Working with Randy has been a pleasure, he took great care of me and my case, keeping me up to date with everything that was going on. He is accommodating, knowledgeable, vastly experienced with personal injury law, and ensured I would be generously compensated. Which I was. Randy is honest and if you need advice outside his expertise, he does not hesitate to refer you to the best in that field, which is what he did for a close friend. His staff is warm, sharp and are seasoned professionals who make you feel like you are a top priority whenever you speak with them. I highly recommend Randy Shuman - you will not be disappointed!

Me and my family are extraordinarily happy with the service that I received from attorney Firicano, and the outcome of my impossible legal situation. Attorney Firicano and her paralegal (Jason) worked very fast every step of the way, ensuring which gave me comfort and confidence in the knowledge that I was an important client. I have to also say the price was extremely reasonable for the legal assistance that I received from Firicano Law. Once again I cannot underscore how much of an impossible situation that I found myself in, and the outcome of my legal situation was beyond the best judgment that could be attained for the legal situation that I found myself in. Thank you so much attorney Firicano and paralegal Jason for all of your help.

This is a late review. Attorney Dan represented me for an auto accident that happened in September 2015. He was not my first lawyer in this case. He was actually my third and it was because of circumstances. Would like to first explain the background: I am a dental hygienist and was working full-time hygiene for 3.5 years before this car accident happened. I was rear-ended on 93 traveling north bound under the tunnel about to get onto the Zakim bridge. I was transported to MGH Hospital in an ambulance and my car was towed. I sustained neck and back injuries which in the end caused me to not maintain a full-time status as a dental hygienist due to the chronic pain I was experiencing while I was trying to maintain my job. My first lawyer had to pass my case on to his associate due to medical reasons. Even when he was my lawyer, he was never in his office, nor was he reliable to respond to my texts or emails. It was like I was talking to a wall. When this first lawyer transferred my case onto his associate, it was this lawyer's paralegal that sent me an email to inform me of this transition. This second lawyer was then transferred my case and all supporting documents. This was over 6-8 months after the date of the auto accident (my dates are a little hazy because it's been so long). After having this lawyer for about a year (now closing to 2 years after the car accident) or more, this lawyer and his paralegal kept reminding me that there was a 3-year limit on submitting for a car accident case. This second lawyer informed me that he has worked on a lot of cases like mine and did not think that I would not get as much. He told me that he was not on the page as what I believed what this case was worth. So this lawyer, sent me a letter, stating that he is "leaving my case due to lessening the volume he is taking on at this time" but based on our last conversation, it was not positive. Now to talk about Dan Occena. He was recommended to me by a friend who had previously represented for a car accident. My friend and I, weirdly, both got into our own separate car accidents within a span of one month. She had treatment and legal closure within one year. She was happy with the outcome of her legal dispute. I needed more treatment than she did, but the moment that I needed any legal direction, I did not get any from the first two lawyers. Once I met with Dan, he reviewed my case and discovered that the second lawyer did not get all the files from the first lawyer. Therefore, him and I both knew that this case was already a mess. Not because of the incident itself or the treatment I had to receive, but because it was like there was "TOO MANY HANDS IN THE POT" kind of situation. What was great about Dan was that he was not intimidated by the mess, he was not turned off by the "multiple representation" I had thus far, and he was honest and spoke in a manner that was much more humane than most attorneys I had spoken to! (I HAVE WORKED WITH ENOUGH LAWYERS TO COMPARE). From the first day I met him in May 2017 until the day I received my settlement check in September 2017, he clearly had the least amount of time and was the most effective in my case and was able to get the settlement I was happy with! Throughout the time that Dan had represented me, he was quick to respond to my questions and was always immediate to returning any of my calls. He kept me posted about everything he did, while he was researching or reviewing information to support my case. Dan honestly took the mess he was given, re-organized it and re-collected what he had to, and get this case wrapped in a way it should have been done in the first place. He was transparent, honest, and efficient in how he practiced and I appreciated that the most about him. I recommend him 110% and I would hope to never need him again (I pray not to get into another car accident!), but if I knew someone looking for a lawyer, he would be my first and only choice to recommend.

I initially met Dan a few years ago when I hired him to represent my mother's affairs and I was really impressed with him! Great guy, very humble and just a down to earth guy. Trust is everything and he is definitely very trustworthy, fair and very reasonable with his pricing. Dan also tries to make himself available to his clients despite how extremely busy he always is... he makes time for you. As an attorney he is the best, but more importantly as a person he is one of the nicest people you could meet and I know that he will thrive in this business and continue to over exceed his expectations. I recommend Dan to everyone I know. Outstanding attorney!

I hired Anthony in 2012 when I was working in Afghanistan to deal with a contempt case. I was his client for the purpose of filing contempt charges against the ex-wife and modifying the current orders we had in place. Mr. Rao communicated well when I was deployed, but once I got to the US the communications were very scarce. There was always an excuse as to why there were no returned phone calls. Hired in November 2012 and here we are November 2012, all he has done is file one document with Dukes county and it turns out it was the wrong one. This attorney does not return calls, texts, emails, or correspondences of any kind unless you become "The squeaky wheel". On the up-side, his pricing is fair when we first spoke and I thought I was getting a deal. Unfortunately, nothing has happened in my case since the attorney STILL has not filed the correct paperwork regardless of my please. I understand that Dukes county is quite the distance from his office, but this is not an excuse to delay filings and get traction on this old case. I am highly disappointed and further broken by the lack of respect and attention from this attorney. I do not recommend Mr. Rao.

I decided to retain Attorney Rao to represent me in an ongoing contempt case and was extremely impressed with his professionalism and clear knowledge of all aspects of family law. I was really anxious, and had a great deal of questions and concerns, and Attorney Rao did a great job of answering my questions and explaining the good, bad and ugly of my case. He also walked me through each step of the process and was able to provide me with a clear understanding of what was taking place. Attorney Rao was aggressive with opposing counsel when the situation called for it and was able to present my case to the judge in a very clear and concise manner. If I ever need assistance in the future I will most certainly contact Attorney Rao and feel confident in recommending him. JF - Boston

I would highly recommend Attorney Kim-Marie Phelan if you find yourself in the "divorce chapter" of your life. I always felt that Kim had my best interests at stake throughout the divorce proceedings. She was extremely thorough with details pertaining to drafts, judgments, financial forms, pretrial memos, to the separation agreement itself. She was honest & upfront as to how long the process would take & what the approximate overall investment would be. Divorce can be a painful & arduous process to go through; that said, you want to make sure you have a team you can wholeheartedly trust. Kim & Lea ARE that team!

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
