Franklin had probably one of his simplest divorces ever with mine. He was easy to talk to from the first meeting till the last. Always returned my calls. He got everything done that needed to be done. In a timely manner. Franklin done it the right way. I feel outside of work he is a great guy. I would highly recommend him to handle whatever you need legally done.

Franklin did an excellent job with our custody battle. He understood the court system and what was needed. We hired Franklin in the during the summer and he made a point to hold a hearing in Aug so my daughter could be enrolled in our school system. We were able to show the courts how well she did during the year at our house and in school. During this time, Franklin had instructed us as to what documents we needed to obtain. I would recommend Franklin Kirk for child custody lawyer.

Always kept us informed of what he was doing, returned calls and emails promptly and when asked questions always answered us with respect. Did not treat us like we were asking dumb questions and explained things so we could understand them.

I have worked with a many lawyers and would recommend Chelsey Dahm, I used a collection agency to recover on a judgement for me... that did not work and wasted time and money. I contacted Alderman Law Firm to enforcing a judgment I had in another state.Although I was in Arizona and she was in Wisconsin the entire thing went smoothly.. They took care of everything from domesticate the judgment and filing and serving the paperwork to garnish wages. It was done quickly and I am so glad I called them... I thought I had exhausted my options and I would never see a penny that was owed to me. If you are looking for a honest, hardworking lawyer who communicates with their client, Chelsey S Dahm is who I recommend.

I contacted Alderman Law Firm from searching the web since I am in a different state and wanted an attorney who knew Wisconsin law. I had contacted other firms and they wound not even give me a response. Although we didn't meet face to face, I never felt my issues/case did not matter. I absolutely appreciate EVERYTHING they have done for us. You and your agency has always been responsive to my concerns and kept me informed. Thank you very much!

Attorney Graves is ethical, compassionate, and thorough. I have worked with her over the years and found her humanity unequaled among attorneys I have known.

My ex and I had her for an amicable uncontested divorce. She wasn’t particularly transparent about the process or overly timely with communication. We had some property which needed to be dealt with and she took it upon herself to do it the way she thought it needed to be done. My ex and I hadn’t thought of it and then it became a minor point of contention because it was already in the document. She could have just asked us how we wanted to handle it. She put together the Marital Settlement Agreement and it had two glaring omissions. It didn’t mention child support or maintenance. She had already filed it with the court so had to make it an amendment. Just not as professional as I would have liked and she complicated an otherwise easy divorce.

Uses this office for bankruptcy. 2 years and it's not final. I have showed up at every scheduled apt only to be asked what did I need?! Always told to come back and they would get to it. Had a court hearing scheduled on foreclosure - no one from the office showed up. It seems his wife runs the office and doesn't pass on information. Basically she took my money and hasnt done a thing. She told me not to tell my mortgage company we had an attorney. Extremely unprofessional. Doesn't return calls or emails. The judge at court stated she wants to know what Attorney Christian is doing and is going to demand and explanation from him regarding his handling of our case. Don't hire them for any reason

Be aware of the fact that just because a lawyer is appointed by the courts in a CHIPS case, the financial responsibility lies upon the individual. Atty. Christian has no interest in arguing any case as he gets paid either way. He was of no help whatsoever in my CHIPS case, argued with me that questions I had were "Not his job", would accept no emails at his office, habitually was uninformed as to dates and times of various meetings and hearings surrounding my case.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
