Suzana did an amazing job dealing with my overbearing ex-husband who is an executive at a major lumber company and is accustomed to being in charge. He and his lawyer put non stop pressure on me to settle the case without a trial. Suzana encourgaed me to keep fighting for the support I was entitled to and after a full day in court we walked with nearly double what they offered and what my ex assured me numerous times was "much more than I would get in court." Throughout the process she was confident and encouraging and just all around wonderful. Thank you Suzana.

I highly recommend Ms. Malek. She guided me through a spousal support case and did so efficiently and competently. She was rather direct with me about my options and the likely outcome. I appreciated her candor and her ability to quickly resolve the issues.

Jeremy Featherstone and his family law practice can be summed up in a single word: HERO. The machine process of law can be a very slow and drawn out agony (unfortunately most reading this are nodding their head). So I want to offer you some hope. Prior to hiring Jeremy, I had another attorney. Sadly they were simply not getting it done and then someone recommended that I talk to Jeremy Featherstone. What could have stretched out for ANOTHER year or more in choosing to hire new council, Mr. Featherstone wrapped up my in 6 months! I might have paid for a lawyer but what I got was a friend who cared about me and my case. He kept me out of jail; gave me my life back; even got me to-and-from airport to make sure I was in court on time. THAT IS DELIVERING ON A PROMISE. Thank you Jeremy. -eastcoaster, 2016

Jeremy was my attorney for a custody case as well as a DUI case. I was extremely please with the results of both cases. The outcome of the custody case was even better than expected. I would highly recommend Jeremy to anyone seeking out an attorney.

Going through a divorce is hard enough. Going into mediation, I was completely nervous. Fonda was as nice as can be, did her job professionally, didn't let emotions get in the way of anything, and explained anything that was asked.

I've had the pleasure of working with Scott off and on for many years, he's an excellent and meticulous attorney and someone I feel is good at explaining legal material in understandable terms. Additionally I am a 38yr IT professional / network security officer and I feel he has uniquely skillful grasp of how law interacts with and is applied to new technologies.

Wendy was excellent. I wouldn't have prevailed without her. There is still another issue on my journey in dealing with the discrimination against by my employer that I am attempting to resolve on my own. If I am unsuccessful in my attempt to resolve this on my own then I intend to re-hire Wendy for her further assistance. Her office is extremely busy, so patience with her schedule is necessary, but well worth the time.

Ms. Earle has demonstrated her excellent skills both inside and out of the courtroom. Her communication skills have been excellent. She answers every question, and remarkably, often states the exact code or statute applicable in support of her answer. She is absolutely focused on the tasks at hand. As a type A personality myself, I can assure you of the thorough, exacting, accurate, error-free, complete, and timely work products she provides. At the same time, while she is very personable, there is no "wasting" of time to "pad" the billing and charge more in fees. I have never felt any of the fees charged have been unreasonable or exaggerated in any way. Before hiring Ms. Earle, and with an awareness she has a litigation practice, we questioned Ms. Earle about her experience. We were amazed at the amount and variety of cases as well as the levels of courts she has had very successful experiences with. Wendy replaced an attorney who did incredible damage to our interests. I didn't realize the true extent of the damage until hiring a thoroughly competent attorney, Wendy Earle. Our unfortunate situation would have been entirely different had Ms. Earle handled the issues in the first place. Lesson well learned but at a severe cost both financially and emotionally as the other attorney was well paid for her incompetence. It is without any hesitation or reservation that we absolutely recommend the hiring of Wendy Earle, Esquire to handle your needs.

Wendy, Was professional and thorough in advising me on legal matters. She helped me understand the law based on the context of my unique situation and offered multiple legal perspectives where I could then come to my own decision. She also provided empathy and understood that legal matters are messy and that sometimes clients just need to be listened to. She answered all my questions and returned phone calls in a timeline manner. I hired her smaller office because I like professionals that provide individualized attention to complex matters instead of outsourcing staff to do their work for them. I was pleased with the case outcome, so much so that I would hire this attorney again.

I can't speak to the law skills of this firm, but the woman who answers the phones should take a sabbatical. I called about a situation involving my father's death and property he owned (trying to transfer ownership) and she wouldn't even let me speak before interrupting and telling me what I had to do. While she might have been right with her advice for one situation, she literally wouldn't let me speak about other things I wanted to ask about and she continually interrupted me (even after I said "hey, you keep interrupting me and I'd really like to explain a few other things" and then she interrupted again and would not let me speak!) Pretty horrible and rude experience on the phone to the point that I simply hung up because she would not let me speak. Super unprofessional experience and not someone you want answering your phones for first time clients. I had multiple things I wanted to ask about and would have brought business to this firm, instead I hung up feeling like the world is a crazy place and the woman here is obviously in great need of a long vacation and some meditation. To the woman on the phone: I truly wish you peace in your life. You are not well. Seek help.

Rude and unhelpful, wouldn’t call them back if they were the last place in town. I called to see if they could help and before I’m even done asking my question she interrupted me to tell me to “go with another lawyer (that I’m working with on an unrelated issue) because that’s who I need to work with and why am I not contacting them” I didn’t contact them for a reason but apparently you aren’t interested in my business.

If you have Todd Reed you are in good hands! I had a very complicated divorce in 2009. He was very tough on my ex. Brought out all of his lies, narcissistic and abusive ways!! Todd is very wise and knowledgeable! Handles things in an expert way. He stuck up for me the whole way through. Easy to talk too. Because of Todd and his expert ways, the judge awarded me full custody of my kids!

I was going through a pretty bad divorce. I hired Todd Reed. I should have hired a rock. He literally laid down and gave her what she wanted, lying to me and telling me that she won’t take my kids. And he literally handed then to her. I honestly don’t know who’s side he was on. I was paying him. It should have been mine. My ex wife was the biggest mistake I ever made. Todd Reed was the 2nd.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
