I have known Sean for several years and I have always been impressed with his professionalism and calm way of approaching solutions. Recently I needed his legal expertise in dealing with a complex property rights issue - an unrecorded easement for the neighbors septic drain field that was some how located with in feet of my front door. Sean carefully worked out a solution with the neighbors (relocating the septic drain field) and he did such a good job that the neighbors and I have been able to maintain a friendship. Thank you Sean!!

I had a DUI and a DWLS II to fight in court 3 years ago. Instead of getting a court appointed public pretender, like I was conscripted up until then, I decided to hire an actual professional lawyer. After a day of calling phone numbers in the Yellow Pages, I got a call back from Robert, and he met up with me in my town, probably an hour away from his, when my driver's license was suspended. I explained the situation I was facing, honestly, from my perspective, to him and he decided to represent me without money up front, to help me get my life back on track after being in jail for almost a month, until I could come up with a retainer fee by the first hearing. He said he could see I was a hard worker and believed I had the drive to get this business handled if I stuck to it. So, basically, I did stick to it, Coronavirus hit, spaced out court dates, and I spent a year in alcohol treatment. He got my DWLS II dropped to a third-degree and got me mentally prepared for, as well as a year ahead of, a deferred prosecution's probation, so once it was finished, I wound up doing a year of probation instead of two, and technically finished informal probation a year early. As far as I'm concerned, Robert Brungardt is the only legal representation I have had in this state worth paying thousands, if not tens of thousands of dollars if needed. Throughout my inadvertent dealings with the courts since 2016, I have never had better legal representation once. In regards to knowledge of the law, communication between client to attorney as well as attorney to courts, flexibility in payments, inclination to respond outside of court, bluntness, and sheer effectiveness, he is a prime cut above the rest in my book.

Mr. Brungardt pays attention to all the details and represents his clients as if they are family. You can count on above average pretrial settlements concerning your personal injury tort claims and know his professionalism, skills and knowledge of the law is in YOUR best interests... believe me!! I first met pat when I was unfortunate enough to land myself in mason county district court. He was appointed to me by the court and immediately obtained the best outcome for me. I recently obtained a probation violation and was appointed a different attorney for my defense. Pat saw my file and quickly appointed himself as my defense, he reviwed my case and got one violation dropped without me even being in the courtroom. He showed great intelligence and knowledge of my personal case even though it had been so long sense id been in court with him. I highly recommend Pat Lewis and he would be my first choice of defense counsel to hire if I ever was unfortunate enough to be in a legal situation again.

Kristen helped me with a family law case vs. CFS about 7 years ago. I was being wrongfully accused of neglecting my special needs child and CFS was attempting to gain permanent custody. Kristen was able to assist me with getting the case dropped and my child returned to me. Thankfully I have not been in the position to need a lawyer since, but if I did, she would be my first choice. She was knowledgeable and really good at explaining to me what was happening and what my options were. She was a very good support in a very tough situation and I appreciate her very much.

I am so grateful for the help I received from Rose Boughton. She was always in communication keeping me updated on my case. If I had a question, I received a reply in a timely manner. I can honestly say she worked just as hard, if not harder than some of the high priced Attorney’s I’ve retained in recent year’s. She knowledgeable, professional and was always prepared for a solid argument if need be. She devoted more time than I ever expected on my case. She took it very seriously exceeding my expectations as a Public Defender for sure.

I have been having a lot of drama lately. I can't afford to pay for an attorney. I have been very fortunate Ms. Palmer was assigned to my case. She LISTENS, advises from a position of caring what is best for me, has remained professional, calm, and reassuring when I have been anxious and very scared. Ms. Palmer is a great communicator, keeping me apprised of my options, and providing professional, unbiased advice. I believe she loves what she does because she has been so great for me. As she is in court often, speaking to clients, doing research, ensuring she has the most current and thorough information on her cases, she cannot respond to messages or accept phone calls right away. It may take two or three business days for her to return calls, but she is prepared to have an intelligent discussion when she does return phone calls. I truly hope the best for her and wish her every happiness as she deserves the best.

Jim is very down to earth and easy to work with. He's always quick to respond and knowledgeable. If he doesn't know the answer (which has been a rarity), he's not afraid to say he doesn't know but will check it out. He explains things is a way that's easy to understand.

Where do I begin? Mr. Finlay has about 30+ of experience. That should tell you a lot already. He has a fantastic personal office, right in the center of Shelton. That should tell you more. Mr. Finlay is a serious and highly capable attorney. Whatever serious matter you have in Shelton, or around - I suggest you talk to Mr. Finlay first. He has represented me on a very, very serious matter - 4 criminal cases against me, in two courts - District Court of Mason and Lakewood Municipal Court. It was all a lie, made up by a disgusting individual. But I digress. All 4 cases against me were dismissed. One of them - after a serious courtroom hearing, and back and forth arguments. Where Mr. Finlay has represented me to outmost quality. Basically, Mr. Finlay won that case, with my assistance. In short, you will be well-represented here. Mr. Finlay, I would say, is the top attorney in Shelton area.

I paid Bruce Finlay $5000 with the agreement that he would take the case to trial. Once hired, he only waved the court proceedings; lasting 2 years and then said he couldn't take it to trial. Moreover, his communication tactics were either ambiguous and confusing or nonexistent as he is often out of his office, leaving all the work for his paralegal. In hindsight, it would have been better to go with a public defender or hire an attorney out of Mason County.

We used Bruce Finlay for a civil matter. I was the victim of a hit and run and the other guy who hit me did not have insurance. Bruce was able to get me the maximum settlement paid to me by my insurance company with my underinsured benefits. He is really smart and knowledgeable about my rights and the law and never gives up. He always puts his clients first.

Adam was my court appointed attorney in a case involving CPS. He did nothing. Refused to do simple things I requested. I actually had to go above him and ask the judge himself if I could speak. My child would have went to foster care if I had not spoke up and did his job for him. I fired him and hired Steven McNeil. And I won after firing Adam. He's lazy . Unprepared. Rude. Very short with his clients. I absolutely DO NOT recommend him.

Glen Slate Firm was recommended to me by an attoney in Spokane, WA. I originally hired Glenn for my case, then I somehow ended up with Peter. If you want NO COMMUNICATION and a "WE"RE GOING TO LOSE ANYHOW SO WHY BOTHER" attitude, Peter is your man. His billing practices are questionable,( "bill and dip"), and had absolutely NO COMMUNICATION with me as a client. DID NOT EVEN DISCUSS CASES EVEN AFTER A RULING WAS MADE. He does what HE WANTS as far as litigating, and bills at top dollar,(ie-billed me even when I just stopped by the office by mistake.) PETER COST ME THOUSANDS WITH NO RESULTS. I finally fired him and found a REAL attorney. Big waste of time and money. If you are displeased with this guy, just fire him and move on. DO NOT give him the benefit of the doubt; cut your losses early.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
