I recently called upon Attorney Trey Martin once again for his legal assistance, this time for a traffic-related matter. After leaving work late one night, I came upon what I later learned was a traffic checkpoint. It was very poorly executed with no visible police presence in the road as I passed through. As a result, I was apprehended and cited for “resisting, delaying, or obstructing a public officer.” With the same expertise and professionalism that he demonstrated during our last encounter in the fall of 2012 (previous review here [https://www.avvo.com/attorneys/28422-nc-fred-martin-4181062/reviews.html?page=2] under “Susan N.” dated November 4, 2012), Attorney Martin scored another victory today with a complete dismissal of the charge! I do not know of a more knowledgeable or skillful attorney in Brunswick County, NC. He is well respected by those in the court system and knows what to do and when to do it. Lastly, he is a gentleman who treats people with kindness and respect. I trust him, and you will, also. You simply cannot go wrong with Attorney Martin

My legal case was handled quickly and efficiently, and, more importantly, I received the services I was ensured I would receive. This case was a traffic ticket allegation that also involved a recall.

Mr.Stiller is not only a fantastic lawyer he is also a kind understanding and caring man . He respects you and does not treat you like other lawyers I have delt with . No matter what you hired him for good or bad . He takes the time to listen to you and explain what could or could not happen in your case. I would and have recommended him to all my family and friends . He has been a blessing in our family.

Hired to represent me in a SS Disability case. She only returns phone calls after leaving several messages. Does not prepare her SS clients for hearing; i.e. what to say, what to wear, what happens in the hearing. It appeared she had never read the contents of my case file and showed up to the hearing ill prepared. After the hearing, she does not follow up to explain any aspect of the proceeding. I was very disappointed and frustrated with how i was represented in my case. I feel certain the SS Judge knew I was poorly represented as well yet ruled with a favorable decision. I would not recommend hiring Ms. Savidge for representaion

Personally I think my ALJ hearing went good but Monica told me she was not optimistic about it , allow me to explain ,,,, one of my diagnosis is agoraphobia , and my sister with whom I live testafied truthfully that it was very hard to get me to come out of my room. Well the judge found out via my testimony that at the time of the hearing I had a pending shoplifting charge (later dismissed) and he asked my sister , well what about the shoplifting ? And she said she didnt take me to the store that my brother did , ok so what's the big deal? Agoraphobia is defined as becoming scared on the outside if alone , I only went to the store and the manager accused me of stealing , but she lied on me because I was acting panicky because of agoraphobia and it was dismissed for lack of evidence a month later after the hearing , well i've not been back to any stores period , only to doctors appts etc , well after the hearing I called Monica's Southport office several days in a row only to get voice mail, I left 3 different messages to please call me but a week and 3 days past , I did get anxious and leave a message with anger in my voice and thats what promt her to call me and tell me not to keep calling leaving messages everyday , with anger in her voice also , well i asked her what did she think about the hearing and thats when she said not optimistic, so I've been waiting on a denial letter because i had lost all hope after fighting over 3yrs until I found this site on here called avvo , and told my story about how the hearing went and received possitive feedback , comments like ( very promising) and ( sounds like youll get approved , now I have hope again, now I'm going into week 6 havent heard nothing yet and monica hasnt called either, and to scared to call her , so i guess I will call ssi if i havent heard something by Friday 03/02/2018.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
