Carter Law Offices helped my wife and I with the recent close on our home. We worked directly with Rick at the recommendation of our realtor, and I'm so glad we did. First, Rick made sure to make himself available any time we had questions. He gave us his direct mobile number and made it clear he was happy to help talk us through any process we were in in as much detail as we felt we needed and to "just call if you need anything." In addition to excellent communication, Rick also has a calm confidence that comes through in the way he spoke with us and practices law. Rick was incredibly thorough in the closing process and not only moved quickly to secure a fast and easy conclusion to the sale, but also to protect my wife and I as much as possible in the process. In short, Rick and Carter Law Offices are everything that anyone purchasing property could hope to find in a law office. Kind, efficient, rigorous, and knowledgeable. Thank you, Rick!

I recently sold a condo without using a realtor. I googled real estate attorneys and found Rick Carter to handle the closing. He was very knowledgeable and personable. After our first conversation on the phone Rick sent me a packet of valuable information. I knew exactly what I needed to do on my end for the closing to go smoothly. He was easily accessible anytime I had a question. He kept me informed throughout the whole process and continued to send me important information that I needed. I went to his office in Reading only one time. All the paper work was organized and ready for me to sign. I signed documents allowing Rick to represent me so I didn’t have to be at the closing. The process went very smoothly thanks to Rick. I was able to head to my home in Florida and not wait weeks for the closing. I received a check the day after the closing. I must add his services are reasonable. The quote he gave me on day one was exactly what I paid. I highly recommend Carter Law Offices!

We recently used Carter Law Offices to assist us with the sale of our home in Reading and for the purchase of our new home. I highly recommend Rick and his team, they provided excellent communications of how the real estate sales process works, provided clear and concise explanations of the documents we needed to sign, and worked with us to close on both properties remotely. If you're considering the sale of your home, I recommend Carter Law Offices without hesitation.

Shivani did an excellent job throughout the home purchasing process. She was very professional, responsive and helpful to all our inquiries. She vigorously represented us when we had an issue with the sellers and helped us reach a fair compromise. We would gladly work with her again for purchasing another home.

I was impressed by Josh's ability to persuade the judge to rule in my favor in my divorce. He came to all hearings well prepared and filed detailed documents that were better researched and more articulate than what my wife's attorney filed. His efforts truly paid off, and I am now happily divorced. Josh was honest about the pros and cons of my case, and did not make any false promises. My expectations were surpassed, and I cannot recommend Josh Garick enough.

Bill Crowley is an incredible lawyer. He has excellent knowledge of the law and how the system works. He has great communication skills and informs his clients routinely of progress on a case. I hired Mr Crowley to recover money invested into a company. I could not get money back from this company even though it had become very successful. He kept after them and convinced them it was in their best interest to buy back my stock. Without Mr Crowley's persistence and legal knowledge, I would not have recovered my investment.

As a fellow real estate attorney, I can confidently say that Matt is one of the best bankruptcy and real estate attorneys around. Although we are technically competitors, I've referred several clients to Matt and he's done a wonderful job. Any client would be lucky to have a talented and dedicated lawyer like Matt on his/her side.

I hired Matthew to guide me on my own personal rights while going through mediation with my ex-spouse. Even though he was not representing me in court, he made me feel like my case mattered and that I mattered. He personally read all my emails and messages and responded in a very timely manner. I felt like he came very well prepared to our Zoom meetings and helped me feel confident going into my mediation sessions with a very difficult personality. Highly recommend Matthew!

Valerie was wondering in handling my case. She answered all my questions and also took the time to explain the process to me in full. She also was there for me to calm me down a bit when negotiations where heated. She guided me to make the smart decisions and what was best for me in the long run. I was extremely happy with her and with how everything worked out.

I've worked with many attorneys over the years in a professional capacity, and a few in my personal life. Attorney Valerie Ross is the most skilled and intelligent and personable attorney I have ever worked with. She listens to your needs, concerns, and issues, let's you know how the process goes, and manages to get you out on the other side with a fair resolution. As another reviewer noted, her agreements are crafted with tremendous skill and foresight. She added things into mine that I never thought of and didn't notice, but that became key later on. Excellent work. Consummate professional while still maintaining that human relationship with her clients. Couldn't be more pleased with the work she has done for me.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
