I hired a contractor to complete a large amount of work on my fixer-upper house I had purchased, which was also my first home purchase. The contractor I hired not only butchered the work he was performing, but he was further damaging my home, and did not even pass any inspections with my county! We had a contract signed for around $43,000. I called him over to discuss my concerns with his work, and he walked out on me! I ultimately terminated him due to his unprofessionalism and poor work. He filed a lien on my home so no other contractor or myself could touch it to continue the work on my home, and I couldn’t sell it considering! I contacted John, and John was cool, calm and collected the entire time since day 1, assuring me he know EXACTLY what to do! HE SURE DID! This was my first time ever needing to hire a lawyer, and he did not disappoint! He was very quick and got right to the nitty gritty of what needed to be done! He got my first lien removed, the contractor filed another, so he got that one removed as well and got the county to sign a judicial order prohibiting the contractor from filing any further liens with the recorders office! I was able to sell the house within the next week and have finally closed on my potential forever home! All thanks to John! If it wasn’t for John, I would still be dealing with a disaster and paying on a home I couldn’t even live in! If you EVER have any issues with a contractor doing the same things to you, trust John! I promise you won’t regret it! He will get the job done!

I retained JohnPaul to get something expunged from my record. At first he didn’t think that I qualified for expungement, but after some interpretation and reading more into the law, he felt that he had a valid point to argue. Well, he was right. He argued the point and was able to convince the court. My record is now expunged and a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I couldn’t have asked for a better outcome. JohnPaul is knowledgeable, professional and prompt with communicating. If I ever need legal assistance in the future, he will be the first person I call.

We had an issue that required us to hire an attorney. This was a first for our family and we reached out to Mr. Ivec. He was professional through the entire process. He explained to us what we should expect and helped us through the entire process. We were required to make appearances twice in court and he was with us both times and handled things efficiently. In the end, everything happened exactly as was expected and we were very happy with the legal outcome in large part due to Mr. Ivec's assistance.

Vince is an awesome attorney for realestate. He kept me informed and actually made me feel like he was looking out for me as he would his own family. He is very professional. He ALWAYS returns your calls and answers all questions no matter how many you ask. He made sure the seller and his attorney did things right instead of standing by and letting my excitement about the house cloud my judgement and letting them get by with a partial fix to a foundation problem.

We hired Brian to help with our son's mistake. He was friendly and knowledgeable. He guided us through everything we needed to know and alleviated our fears. His communication was excellent and he got us a result we think was more than fair. We would definitely use him again, and plan on it for some estate planning we need to take care of.

I hired Barbara Morton to assist with my divorce. All paperwork that needed to be done for court was always sent a day before the court day not sufficient time to look over the documents. I did not feel I was apart of the decision nor was the paperwork explain to me. Even once the divorce was finalized, I still had paperwork that was not completed and submitted which impacted me financially.

I hired Laura twice for post decree issues. She is the only Attorney who got results in my favor! I wish I hired her for my divorce. I recommend her to anyone, she will fight for you and is smart, she saw things I was entitled to that I was unaware of. She can deal with bullies like ex husbands and their lawyers. She is tough and honest, she doesn’t let cases drag on and on.

I don't really know how to fairly review attourneys but it was very expensive. Court case drag on forever . last bill was 3 times more expensive than i expected. I didnt expect a great end result but for the money i paid i feel it didn't meet my expectations and felt cheated . could have been worse but should have been better.

As a real estate broker for 28 years, I have had the pleasure of working with Jim Flanagan for many years on numerous transactions. He's always been very professional and knowledgable. Most importantly, he and his paralegals have great follow through, resulting in smoother transactions with a higher percentage of closed deals.

If you have to deal with him after he has been paid his fees, GOOD LUCK. He clearly did not seem to have the desire to be patient enough to allow me try and figure out why I was so confused after my closing. I do not believe I have ever gotten an email from a professional such as the one I received from him the following day when he incorrectly thought I emailed his paralegal after I spoke to him. This is in addition to the fact that I was never aware of the extra charges he was charging me until we first met at closing.

The Flanagan office worked with us on a sale and a purchase of a home in Naperville. The transactions had challenges and complications and James did not make things easier for us. Flanagan lacked knowledge, patience, professionalism and common decency. At times he was flat out rude. This behavior towards clients is completely unacceptable. It made the whole process extremely unpleasant. I would not recommend this law office to anyone. The only positive was that the paralegals did work hard and got the transactions done. Despite the rude attorney. Stay away.

This attorney ruins lives. She is driven by money, bills fraudulently, and is one of the cruelest attorneys I have met. She does not know much, if anything, about autism and only makes situations worse. She will get caught in lie after lie and then blame the parent. She drives children (and parents) to emotional breaking points and has no concern for families and her impact upon them.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
