I contacted Allison to assist me with the sale of my Minnesota lake home property. She worked with the buyer and their attorney, prepared all the necessary documents and made the process for me easy and affordable. I would definitely recommend Allison for assistance with this kind of real estate transaction.

My husband and I asked Allison to prepare our wills, health care directive and durable power of attorney. We met with her to execute the documents and she explained how each document would be used, additional signatures needed and where to store them.

Run. I could quote the guy in writing. He didn’t look over anything until two days before a major event after a year under contract and 10k paid. Just to run up the bill last minute to say settle, but “you could have got more than double” after the fact.. Botched the settlement agreement and the opposing lawyer roasted him on the fact. Would not recommend.

Jodi is a great Lawyer. I first used her for getting custody of my daughter. She was so helpful the first time that about 4 years later when we had to go to court again I called her right away for her help. She really tries to help you get what is best for your child and listens to what you have to say. If I ever need a lawyer again, she will be the first person I call.

I hired Jodi Langhorst See to represent me with my divorce in August 2015. After 2 years, I have not receive one document or filings via US Mail, but only through email which were not always appropriately signed by all parties on the emailed copy. This was a difficult divorce. As I asked questions and looked to Jodi for advise as to what was in my best interest? I received some answers and options but they were never followed through. Most of my questions were not explained to me so I could make clear choices with understanding. The answers I did receive changed every time we met. A lot of time she did not even remember what she advised me to do and they never were written in a document submitted to myself or the opposing attorney throughout negotiations. She did not write up the stipulation orders, but had opposing attorney write them, which have resulted in my inability to clearly understand what it stated. I would receive emails of the opposing attorney from Jodi with information that was left for me to interpret on my own understanding. When I would ask questions, she would appear frustrated with me and I never felt comfortable knowing what I might be agreeing to. I filed for the divorce with her, stating clearly my expectations in 2015. She filed one step at a time; first for temporary custody and support; approximately one year later we had our FENE; then followed, what I was told to be a custody evaluation, but ended up being only a parenting assesment, that would not hold up if a trail came to be. All this should have been taken care of at the pre trial, but was not. She has unfairly charged me over $30,000 in fees and filings over a 2 year period only to withdraw from my case a month before trial. I am receiving far less than a fair settlement based on the fact that I cannot hire an attorney to fairly represent me this close to trial and must represent myself at this point. Had Jodi filed all the proper motions upon retaininment all the facts and mediations, as well as custody evaluations would have been completed within 6 months from time of filing and we could have been done closer to a year rather 2 years. If you are looking for someone to be looking out for your best interest in a divorce, I would not recommend this attorney.

I started my divorce process back in 2020. Mallory was amazing every step of the way. Mallory has a great knack for taking your thoughts and helps word them appropriately so they make sense and convey what you want to say. She is also a great advocate for her clients, shows empathy and makes sure clients understand the possible outcomes of each path. I couldn't have made it through this 3 year process without her and the wonderful paralegal staff.

I have seen a lot of lawyers in my time, however, this one is one of the most expensive-to-under productive in my time. I have never felt I was used so much purely for business revenue than I did with this attorney and his law firm. Although he charged me from everything, and I do mean everything, for his time, thoughts, and coffee I do felt he kept me up to date on everything. Then, after looking at his bill I can see why. He charged for e-mails, phone calls, and general time. What is that? Furthermore he was star struck with adversarial attorneys. The last thing I want is my attorney to be star struck with the other side. I had little confidence in my attorney's ability and knowledge but had to resolve the issue. The issue came out bad for me. I definately cannot recommend this lawyer. In my solid opinion, not worth the pay he gets for his practice, but again, this is my opinion.

I hired Roxanne as my attorney to assist me with some post divorce issues. She worked on my case for nearly two months and nothing was accomplished. I asked her more than once to stick to the issues at hand. She refused. She actually made matters worse for me and then sent me a large bill.

Mr. McGrath presented himself as neutral but hardly performed in a neutral manner. His spousal maintenance calculations and observations about the later tax consequences of the settlement were misleading and led to a settlement I later regretted after some further investigation into situation. He presented best and worst case scenarios that all favored the ex-spouse. I will probably spend much money in the next several years trying to undo the damage done as a result of this mediation. It would have been better to take my chances in court.

Kevin McGrath conducted my mediation and financial arbitration. During the mediation Kevin went back and forth between the two rooms for three hours repeating what the other party had said. He offered no advice on how the courts would view the situation and in the end we were farther apart than when we started. During the financial arbitration, Kevin expanded the time frame scope and awarded my ex a pre-divorce asset that was legally divided in the divorce decree three years prior. When asked if his decision was legal, he responded by saying, "it doesn't matter, this is my decision". Kevin closed the record at the end of the session that morning. His contract states that he is to issue a decision/award no later than ten days after the close or receipt of the final memorandum. Twenty six days later (after repeated requests for the report) Kevin issued the report with numerous inaccuracies from what the record was closed with. When I sent an email pointing out the numerical and typographical inaccuracies, Kevin sent a return email to both parties stating that he was permitting a response from the other party because I had sent an "unsolicited request to amend the Award of Arbitrator". In the end, Kevin checked his notes and I was correct. Unfortunately, I would urge anyone considering Kevin for mediation or arbitration to consider other options.

My daughter had him for dispute resolution. He didn't go by the court orders and made up his own rules. When all was said and done, he awarded the Father more time than the courts gave him in the actual Court Order. Attorneys please be aware that if the judge orders your clients to choose a Dispute Resolution advisor, this guy wasn't even interested in anything on the mothers side. He did not do what he was hired to do. AND, once he settles a dispute (if you don't agree with his decision) you have to appeal it in court. The judge most likely will not question the Dispute Resolutioners decision. Just costs you more money. Mothers/Lawyers, beware!!!

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.

Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.

Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
