Joanne was amazing in helping me through one of the roughest times you’ll ever hope to go through. It’s a difficult balance of upheaval and tough reality. Joanne helped me navigate it as best as one could hope for. She’s tough, yet kind. She’s very good at what she does.

I can give no higher recommendation. I found myself in a difficult divorce case at long distance (Texas-California) and numerous complicating personal and financial issues. Honestly, it was overwhelming but Joann was a rock with a personal touch. She was always available for questions despite time differences. Always worked with me to craft the outcome I wanted to have happen, guiding me as to consequneces and possible responses. She went above and beyond with counseling and calming when things seemed most overwhelming. Explaining how I and my kids would come through this time of difficulty not just legally but personally. She gave me the perspective to both legally find the best outcome but personally feel empowered in the system. Joann was both a strong advocate and a generous counselor. She truly cares about her clients. I will always be grateful to Joann for being there when we needed her most, she is simply the best.

I had a child custody case that I consulted with Ms. Babiak about. She listened attentively while we discussed my story, then explained all my options and the potential ramifications. Her fees were quite reasonable and she spent some extra time with me that she didn't even bill for. I have not (as yet) needed to litigate my case, but I can tell she will be an excellent advocate should I ever need to.

Tom's understanding of the law along with his business sense , obviously ,garnered from years of resolving situations created an outcome that was elegant and fast. The explanation Tom provided , concerning the legal part allowed me the basis to use what he suggested as a course of action to resolve a difficult situation, where the client would have normally bulldozed to get an outcome that legally was not right but would force the supplier into giving what she wanted if supplier and middle person wanted to maintain her business. The supplier had made an error and the client wanted to take advantage of error without any concern for supplier. Tom allowed for a win for all three parties that I would not have gotten to without consulting him . Tom explained under the law the supplier could rescind the transaction, due to the circumstances of the mistake, and the client would not get something that was a one off item irreplaceable for less money than she would pay if she had chosen that item and the middle man myself, who had invested money into enhancing the item would also be out funds if the transaction did not complete and the supplier would loose the sale. This was all over in 24 hours after consulting Tom where I had wrestled with it for weeks . That is why I have given excellent on every level. I wish I had consulted him sooner. The business is precious gems and anyone who deals with the public will understand what I went through when the old adage is "client is always right " and "you had a mix up in inventory- that is your problem" . It was a significant error, of thousands where an employee had mixed an expensive stone for a very inexpensive stone and sold the expensive stone at a very low price. Tom explained who had the item was so important and why. He informed me as to what I could do and suggested he would check the law and rang me back in a very timely manner. His response time , knowledge and offer to confirm, and keeping me informed earned my trust as the situation was so easily resolved with a client who is so difficult I was stunned.

Excellent communicator, extraordinary researcher, prepares and writes excellent briefs, and confident negotiator. In a business career, unfortunately, you need an attorney's advice as a matter of good business practice. Gail has exceeded every expectation with respect to every matter she has handled for my firm. She is made of snakes and snails and puppy dog tails; In other words, she is stronger than any male attorney I have ever hired!

I was interested in the California Parentage Opportunity Program (POP), but I was worried about the possibility of retroactive child-support claims. He was able to convince me that my fears were about matters too many decades back to be of interest to anyone. Because of his experience as a Settlement Master and private Judge in family law, I am confident that he has a balanced view and understanding of the priorities, motivating factors and likely actions of the relevant agencies. He clarified this matter in one consultation, and didn't even charge me for it! If any further issues of family law or real estate law arise, I will make a beeline heading to this website.

Sam is an excellent attorney. He knows the law and wants more he also understands the law, which is a quality that all attorneys strive to find. He is straight forward and tells his clients what he thinks and what he recommends. If you have a State Bar issue, you want to have Sam on your side. His fees are extremely reasonable. He cares about his clients and works very hard for his clients. I highly recommend Sam.

The State Bar is no joke. If you have a matter before the Bar you want Sam Bellicini in your corner. Mr. Bellicini fights for his clients and gets the job done. He also has a great rapport with the judges. Throughout the proceedings Mr. Bellicini maintained communication and answered all of my questions. I highly recommend him.

I disagree with Allison Young. I am assuming (though I don't know for sure) that Ms. Young is an attorney because Sam works with attorneys. Attorneys know that results in court can't be guaranteed and just because we don't win, that doesn't say anything about us as professionals or the quality of our work. I am an attorney since 2006 and I am practicing family law, which has its ups and downs. We often run across problem people and knowing how to handle them is a practice area on its own, I think. I have known Sam for 6 years now and I can say only good things about him. He is very direct, that's true, and that's what I most appreciate. Sam is not about charging his clients as much as possible. Sam provided me consultations countless times without charging me a dime. Each time his advice is spot on. Sam also made himself available to me after business hours, which he didn't have to do. That means a lot. When hiring a professional, like a lawyer, do your research. Don't judge by one person who may not have gotten what she wanted. That's life. I am glad to recommend Sam as an honest and trustworthy lawyer and person.

I presented my toxic mold/habitability story to Cheryl Bossio two years ago. She was enthusiastic to take on the case and have me hire her to prosecute the landlords of a house I rented in Marin County who violated habitability and safety laws. After no activity for a year and a half, she finally started the process of helping myself and my young son who became very sick while living in this house. We seemed to develop communication obstacles as she would tell me things for the first time and claim that I already knew about them. False. When Ms. Bossio took the case, she discussed compensation amounts with me. I trusted that these were ballpark until she understood more about the case. However, when, one day before my deposition, she told me that we could hope for one tenth of the amount, I asked why such a departure from the original claim. She sent me an email stating that I caused a communication problem and that she was abandoning my case. She told me that she would cancel upcoming dates with the court, yet I was later told by the Marin County courthouse that I was a "no-show" for my hearings and the case was dismissed. My little boy and I suffered through Hell and she promised to "be my partner in this," and reassured me, "that I was no longer alone in this fight." She mentioned how she fights for injustice and for victims like myself, but when I asked about the settlement offer to get our lives back on track, she emailed me telling me she was out. I was not able to find another attorney in the short time I was given to continue my case, and with the "no-shows" I received from the court, my case is no longer viable. My health will continue to suffer as will my son's. We lost everything, all clothing, housing, furniture and wellbeing. Cheryl make this already devastating situation much much worse. Please protect yourself and find a reliable lawyer who will be forthcoming, honest and stand behind their position to do the right thing and fight for those hurt by environmental injustice at the hands of others. I have been deeply hurt by her and I would never want this to happen to anyone else.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
