Daniel Lauber assisted two of my company's with zoning issues pertaining to 3 different CBRF's or group homes for the elderly / disabled. He attended council meetings, talked with city attorneys, met with city planners as well as the mayors. He also, assisted us with meetings with the neighbors. He is respected by the city attorneys and they listen to him closely. His credentials seem to put fear into city planners / attorneys, and he does get results. I would recommend him for any legal needs for I know he always does his research and is always well prepared for meetings / court. He will never let you down.

If you've ever tried to zone a halfway house (for any special population), you know that an act of Congress won't get it done. It takes an act of God. Mr. Lauber was invaluable to my zoning efforts to obtain a special use permit to operate a community corrections facility for convicted felons in Colorado. Since he remained in Chicago and all the communication was done via phone and email, the details of communication became even more important. I had a failed attempt (at another location) approximately 2 years earlier and was nervous that all my work on this project would end the same way. I contacted Mr. Lauber after reading about his expertise with halfway houses. He partnered with me in the exact manner that I needed. Based on feedback I received from my previous attempt, I knew that I had to actually do the zoning hearing presentation, not an attorney (I really think this varies based on local politics). Mr. Lauber worked with me to gather all the necessary research, conduct a neighborhood informational meeting, and plan and develop my presentation to the zoning board. Perhaps most importantly, he was an excellent cheerleader. When the going got tough, he was upbeat (but realistic) and eager to support my efforts and challenge me to get the next step done rather than get lost in anxiety. His knowledge of zoning law in general and his willingness to get up to speed on my local zoning laws was exceptional. He communicated directly with the planning dept when I ask him to and gave me advice on how to handle it when I wanted to deal with it personally. In other words, he let me drive the train. He was there to offer support and expertise as I needed. Thankfully, I listened to him. The process of informing everyone under the sun prior to the hearing was important. The zoning hearing was ugly but our presentation was impressive and really did not give the zoning board any option other than to vote in the affirmative. The zoning hearing lasted from 5 pm until 10:30 pm. The first person I called after the hearing was my wife. The second person was Daniel Lauber. With the combination of experience, knowledge and trustworthiness, you would be making a mistake to go with someone else.

Over a 2 year period I was represented by Catherine Byrne and found the experience to a good one when it came to representation. She was prompt, detailed and always well prepared in her presentation. What I found most enlightning was responsiveness in getting to know me as a father and not just a client. I think this helped a great deal in how she approached the representation. She was able to make things happen, get us in and out of court and have all issues addressed. Catherine is well respected in family court and always treated the process with respect. She is truly a caring attorney and I have already recommended her. I know that through this entire ordeal I felt safe and that I was being represented by someone who had the best interest of me and my children at the top of the list.

Catherine is a fantastic attorney! She is extremely knowledgeable in family law, well known and respected amongst her peers and is dedicated to winning. She's definitely worth the money! Catherine took on my case knowing that it would be an uphill battle. She and her staff were great keeping me informed and always sent me emails AND hard copies of all motions and responses that she filed on my behalf. She is a dedicated attorney that spent a tremendous amount of time on my case. She is aggressive, determined and results oriented. Cases can get very costly, especially if your case goes to trial. However, I don't believe Catherine deliberately bills hours to inflate cost. On the contrary, in my case, Catherine fought hard to resolve my case however my ex-husband and his attorney keep prolonging our case by being uncooperative, unresponsive and unwilling to negotiate. My case did indeed go to trial. During my trial, Catherine came in fully prepared with facts, documents, and case law that backed up each argument. She was focused, prepared, and confident! As I sat in court, I remember thinking how glad I was that I had her on my side! As a result or her knowledge, hard work and dedication, we were victorious! The bottom line is when you are going through the process of selecting an attorney, your really do get what you pay for! And, it's equally as important to note, that - as a client - you get what you give. Without question, it behooves clients to be COMPLETELY honest & forthright with Catherine and provided her with all the facts and the information she requests in a timely fashion. By providing her with the information she needed quickly, she was able to work efficiently and focus on the law and how it applied to my case. I honestly can't say enough great things about Ms. Byrne. She has looked out for me and my family since day one and I hold her in the highest regard. She has a perfect mix of integrity & Hootzpa. In a world still greatly dominated by men, she definitely holds her own in a court room. If your looking for a strong, well-spoken, dedicated and hard working attorney that is looking to do what is right, then without question Ms. Catherine Byrne is the attorney for you!

I relocated for work outside of the United States. As a result I became engaged with my unreasonable landlord in a rental dispute. I hired James to represent me in this matter. In addition, James also handled the closing on the house we purchased. I would recommend James to anyone looking to hire a lawyer for their real estate transactions in the Chicago or Chicagoland area. Regarding my rental dispute case: Most importantly, it was James' wealth of experience and grasp of current law that enabled me to achieve a positive outcome. Not one of the original unjust charges my landlord brought against me saw the light of day. I am fully aware James has a full case load and I am a small client of his; regardless, James consistently treated me as if I was his most important client. On a final note, James kept me abreast of all case information in a timely manner. Also, despite the 9 hour time difference between us, he always made himself available to discuss my case at a convenient time.

Ms. Pritz has been the most incredible attorney I have ever worked with. She is a subject matter expert in Family Law and understood the value of working closely with me (her client) to build an effective strategy that in the end, proved to be beyond what my expectations were. She is the most prepared, efficient, cost-effective attorney who not only knows her craft, but educated me as it related to my case. The money I spent with Ms. Pritz pales in comparison to the invaluable degree of satisfaction I got as we went through the case and closed the case out. It was apparent from the beginning that I was in great hands and as I stated before, I finished my case with an even deeper respect, admiration and appreciation for the best lawyer EVER! Thank you Ms. Pritz, You are the best!!!!!! Bryant Phillips

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
