I needed an attorney in 2011 for a case where I was run over by an ex boyfriend. I highly recommend Mr. Neustrom. My family contacted Mr. Neustrom while I was in the hospital (Wichita, Ks) a hour and fifteen minutes away from home and he drove to the hospital the next day to speak with me. He went above and beyond. Mr. Neustrom and the rest of the team eased my mind about the whole process. Definitely great customer service and professionalism. All my calls were answered and or returned. Honest and trustworthy. He mailed me a check after the case was settled due to the companies lack of communication for payment. Mr. Neustrom is the one I will call on. Thank you so much for everything!

My car accident was in 2010. This case was an international case because I am an international student who is from Taiwan. I studied in Salina kansas and it happened in South Dakota. He pretected my rights and explained every detials for me. I really apprecatied everything he had done for me. After I moved to Nebraska, he still help me to understand some legal questions even introduced me his office attorney to help when he was busy. Once again, he works hard and help me a lot but only for money.

When I was injured in an on-the-job accident in 1999, Pat was the attorney I chose to represent me because he was a neighbor and a personal friend, who I had known for nearly ten years. Pat helped me secure an award for the state maximum amount, as well as an agreement that obligated the work comp insurer for future, accident-related, medical expenses. I settled into an amicable relationship with the insurer that lasted for nearly 10 years, but suddenly, for reasons that I've never been able to discern, I began having trouble securing insurance approval for prescribed medicines. Additionally, the insurer demanded I consult a physician located 3 hours away because they were "concerned about the quality of care" my pain management physician was providing. I suspected their concern was more likely centered on prescription cost, rather than quality of care, but I knew I needed legal help to resolve the issue. Even though it had been nearly a decade since Pat had worked on my case, he and his staff gathered the information they needed to adequately, successfully, confront the insurance company and convince them that they would not fare well if this matter would appear before a judge. It's probably no surprise that the insurance company tried several times to make it more difficult for me to maintain the level of pain control I enjoyed prior to their "concern" for my welfare, but Pat successfully met and overcame every challenge. He also submitted the bill for his services to the insurance company, who having been unable to produce a single, successful, legal outcome, signaled total defeat by paying for my defense! I don't know how Pat's performance could possibly be improved. Pat provides advice that is reasoned and reliable. His strategies are informed by nearly 40 years of experience, which renders them particularly effective. He is practical, but he never made me feel that I was just a "client" or that my issues were just components of a "case". Pat never lost sight of me as a person, and he understood that the result of the insurance company's failure to live up to their responsibilities, was an increase in my physical pain. Pat and his excellent staff worked with an urgency that made me feel as though they were experiencing that same pain. Who could ask anything more? I give Patrik Neustrom my highest recommendation.

Mr. Prophet did a fantastic job in working with us. He took the time to get us in quickly, listen to and address our concerns, and gave knowledgeable, valuable feedback. He is a great person who cares about his client's lives and therefore provides the best advice and courses of action. He was extremely knowledgeable about the laws and how things work in the real world, which adds a high end value to his general understanding of situations and courses of action to be taken or sought. He is well worth your time for your best results.

**EDIT TO ADD: Gary did eventually refund me approximately $1500 of the $4000 paid. That doesn't fix any of the problems created by his actions or even lessen the additional costs of having to hire a different firm to fix everything and keep my son and his daughter safe and together. But I am a fair person and feel that I should be transparent about the gesture he actually did fulfill by refunding that smaller portion of my money.

If you are the respondent in a divorce case, I would suggest you not choose Russ Prophet as counsel. While I could cite many examples of his incompetency, here is just one. Income taxes showed that my ex had a substantially greater income than myself through our jointly owned business because I only claimed my social security. During 3 hours of mediation, the only thing he questioned, of me, was a charge of $29 made by her on a credit card. Not once did he challenge the mediator. Even when the mediator opined that the penalty for unpaid payroll taxes was 100%. Even though it's not. But, Russ had no clue. Even though I had previously provided him with the penalty schedule from the Internal Revenue Code, he just sat there like a deer caught in headlights. After mediation I posed the question: "Why didn't I get spousal support?" His reply: "you didn't ask for it." Maybe he should have engaged me in that question rather than a $29 credit card charge.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
