If you are in a situation with a former employer, do yourself a favor and hire Attorney Mark Biggerman. Mark will always be a family friend for the amazing legal work that he provided for my family. Thank you, Mark.

I have hired Mark Biggerman for two projects, both having to do with issues related to my house--one an easement issue and the other a dispute with a neighbor about her gas line on my property. In both cases, Mark provided the documents I needed, and he worked in a timely fashion and was always available when I called him or needed him to be at my property. He has a calm presence, and he does his homework! Finally, his billing is very reasonable. I will also add that he knows well the parameters of his expertise, and he's willing to find another lawyer with the necessary skills if a job does not fall in his wheelhouse. I recommend him without reservation!

Sent me confidential email for another client, terrible communications, talked me out of what was best for me just to save herself work, but still racked up billable hours doing nothing for me. It felt like she was working for my ex. You're better off representing yourself.

My experience as a client of Lynn Schwartz was not positive. She was unresponsive to limited email communications. Ms Schwartz failed to provide me with an informed understanding of my legal rights despite multiple requests and was very dismissive with questions. I did not appreciate her role as an advocate, and certainly did not appreciate her role to zealously assert my position. She struggled to provide effective negotiation despite two years of representation. Ultimately, I found her to be ineffective in dispute resolution.

Rather than doing what is right for the children and representing the children's wishes, Ms. Adelman takes the easy way out. Most of what was submitted in her report to the court was without metit including therapist reports from 10 years prior that had no bearing on the present day situation! I was lied to about traveling for custody exchanges, among them things, and in the parenting agreement I adamantly did not agree to, but was told I had no choice but to sign, she stated she agreed with me that the children should not be left unsupervised and if problems occured, I should call children services! Her decisions have negatively impacted my children to the point of the schools calling children services, police needing to be present at custody exchanges on several occasions and the children almost being homeless until I stepped in. There will be action taken for the pain and suffering her very poorly evidenced recommendation has caused my children!

Dustin's wrote a very poorly written contract for me. Usually would not follow through with his promises to get something done by a certain time. He has made numerous cancellations. Once even on a court date. I never thought or expected this from an attorney. He did dismiss few traffic violations.... I gave him too many benefit of the doubt, but honestly he has a lot of growing up to do!!

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
