David Terry was hired by my boyfriend for a criminal negligent homicide case. My boyfriend was expected to go to jail for 30 days, which was part of the plea deal made with the DA. My boyfriend ended up not having to go to jail at all. David is very intelligent, he knows the court room and law like the back of his hand. He is friendly, out going and very funny.

Eleven months ago, we found ourselves in the middle of an absolute nightmare when our son was falsely accused of a crime that he did not commit; he was the victim. David Terry walked us through every step of the legal process, he communicated extensively with us, and he advocated for our son every step of the way. We cannot say enough good things about the way that he represented our son. David was available days, nights, and weekends, and he fully supported taking a family/team approach to the case. His extensive experience, effective strategies, vast knowledge of the law, and relentless commitment to the truth, gave us the positive outcome that we desired for our son. We highly recommend David Terry to anyone who really needs someone to listen to them, and to fight for justice on their behalf. We will be forever grateful for the compassionate nature that was shown to our family by both David, and his caring staff, during one of the most challenging times of our lives; he is worth every single penny.

Mr. Hall represented my mentally ill family member with compassion and an eye for what really mattered. He was able to work with the judge to secure a ruling that ultimately pressured my loved one to start taking medication again. This has given them a second chance at a decent life. Thank you, Mr. Hall for understanding the situation and looking out for my family.

Dominic did a wonderful, comprehensive job defending us against an adverse property claim. He was also able to counter sue the plaintiff so we were able to recoup most of our legal fees etc. Very good at communicating in a way that non-attorneys could understand.

My husband and I had an appointment with Mr. Simmons to introduce ourselves and go over Estate Planning and Will (Living Trust). We found him to be very pleasant, understanding, smart and extremely helpful with our situation. He is going to draw up a draft for us to review and we will definitely work with him. We would be happy to refer his services to family and friends.

Ms. Barrett really knows her business. She was always well-prepared for court, and, unlike other lawyers I have dealt with, she didn't ignore me until the last possible minute. She was very generous with her time (didn't charge me for approximately 35% of it) and very helpful and courteous. She was always professional and kind.

Our family has been using Ms. Barrett for several years. She has always been professional, courteous, and helpful. Our case went to court and believe me, Jennifer is not timid when questioning witnesses on the stand. She won our case for us and there were several hours of work for which she didn't even bill us. She is well-educated (Ivy league), knowledgeable and hardworking. Yes, there were times when she was held over in court and had to reschedule an appointment or was a few minutes late. This is to be expected since a lawyer can't control the proceedings in court..

I have paid this woman for a civil matter and short of showing up at her front door and demanding to see her she is completely unavailable. She claims she has called or that she has sent emails and yet I have neither. I made an appointment with her to review my case and she was over 20 minutes late. I was the first case of her day. I didn't get so much as a phone call. she showed up downstairs as I was leaving and told me she could "squeeze me in real quick" I told her not to bother and walked out. Legal shield suggested her to me and I have filed a report with them as well. As far as court appearances go she can best be described as "Timid and professional" It is my belief she should stick to contract law because when she is faced with a more aggressive lawyer she just nods and moves on. Do not give this woman money and do not trust your future to her.

So disappointing! They said they couldn’t help me due to a conflict. I asked if they could tell me the nature of the conflict, and they said, “I can’t talk to you because of a conflict!!” They then hung up on me without saying another word. It had a Mean Girls “you can’t sit with us” vibe. Very un-fetch.

Hannah as a current law student doesn't have much experience under her slim belt as a litigator nor in the general practice of law itself. Despite that fact, which truly will remedy inevitably with time, she consistently displays genuine empathy for her clients and a dedication to accuracy. She is very well organized, knowing exactly where to locate items in her files, and she paid attention to detail so well that she paraphrased statements that took me literally a minute to recall I had made. As an (for lack of better terminology) attractive woman swimming in a traditionally patriarchal line of work, she seems willing to adhere to her principles of procedural perfection. Our case was resolved to the utmost of my satisfaction.

I recently purchased a consultation from Ms. Silverman concerning my trying to figure out whether or not a counselor disclosing information in an pre-commitment investigation before a trial was lawful. She told me that she did not know the answer, but would do research on the matter on the condition that I agree to pay for her research. I agreed. Later, she told me that Oregon law permits information to be disclosed to the petitioners, but not to others. I asked for citation and all she was able to cite was a body of law that stated that the counselor can share to the petitioners why a case is or is not moving forward with a court. This, however, was not applicable in my case and the question naturally arises: Is this the only body of law on this subject and if not, are we to assume that because what the counselor did was not explicitly prohibited according this body of law, does that mean that it is allowed? She said she did not know. I then asked her if she could provide citation for the other part of her claim: She stated that if a counselor shares the information with other people who are not petitioners, then it would be unlawful. Ms. Silverman stated that it would be a violation of HIPAA; I told her that the organization that the counselor works at stated in writing that it was not a violation of HIPAA (without any legal citation) and naturally, I asked her about that claim and she said she did not know. What bothered me the most during the consultation is that she seemed vexed and annoyed by my questions, stating "as I've told you three times now..". Ms. Silverman changed her answers during the consultation from definitive statements to her saying "I don't know" when she had previously claimed to know, so asking questions for clarity was only natural and of course, the same issue was going to be addressed because she changed her stance on the same subject. I had contacted a couple other attorneys on this matter and they declined because they stated that they did not know the answer and could not do justice in providing the answer. Ms. Silverman should have done the same as she simply did not have the knowledge or understanding to properly answer the question. I found her otherwise to be kind and personable, but her willingness to give answers that she later confessed she was not certain of troubled me. I can't say that I would recommend this attorney to anyone.

Worst lawyer I've ever hired. 3000 dollars spent for him to file 2 petitions. Andrew Johnson didn't even try to help my daughter and I. Had to fire him and defend myself. Won the case without him in 30 minutes. Wouldn't hire him to defend my dog at the pound.

Amazing lawyer! He has helped my family in civil matters and has never backed down to the adverse party. He knows the law and is quick on his feet when there are technical questions about a case in front of the judge... bc he knows his stuff! He won’t steer you wrong. He is up front all the way through your legal process with the good and the bad. Everyone in town knows who Andrew is and that he’s an excellent attorney. He’s actually pretty fun to joke around with. If you don’t like him it’s probably bc you were on the losing end! I’d recommend him to any family that needs a strong attorney that really knows how to argue the law.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
