James Wells is possibly one of the greatest Legal minds in the Ca area. My Family and I have had the pleasure of working with J.D. for more than 20 years and he has never failed us. The Oliver & Grey families are greatly pleased to have such honest representation during a time when many attorneys fail to meet the needs of there clients.

As it became clear that we could no longer avoid the need to address our family trust a good friend recommended attorney Lee Ann Shenkman in Soquel after she had solved some challenging problems for her family. The need to engage an attorney has never been something I would look forward to, however we were pleased to find that working Lee Ann felt more like we had a personal counselor who cared about us and our children’s future. We live 120 miles away, so all of our communications were by phone and email, and it turned out to be very convenient and efficient. We had a very complicated situation as older parents with a grown daughter and a teen adopted daughter both with special needs. Lee Ann provided us with the names of some trusted professionals who could act as the trustee of a special needs trust if we were deceased or incapacitated and we found it easy to make a selection. The word “trust” appears again and again throughout this experience but that’s the thing, we felt that we could “trust” Lee Ann’s advice and counsel. She sought to thoroughly ensure that our daughters financial future would be secure. We cannot imagine that another attorney could do a better job and be more caring partner in dealing with this important issue.

Ben has been our corporate and personal attorney for over 30 years. He has advised on many real estate legal, acquisition and divestment scenarios as well as designing personal trusts for estate planning. I have found him to be quite knowledgeable in most questions I have thrown his way and willing to admit when his expertise didn't cover a topic. In those rare cases he either was able to research the answer or refer to his network for the answers we needed.

We had a property issue and used the Sapia law firm. It was my first experience with a lawyer and I was so grateful we found her. She is very thorough, hard working, and very ethical. She will fight hard for her clients, and she also knows how to work well with a mediator. She is well connected in the area, and if there's an area of law that her firm does not manage, she is able to provide contacts to assist. If I need assistance in the future, I would not hesitate to use her services again. I found that she goes above and beyond regularly in her work. Adding to this, I've recently had an interaction with another lawyer for an out of state issue. The whole time, I just keep thinking how above and beyond Dinah Sapia is as a professional and person. If we need a lawyer here again, there is no doubt, I will be using her company!

Deborah has created, revised, updated, advised and supported me through a rather complicated, many times sad situation. Her advice and referrals to other specialized attorneys has been spot on. For one of the most important documents you will ever create, you need a specialist in the field, Deborah is that. I have and will continue to highly recommend her to others.

Deborah has advised me on myTrust over a period of 17 years when I've had to update it a few times to take into consideration impact of changes in relationship status, etc. She's everything the other reviewers say. Generous, low-key but very knowledgeable. She refers cases where you need "the aggressive type" lawyer to a colleague!

I would not recommend him. He uses poor language and curses when “trying” to convey his point of view. He is self involved and immoral.

I hired attorney Turner on a civil litigation matter. I needed defense. Jesse was well spoken and aggressive in court, and the judge listened to him with respect. We won, and the other side's case against me was thrown out.

I hired Jeremy Conrad for a green card case. I called his office for 2 months to get an update and he never returns calls. I finally went to his office to find out what was going on and found out he left the state, and handed my case to another lawyer who doesn't know what he is doing. He never notified me he was leaving. Very unprofessional.

He has been my attorney for over 15 years in real property, family and personal injury law. He tells it like it is and does not spent "hours" running up my bill. While it may take him a few days to get back to me it is always worth the wait.

We could not rely on him to do proper paperwork , return calls, be there at crucial times. He was MIA most of the time. He failed to keep us informed and was little to no help to us. I plan on filing with the Bar Association.

This is worst attorney in California. I fired this fraud immediately after I found out he has been disciplined by State Bar; which he tried to hide, he defrauded clients for thousands, did not provide contracted services yet still practices because he claims has done these frauds since he is mentally disabled. See the case for yourself, case SBC-20-O-30770 at https://www.statebarcourt.ca.gov/ Do yourself a favor and stay away.

Initially i think that he would he good choice to help me. But as other reviewer mentioned, he talks good game but that is aboiyt it. He enticed me with promises, but then few weeks later started to change them. It got to the point that i was afraid to go to his office alone without friend, it felt as if he was flirting with me yet he kept increasing the amount i had to leave on retainer. Final straw was when this creepy old men invited me on fun business trip and said i could refill retainer by helping him on that trip. I felt dirty just hearing that, he took advantage of me and i switched now to Jennifer Greene who is professional unlike this sleaze bag and much cheaper rate.I wish I had recorder him because he denies everything when my friend confront him later.

Martin did a very good job representing me through my divorce. We had to communicate by telephone , email , text , etc.. due to Covid and although the courts were not open and many delays by the court system we were able to complete the divorce. He was very helpful and kept all our appointments right on time. I am very happy with the outcome of the divorce settlement. I will recommend Martin to anyone that needs representation of whatever services he covers. Thank you again Martin.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
