Consulted with me regarding my deposition in a lawsuit involving battery charges filed against me and my employer. Ms. Gutierrez helped put my mind at ease and gave me a very accurate sense of what the case would be like moving forward . I would absolutely go back.

I consulted with Attorney Gutierrez with a Personal Injury matter. She was very thorough and knowledgeable. She really took her time and explained the process to me. I felt that she really was there to help and not just "sweet" talk me to hiring her. Because of her great advise I actually didn't have to hire any attorney at all. But if I did, Attorney Gutierrez is my first and only choice. I highly recommend Attorney Gutierrez.

My wife & I were looking in to making a trust/will/etc., and started out using the websites that make it seem so cheap and easy. After being thoroughly confused and discovering all the extra costs associated with these sites, we came to the realization that they were not the great deals they're made out to be, and we needed an expert in estate planning. My wife & I are so happy we found Tom Christopher. Tom is honest, trustworthy, and a genuinely good person. He treated us with respect, answered all our questions, explained things in plain English the way a lay-person can understand, and made us feel comfortable throughout the whole process. His fees are more than reasonable and he will not nickel & dime you when you call with questions or need to make adjustments. As a lawyer myself, I know the difference between quality legal representation and someone who is just going through the motions. With something as serious and sensitive as estate planning, having quality representation from a great human being is invaluable. Tom Christopher provides exactly that & I highly recommend his services.

We had put off the Will/Trust for years because we thought it was a major, complicated undertaking. TC made the process so easy and explained everything clearly and we were done in a couple meetings and a phone call. The piece of mind he was able to give us with the Trust as well as his offer to be a continued resource made him invaluable. We would and are recommending to him to family and friends.

I needed a professional and highly communicative attorney to review a critical business contract on short notice. A co-worker suggested Artin's services on Thumbtack, so I reached out. I like to communicate almost exclusively by email and text, which he was terrific with. Likewise, Artin was available quickly when I had follow-up questions. His demeanor is friendly and professional. Most importantly, he was extremely competent. I have done a lot of ad-hoc legal work myself and can recognize when someone knows their stuff. I'd hire Artin again without hesitation.

We hired Artin to add an amendment to our Owners' Agreement. We could not be more satisfied with his work, his expertise, and his communication through the process. We told him about the changes we wanted to make in our Owners' Agreement. He came back to us with a timeline and budget and stuck to both of them. Artin was very communicative throughout the process. Letting us know when to expect responses and drafts. Throughout the process, we felt that Artin was a part of the team. He was great at listening and providing us with professional feedback. We always felt like we were in the driver's seat and he was guiding us to our destination. At times we would defer to his experience, where he would help frame things in a way that would allow us to decide on how to proceed. In short, it was a collaborative work-relationship that worked well for us. 100% would work with again. 100% would recommend.

Attorney Wood took the time to review all the documents I had provided him and pulled out the paragraphs of the contract that could help our case. He even made additional research and talked with one of his colleagues on a few details he was less knowledgeable about. Even though it was a very small case financially speaking, he did not spare his time or efforts and his knowledge gave us a peace of mind that no-one else had been able to provide us until we talked with Mr. Wood. He did all of this for free as he thought his presence and involvement may actually be prejudicial to our case. I would have hired him without any hesitation if my case would have required counsel's presence. Highly highly recommended.

Hired Mr. Salomon for a what could have been a complex litigation case against a county agency and was very impressed with the results and time it took to settle the case. He is very experienced, knowledgable, HONEST, patient but also aggressive. I was kept very informed with the status of my case and given the best advice that would benefit me the most without any other intention other than acquiring the best results all around. I would highly recommend Mr. Soloman. I have never been more satisfied with any other Attorney.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
