I walked into the Elder Law office knowing exactly what I wanted. Boy was I wrong. When it comes to law, you don't know what you don't know. Turns out, I needed so much more information and helps to set up my life care needs, not just my death wishes. I learned so much but the staff is so helpful. Breaking it down into bite-sized pieces and making sure I understood every little jot and tittle before any signature hit paper. If you don't know what you don't know, listen closely to Helayne. Do your homework exactly as she tells you to do it. Write down the instructions. It's too important to rely on your memory. Most important, if you don't understand, ask. Ask, ask, ask. Till all is explained to you. So glad someone recommended Elder Law to me and honored to pass on the recommendation. Thank you Helayne, Susan and Amy.

When we moved from out of state, we needed to have our trust, will, power of attorney, and advanced directives updated. Helayne Levy Payne we highly recommended by others in our community. Helayne and her team were efficient, supportive, and compassionate in helping us through the process that resulted in a comprehensive plan for the future. Helayne's approach was both instructive and thorough. Her unique talent to listen and create made us confident that our final documents incorporated our family values and needs. The final meeting with our children and potential supportive individuals, was a bonus. End-of-life discussions are challenging but this meeting, and our final products has provided peace of mind that our products will meet our needs and the needs of our family in the future.

I was told about Sandra Watts by some friends who had used her as their lawyer and were very pleased with her. I am Latino and was very nervous about going to a lawyer, but I needed help with my dads estate. Ms. watts gave me great legal advice and council. I am thankful that I went to her to help me with my Dads estate planning. I don't know what would have happened to dads estate if not for her representing me. She was very understanding and caring.

Recently, Attorney Causey made a home visit to assist my 91 year old Uncle with updating his estate planning. He was very knowledgeable, efficient, and extremely compassionate to ensuring his needs were being met. His attentiveness to details were by far extraordinary and appreciated. My Uncle kept saying how satisfied he was with his knowledge, efficiency, and his politeness. I would highly recommend him.

As a member of the Brunswick County Board of Education we had to do a search and hire for the School Board lawyer in the mid 90's. Joseph Causey was our #1 choice and we did negotiate a contract with him. I had the pleasure of working with him for almost 3 terms, a total of 8 years. He was excellent in all areas of school law . So glad we hired him as he was very professional, knowledgeable, and could guide the board without any difficulty. He was able to work well with a diverse group of people at all tiimes. Since I left the Brusnwick School Board I have had the opportunity to hire Joseph Causey for a very personal situation. He handled the litigation extremely well. His guidance through the litigation was invaluable. Joseph Causey is without the most hnorable and honest person I knwo.

I would recommend Mr. Parrotte to anyone that need help in the legal system. He treated me with dignity and respect. He explained all my options and never made me feel that I should take any plea that I didn't think I should. I never waiver in my innocence and he stuck with me. I was honest with him and he helped me to the very end. Thankful to have had such a highly professional representative.

I hired Mr. Richard (Rick) Parrotte in June 2016 after spending fifteen months with another lawyer who was unable to move the case to closure. Within four months of taking my case, Rich was able to close the case with a settlement that could have been completed one year earlier. Rick was forthright, reasonable in cost, answered all my questions, provided clear feedback, direction and was able to take a floundering case and move it to closure within a very short period of time of four months. I wish my first lawyer had the integrity that Rick presented to me. He kept me informed, did not mislead me, made sure I understood what he was doing, why he was doing it, and explained any options that I need to make. Rick was a pleasure to work with and I highly recommend using him by those of us needing a guide through the maze of our legal system. I would hire Rick again.

If you need solid representation, Wayne J. Payne is the man! I am going to hire him to help my daughter. I visited her in jail today. Epic! Happy and sad. Mostly happy, she's amazing! A man walks into a restaurant and calls me by name. I'm the bartender. He knows my first name without introduction and I know his full name. Men like us need no introduction. Wayne J. Payne (the J. is silent) is one of the most intelligent and respectful man I've had the privilege of meeting. He's hired!

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
