John has represented and battled for me on two different fronts.....one of which, recently resulted in having custody of my 5 year old son, who now lives with me full-time!!! This was an ongoing struggle of nearly three years.....but John and his paralegall fought hard and proved that they cared as much about my son's best interest as I did.....and that means a whole hell of alot when your dealing with custody/parenting time matters!! John could have done far less and still charged the same amount of money....but that is just one of the things that set him apart from many of the attorneys in our county. I am honestly, with all of my heart, very grateful for what John and his paralegall have done for me and my son!!

I asked John to represent my son several months ago. He's so honest he hesitated to take my money until I understood he might not be able to help. He helped and I won't hesitate to call him again.

John put a great deal of preparation into my case and had a great courtroom presence and presentation. I happened to prevail in my case but told John before the end of the trail that if we happened to lose it would not be from lack of effort on his part.

Ms. Hosier represented my sibling who is mentally challenged. Although she did not have much knowledge regarding individuals with mental illness, she conducted extensive research and the next time we met was very knowledgeable. She was ready by the time we had to appear before the judge. She was timely, respectful, and listened to the client's concerns. Even though his behavior was extreme, and he demonstrated a different mental capacity, Ms. Hosier was able to weed out the useable comments and made a case for his defense. He was fairly represented and the charges were dismissed. Wonderful representation. Recommended highly! Will utilize her service again, should the need arise.

Has had my file and documents for almost a year now (since January 2022), I was just seeking some simple advice on a parcel of land. They tell me they need to get info from the county clerk and will respond whether or not we have a good case or not. About a month after dropping off my documents, I call and question the status, they said they were waiting on me, if I wanted to move forward with the case... I asked if they got what they needed from the clerk, and what their advice is (the whole reason I am here), and they act like they have no idea what I am talking about. I explain I am waiting on them to obtain documents so they can advise me if the case is worth pursuing... We do this 2 or 3 more times, and I finally request my documents back. It's been about a month now since I asked for my documents to be returned with no response. I will chalk that up to the holidays as they already keep a very strange schedule as it is...

Omgosh what is there good about this attorney? Nothing. Hired for a simple probate 8 months ago. It's still not started. My whole life is on hold for 8 long months with who knows how much longer. 😞 Update: It has now been over a year. Still not finished. I'd fire them but I don't want to start over and I have alot of money tied up in their service. Still stuck on hold. I have a buyer for my house but can't go forward. It's frustrating.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:

  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
