Steve advised us regarding a neighborhood property use dispute. He is very experienced in these matters and laid out in plain language the options he saw for us. Litigation, as one option, was explained along with the steps, likely financial costs, time frame, and likely conclusion. We decided to not litigate, are very happy with that decision, and it was Steve's professional guidance that made it clear what path to follow. We will call Steve first, the next time we need an attorney.

I was involved in an extremely contentious business lawsuit. Steve was referred to me by my personal attorney due to a conflict of interest. I was under an extreme time constraint to obtain representation. Steve stepped up with little time or preparation and definitely lived up to the reputation he was reported to have. In the end we prevailed and he made the opposing attorney look like a mere amateur. I could not give him a higher recommendation to anyone seeking an experienced litigation attorney!

Mr. Steven H Schwartz was referred to us as someone that could help us with the following case. My wife was involved in an accident that happened January 21, 2019 in which she almost lost her life-she was hit by a drunk driver exceeding eighty miles an hour in the rear end of the car she was driving. Without going into the details of every aspect of this, I would say, we needed the best of legal help we could find, and that's what happened. We contacted Mr. Schwartz and hired him to represent us in any legal matter that would come about as a result of this accident. I am writing this review as of December 27, 2019 - Mr. Schwartz has to this point in time shown us that he is positive, thorough, compassionate, knowledgeable, trustworthy, diligent, intelligent, confident, resourceful, punctual, does what he says he will do, explores every avenue, flexible, highly ethical, and is dedicated to provide the best legal service to our case. Although, this case has not come to an end after eleven months, the end is near, and we can say what a privilege it has been to have had Mr. Schwartz work and represent us. We could not have asked for more. Thanks!

Paul Tutnick is one of the most wonderful and knowledgeable attorneys who I have known for over 25 years. He helped me with my divorce that really got crazy for a short period of time. He was informative and always kept me updated on what I could expect. My questions and suggestions were always taken care of in a very short period of time. I have recommended Mr. Tutnick to a member of my family; she was really pleased with the outcome.

Mr. Tutnick listened to my issues, and helped me resolve them. He explained estates and wills to me Including powers of attorney, so that I could make informed decisions. He was quick to respond to my phone calls, and could squeeze me in for an appointment, if needed. He also did an LLC for me, and has filed law suits for me resulting in favorable settlements. I would recommend him to anyone, because He is informative, quick to respond, and also will go to court for you.

Dana has been terrific in helping our small group prepare our Articles of Incorporation and 501(c)3 request. She has been very patient with our questions. She answered not just what we asked, but also posed questions to make us think deeper about why we were asking. In addition, Dana was able to explain things to us in a way that we understood. Her knowledge and guidance has been instrumental in making our first year a success. I highly recommend Dana for your business legal needs.

From the day I met Steve & Anita their professionalism and compassion towards me and what I've been through was absolutely a blessing. Their entire team worked tirelessly from beginning to end and never once made me feel like I made a wrong choice. I know that I truly had the best powerhouse attorneys one could ever have, taking on such a battle. To Steve, Anita and their entire staff I thank you all for your professionalism, the gift of getting my life back, and most of all the friendships I will cherish forever with each and every one of you.

They know the law well, but they will work to get you a small settlement to pursue other, more lucrative cases. They really won't pursue things to the end. I was told they had extreme knowledge of my insurance company yet they hired 4 experts to research the company on basic things. The attorneys & experts got paid and I got next to nothing.

I was referred to Sandra Gardner by another attorney as I needed someone to handle my interest as a beneficiary of my mother's trust. She was nice, quoted me a fee and told me she would send out a contract to sign and a copy of the demand letter and for me to email her all the contact information, which I did. It was the holiday weekend so I gave her a week to get back to me. After emailing her and going through the website, she finally emailed back and said she was sick, but if I still wanted to use her services, she would draw up the letter and have it for me the next morning. She never sent anything nor answered my email letting her know that I did not receive anything. If she didn't want to handle my case, she should have told me. I did contact the original law firm that referred her and let them know that it's reflects poorly on their law firm referring people who are flakes.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
