I am a retired military veteran. I met Jessica Martin over 4 years ago and asked her for representation concerning my divorce. I forewarned her this was not going to be so easy, given the fact that it was a 26.5-year military marriage. To my surprise, she is a military spouse. During the entire process, Jessica was vigilantly engaged. I cannot speak highly enough concerning her outstanding work ethic, communication skills, professionalism, loyalty, and flexibility to shift gears at a moment's notice. She always exceeded my expectations. Jessica has always gone beyond regarding my incredibly involved divorce situation. She and I during the last four plus years have built an outstanding business relationship. Open two-way communication concerning any job is key. Jessica completely understands the power of this and has placed this tradition at the top of her establishment. It was an exceedingly difficult, trying, an emotional 3 1/2-year challenge. At the end of the day, we won. I highly recommend Anchor Family Law Firm, and encourage anyone that hires them, let them do their job. Keep the communication lines open and do your best to work harmoniously together. An example of her exceptional work ethic and friendship. Well after my divorce was final, property of mine for sale via consignment sold. However, once the owner of the company found out I moved out of that state, he would not mail me the check from the sale. I called and spoke with him six times, each time he made excuses. I called Jessica and explained the situation. I personally did not believe given the situation I was ever going to receive my money. To my surprise, one month later, a check with the entire amount was in my mailbox. I cannot overemphasize how professional, friendly, encouraging, and positive she is. Due to everything she and I experienced, along with belonging to the military, Jessica truly has become family to me.

I hired this guy for a divorce that was a very short marriage where I was cheated on by my ex wife and she was trying to take stuff from me that she was not entitled to. Kurt Hayes promised me the world and acted like my best friend before he got paid. After being paid in full he became lazy (and also somewhat beforehand). His communication skills lack incredibly. Towards the tail end of the divorce we were supposed to meet with the other party and her attorney before the court date to tweak the agreement and visitation because my ex wife was having my son around drug addicts and derelicts and whenever I would bring this up to Mr. Hayes he would tell me that I was not listening to him and would result in him on more than one occasion telling me that he was going to withdraw from the case. This ALL after getting paid almost 7 thousand dollars. The day of court he filed a motion to withdraw, I objected and the judge was nice enough to tell us to go in the conference room just me and him to try to talk and when we went into the conference room, Mr. Hayes became irate and would not let me speak a word. He walked out of the room like a child and filed his motion to withdraw because he got his money. This guy is a real blowhard twerp and I wouldn’t recommend him to my worst enemy. He also has been found guilty in Massachusetts of similar activity. Beware of Richard Showkier. He unfortunately represents me in probate court. He never consults with you before court or after. He represented me in the custody of my four children. He could never even remember their names. It takes him weeks to return phone calls and gives you short shrift when you do reach him. He is always too busy. He either tells you he is headed into court or has to take another phone call. He told me he researched everything he could about parent alienation but never brought it up in court.? He had no strategy at all. He never prepared me for what my role in court would be. I was cross examined by two attorneys my husband could pay for. I do not have the financial means to hire a private attorney so I got stuck with him, a court appointed lawyer. They get paid so poorly that they have to carry a much larger caseload than a private attorney who makes more money. This means Richard has no time or motivation to research and fight for you in court. He has ruined any chance of my ever seeing my kids again. My abusive ex husband was made to look like father of the year. We had Zoom court snd when they zoomed in on Showkier he was half asleep. My own objections to being badgered on the stand woke him up. Court was months ago snd I still have never heard from Showkier. I guess I will get a letter in the mail from the court? Who knows? I can be sure I will never find out from him. You have a better chance of winning the lottery than ever receiving communicationfrom him. My advice to all the other poor people he represents is to request the court give reassign you a new court ordered attorney. He has the power to ruin your life with his lazy apathetic attitude towards the custody of your children. I am writing this review to hopefully save others the pain and Devastation he has caused me and my children. At the very least, do not feel like you are alone in getting a bad attorney. Get away from him if you have the means!!!

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
