Valencia is the best attorney I've worked with in the last two decades. She is friendly, caring, and approachable. Her team does detailed work, allowing us to focus on our lives and not have to review everything. I highly recommend her for any family based immigration matters.

This company literally saved my life. I had a major immigration case, and they took care of me, quickly, most professionally and I got the best results. One more important thing - they were very fare with the cost. I can’t thank them enough. If you need an immigration layer - this is exactly what you are looking for .

Ever heard the expression, you get what you pay for? As far as most attorneys, I haven’t found that to be true. Often they promise you the moon, charge too much to get there, and sometimes they don’t even get you off the ground. Richard Avila is not one of these types of attorneys. He is excellent. Mr. Avila is straight forward, well read, and an excellent relevant, storyteller. Best of all, he is genuine and actually cares about you and your needs. He knows the law, always staying current. Plus he possesses both emotional intelligence and book smarts and is a 'pay it forward', 'give 52 and get 48' kind of guy. I have gone to him for my bankruptcy, and other issues I have had in the last ten years. His expertise is in Bankruptcy and Real Estate, but his general knowledge of all facets of the law exceeds any attorney I have ever dealt with. And he has taught me a lot about the law and life. Each time I went to him (even if just for advice) he has delivered, and my 2008 bankruptcy was quite involved. His recommendations to resolve what ails you, is spot on, and IT WORKS. He takes his time, listens, and cares, and give clear, concise examples of similar cases he is familiar with. Then he discusses your options and lets you make the determination of how he should proceed. All of this, is not common amongst the Harvard Grads, I wouldn’t think. With Richard, You GET what you pay for, every time, on every issue. And you will never be misled. Richard Avila is a man you can trust. This Guy Rocks, plain and simple!

I was referred to Randy Troxel by another attorney, when I was attempting to trademark my company name (my own name). My first name just happened to be in use by a clothing manufacturing "giant", who opposed my application for my trademark. Even though the odds were stacked against us, Randy took this case on with the expectation of winning and that he did! The "giant" withdrew their opposition to my application and I was granted my trademark!!! Mr. Troxel kept me up to speed on what was happening each step of the way (in layman's terms). There were no hidden or unexpected costs. Based on my positive experience with Mr. Troxel and my trust in his abilities (not just because he won my case, but also due to his integrity, professionalism, fairness, etc.), I have decided to use his services in the future to resolve other business-related (trademark and patent ) issues. I was very impressed and satisfied with how Mr. Troxel handled my case and would strongly recommend him to anyone seeking patent and/or trademark/copyright legal services.

My husband and I retained Daniel to assist us with a breach of contract matter. He was very caring and respectful, but aggressive with the opposing party's attorney when necessary. He handled the case professionally and got us an excellent settlement. We highly recommend Daniel.

David Butler was extremely professional and thoughtful as he not only handled my expungement case, but also went the extra mile when he determined that additional measures to seal / destroy the record might be appropriate to my specific situation. His work is thorough and detail-focused, which must contribute to his successful results. I’m grateful to David Butler and highly recommend him to anybody in the SF Penninsula and greater Bay Area.

Mr. Gilg is knowledgeable and dedicated to his work. He handled three different matters for me. I gave him a retainer and he refunded half, and indicated he was able to get the job done more rapidly than he expected. Hence, honesty. Also, we won on a technicality he discovered. I was quite pleased.

I've known Bill for many years and his work was always very good on both sides of the Real Estate Legal issue. He is a great choice for a landlord who has a squatter or difficult tenant - he can help you right away. Due to his knowledge and great experience in this field he is a strong advocate and a wonderful choice to help you if you have a problem with your landlord or are even being evicted. I have referred Bill numerous times and everyone has been very happy with him! He is very fair in his rates and again, HE KNOWS HIS BUSINESS VERY WELL! I recommend him highly for your Eviction Process Real Estate needs.

His advice served us well when taking on a woman attempting to defraud us out of 10k. I really appreciated Simon actually answering questions like how much would this cost in superior court? then gave me a reasonable stratagy to take to court. Mr mazzola actually answered the question for me, the other lawyers just blew my questions off assuming I didnt have the money or I saw there eyes light up with all sorts of things to accuse, like they won the lottery over my relatively small suit because we have an axe to grind and money to do it. I will use his services again if ever the need arises

I had a debt which she filed for Asset Acceptance. I paid the debt and Accept Acceptance hired Mrs. Gordon to file the satisfaction of judgment. I instructed Mrs. Gordon and her staff that in Orange County you must Efile that document not simply mail this document. I am currently in the middle of closing escrow on my home and I cannot do so and will possibly lose my escrow deposit due to the lack of response from Attorney Amy Louise Gordon and her staff Tom Perry.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
