Jonathan Bowne came through – after contacting numerous attorneys he was among the few that responded to our representation request – most said they did not do contract litigation but Jonathan did and indeed he did – he responded immediately and after our initial phone conversation (by the way we never did actually meet in person) he laid out a excellent strategy – being an “old school” type of individual that was quite unusual for me to continue with someone “sight unseen” ! No matter since within days he was able to settle out of court for us with only the agreed upon original invoice as our only and final payment – the litigant tried to sue for work not performed (which was only one reason not to continue with him) – the only monies really out were the attorney fees and legal filings - no one wants that but we had to defend ourselves or lose much more – even though this case should never had happen in the first place we were so glad to have it behind us – in other words “WE WON”! If you ever need a knowledgeable business and / or construction attorney who will respond promptly to your communications in a friendly manner you should call the Law Office of Jonathan M. Bowne of Sonoma County!

Bob Haroche, is, in short, an exceptional attorney- he is brilliant, thoughtful, conscientious, exceedingly mindful of a client's budget, tactful (but snarky when necessary), highly effective, and an absolute pleasure to work with. Bob has an uncanny ability to assess the most effective course of action in a litigation, and wastes no time honing a strategy for a swift resolution. We have worked with Bob on numerous occasions- he has never failed to resolve our issues positively, effectively, and rapidly. We are fortunate to have such a talented attorney in our area- I refer Bob to all my clients (all of whom walk away impressed), and always look forward to an opportunity to work with him. Working with Bob Haroche is like watching a master at his craft- like playing one-on-one with Michael Jordan- he is, simply, The Best.

Liberty For You is what the license plate on his Prius reads, and I believe it's his motivating factor above all others. Don is a generous and intelligent man, with whom I put my faith in, and was extremely pleased with the outcome. Don is intelligent and respectfull, two qualities I think are very important for a good attorney. I highly recommend him.

We are forever indebted to Don. He brought an expert witness(retired CHP) who was outstanding as well ! He filed a motion for suppression of evidence as my fiancé was pulled over for a vehicle violation for failure to use his blinker. He was able to prove that this was an unlawful pull over and arrest as the officer was profiling. He got the officer to admit this on the stand !!! All charges were dropped as the evidence had to be thrown out. He was caught with 8 lbs of marijuana and got off scott free. He was facing atleast 1 yr in jail and up to 5 yrs. If you are in need of criminal defense lawyer he is your man.

Mr. Jacobs assisted me with handling my mother's estate when she passed away earlier this year, then prepared a Living Trust and associated estate planning documents for my husband and me. Throughout the whole process I was very impressed with Mr. Jacobs' ability to explain complex legal issues in plain english. He seemed to really know his stuff, and took the time to be sure we understood everything as clearly as possible (even though we were paying him a flat fee, not hourly billing). I also really liked the fact that he runs a small, relaxed office, and often answers his own phone. Try to get that at a big law firm! In short, Ken Jacobs is not your typical lawyer, and I highly recommend him to anyone who needs a Living Trust or Will, or to handle an Estate.

Mary Lu Hilberg took my writ of habeas case accusing another attorney by the name of Monte Hanson of . Negligent representation. This is very brave and noble to do within the attorney ranks. As it is very true that the attorneys like to look out for one another. Even when neglect or plain bad representation is written all over the wall. It seems like yesterday, but I guess it was quite a long time ago 23 years. It was 1991 when I chose Monty Hanson to represent me as a private attorney in the Sonoma County courts. I was 29 years old and I had a bit of drugs and an unloaded gun . Monte Hanson got me 14 plea bargained to 9 years, got out in 5. First time in prison. I got out in 97 got married and have been working steady ever since. Mary Lou Hillburn reviewed the case and found a slew of mistakes. Therefore she found it reasonable to challenge the misrepresentation. She fought the case for years on appeal. We did not win but I have the most dedication and appreciation to Mary Lou Hill Berg's demeanor and stubborn stances to do the right thing . This is an attorney that will not lie to you and will go to bat for the best outcome that she's able to get.good luck in your battles

My faith in the California judicial system and my absolute belief in the integrity of law enforcement was shattered 6/2010 when I was arrested for delivering cannabis to medically qualified patients. I followed California state law, paid taxes, and was very up front with local politicians. None of that mattered. Solano county said "No medical marijuana here, we don't care what California state law is.". True to their word I was arrested, my husband was arrested and we came home from dinner surrounded by guys in bullet proof vests. NEVER had I been in any trouble before (I was 50 yrs old at time) and I was TERRIFIED! After much research and after speaking to a number of attorneys I decided to trust Omar and it was definitely the best decision! His education, knowledge and experience is outstanding. It took a few years to get through this mess and he was with me the whole time. Anyone who is knowlegeable of Solano County's position on MMJ, and especially in Vacaville, knows this was a very difficult battle. Thanks Omar! Hire him, you will be very glad you did!

I was arrested in Sausalito CA for possession of 167 pounds of cannabis and 3 ½ grams of ecstasy. I thought my life was over and I was preparing myself for jail. I researched a dozen lawyers, interviewed three and then I found Omar. Within minutes of our first meeting I felt there might be some hope and I knew he was the person I needed to work with. He was professional, very smart and easy to talk to. After we started working together I also realized he has integrity and is highly respected among his peers. Omar coached me through every part of the process. I never had any uncertainty going into court. His office support staff is thorough and outstanding. After an eight month process I was awarded three years felony probation with a good chance after probation the felony will be reduced so it doesn't show on my record. Yes, no jail time, just probation! It even gets better. During sentencing Omar argued that I still be allowed to drink alcohol and use medical cannabis while on probation and the judge agreed. My probation officer told me he has never seen anyone on probation allowed these privileges. The only mistake you can make hiring Omar is not listing to his coaching. I am one GRATEFUL client.

When I learned about my arrest warrant in Lake County I was overwhelmed to say the least. Throughout the process Maddie and Omar were incredibly helpful in dealing with the stress and providing answers to questions I knew little to nothing about. I knew if Omar's assistant was more caring and thorough than the other lawyers I had spoken with that I would be in good hands. Fortunately I listened to my intuition and sought his counsel. Today in court we reached an agreement with the prosecution that was more than desirable, especially when considering the charges against me. I am incredibly grateful for all of Omar's help and expertise, not to mention experience. If you need a great great lawyer I would highly recommend Omar without a doubt. Justin Latragna

My Opinion is that this is a Terrible Lawyer, If you want a guy that charges top dollar for being the bottom of the barrel Lawyer, then by all means hire this guy... his favorite line is "your behind the 8-ball on this"... He couldn't keep basic information about the case straight, didn't show up on time. We had to fire him and hire another lawyer mid way through the case... had we listened to him, we would be serving prison sentences...

Her encouragement and support have allowed me to achieve an independence that I never thought would be possible. She has given me a new outlook on life where the possibilities are limitless. Ms. Schilling is very nice in person but denied repeatedly that she had issues with her phone. There is no way to email her either. I was referred to her by the Lawyer Referral Service and California Rural Legal Aid. I have a long-term disability, which forced me to not be able to afford other attorneys. I called her again and again before seeing her and her phone kept ringing and not going to voicemail. Finally, after telling the Lawyer Referral service, Ms. Schilling called and set up an appointment to meet at her office. She showed me files from other clients that she was currently helping that looked over three feet wide. I paid her $250 and she asked for a few additional documents for me to get and drop off at her home. I was then able to leave her a voice message reminding her that I dropped off the papers and asked her to call. I called her four days later and her phone would either beep once and go silent or beep three times and disconnect. I again alerted the Lawyer Referral Service and tried calling several times before her phone actually worked and went to voice-mail. I left her a message telling her that I paid her $250, which for me is a lot and deserve to be updated about my case. She called back and sounded annoyed, essentially saying I need to be patient. When I finally connected, I asked for my money back and mentioned how my court hearing wasn't far away and that she should fix her phone issues. She again denied there has been an issue, claiming At&t fixed the issue. Due to limitations imposed by my disability, including financial limitations, I will probably lose custody of my son to a mom who is very unstable. The Lawyer Referral Service absolutely did nothing after repeated pleas to find me another low cost attorney. Lawyers should never be allowed to operate like Ms. Schilling does and if a potential client endures such an experience, the referral service should do whatever they can to help, rather than destroy families and relationships. I have now visited the Superior Court self-help center three times and the last young clerk was lecturing me about how I should have already filed my court papers. She treated me like I was an irresponsible child, even though she was young enough to be my granddaughter. She had no idea how I had done my due diligence in getting assistance, and thanks to Ms. Schilling and the Lawyer Referral Service, will most likely get further chastised by the judge. Shameful :(

Linda was the attorney my management company always used for evictions. However, we changed attorneys after we sent a file to her to begin the process of having tenants vacate for repeated behavioral lease violations that were gang related and threatening and she sat on the file, "reviewing" it for over 6 weeks. Only after there was a gang related shooting on-site did Linda actual draft any notices. We stopped using her after that. Prior to the this incident, she would only pursue non-financial evictions when pushed. Failure to pay rent is usually a slam dunk win for the owner while behavioral issues can be difficult to win, especially in Sonoma County, and Linda consistently sent those files back to management for "more documentation." My impression was that Linda's primary concern was her win/loss record and not representing her client's wishes.

I had a very poor experience with an eviction case and I would not recommend Linda Ryan for any legal work. She did not communicate progress or make any attempt to update me on the status of my case. She instructed me to meet her 15 minutes before the start of court so that she could prep me for the case and then did not arrive until after court was in session. She gave no explanation or apology for her tardiness. I waited outside the court room with another couple of her clients who claimed that they had a similar experience with Linda. She does not use email which proved to be very inconvenient. Based on my experience I will never use her services again.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
