Tracey became our attorney due to word of mouth. My husband and I went in for a consultation and was very impressed with what she proposed. We both found her to be honest, competent, and knowledgeable about the law. She handled a real estate issue for us and created effective strategies to win. She fought for our rights and handled the situation with excellent results. She treated us as though we were her only clients. She took her time to explain certain situations one-on-one and we felt extremely comfortable with her. Her main objective was to fight for our rights, and she definitely did that. Thank you again Tracey! The outcome was successful!

Ms Wheeler helped I and my spouse file chapter 7 bankruptcy. I "thank God" i found this wonderful lawyer. She is so so "down to earth". Her office/work environment is remarkable. You would think you needed a million bucks to become her client but i assure you that is not the case. Her rates are very reasonable. Tracey is very "client friendly" and very knowledgeable. She did not try to "hustle" me and she spoke very honestly about everything. After working with her I felt like I could talk to her about anything. Tracey answered my emails even though i ofter emailed her after hours. She filed my case in a timely manner and by the date that i requested. I requested my case be filed within like 3 or 4 days after meeting with her and Tracey made it happen. She knew her job very well and kept me well informed on everything. I was totally satisfied and trust me, I am hard to satisfy when I am spending my money. I could not stand dealing with lawyers prior to me meeting Ms. Wheeler. The ones in the past fast talked, hustled me out of money, and did absolutely nothing. Even when certain details were missed as far as the paperwork was concerned, Tracey happily corrected it and kept the ball rolling. She was dead on as regard to the time it would take for the case to be heard and everything else. If you want a lawyer who is down to earth, knowledgeable, thorough, hardworking, understanding, expedient, pretty, patient, and honest then Tracey Wheeler is your woman. She will not disappoint.

Mr. Gutscher is a highly respected criminal defense and labor law attorney in Michigan, with hundreds a case representations. Apparently one individual did not like the advice Mr. Gutscher provided in a case in which the individual was criminally charged. Any one with a degree of common sense will know that you cannot please everyone all of the time. Bottom line is Mr. Gutscher does excellent work and is in high demand for his expertise.

After being charged with a fictitious crime by a prosecutor that was unqualified to take the case, I was assigned Doug Gutscher as my union-appointed defense attorney. He refused to even listen to my side of the story until he read the police report, because he didn’t want to “draw any conclusions”. After I requested that he file a motion to have the case reassigned to an independent prosecutor, Doug refused my request and referred to it as “petty and frivolous”. Considering that Doug’s only recommendation was that I take a plea, I discontinued his representation and hired my own attorney. Not surprisingly, my new attorney had the originally assigned prosecutor recused and the State AG assigned my case to an independent prosecutor…who declined to prosecute the ridiculous charge. It’s unfortunate that POAM collected 10 years’ worth of union dues from me and the best they could provide for my legal representation was Doug Gutscher. His unprofessionalism and lack of communication skills were very disappointing.

Worst attorney you could ever hire , he stole 5k from me and I did 6 months in county because of him , I told him I had a video and a witness he ignored me and proceeded with the preliminary exam. If he would have used my video and witness I would have never got bound over, he's 80 years old and needs to retire. He owes me 5k and 6 months in jail, he says I was going to prison , after I fired him procession offered jail time server 3 years probation, he tried charging me 15k to send me to the crazy house when it was a probation case !!!

I hired Krista to handle a probate matter. It took many, many months longer than it should have. She repeatedly told me she was going to perform a particular service today, then I would discover several weeks later that she never did what she said she would do weeks earlier. This happened over and over. It was always someone else's fault, never her fault. She is very good at making excuses, but terrible at getting things done. If you want an attorney to get a job done look elsewhere. If you want an attorney that will take forever to get something done, but will always have an excuse, Krista is the attorney for you.

Krista is great at getting a retainer but poor on servicing client needs. She missed deadlines, gave me incorrect information and was unavailable for over a month with No explanation. Prepared and sent documents to me for signature that included glaring typographical errors that would have resulted in a financial burden to me if I didn't proofread the documents she prepared. Do not hire her if you need your probate case handled professional in a timely manner.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
