They gave me all the information I needed in a timely fashion and my pubic defender was extremely helpful as he answered my call the first time I called. And he said he'd do everything to help me as quickly as possible. That was the best service I could possibly ask for and I appreciated my public defender's help.

No idea if they are any good but customer service is awful! Called in March 2023, early April 2023, and a week later and left both voicemail and messages with staff to contact me for new business. To this date, still havent heard. Spooner must be booming

My case was won that I hired this attorney for--hard to lose a unemployment case such as mine--I probably didn't need a lawyer, but I had never gone through this kind of situation before. The problem is that when I said "I don't even know how much this is going to cost me.", Mr. Mulligan replied, "Oh, dont worry, it won't be much." I then assumed it would cost around $500 tops. The whole proceedure was probably no more than 5 hours worth. I did not recieve a quote, I did not receive a proposal, and the bill came well after the case was solved. When I opened the envelope, I found out the winner would definitely be Mr. Mulligan. I was living off of a loan from my a local bank that I have done business with for years until I could possibly receive my back unemployment or get a job.My landlord was an extremely compassionate, trusting, and patient man, because he was waiting for 2 and a half months for his rent, so I wouldn't run out of money from the bank loan. I went on umemployment to begin with because my only client for the company I worked for died. I had no money. The day I opened the envelope from Mr. Mulligan's office, I just about died myself. His "not much" was more than I made in one month. I would hate to see his expensive stuff. The bill was for $1500. Now, if you make $300 an hour, $1500 isn't much. But when you are living on unemployment, even if you are receiving the top amount, $1500 is major and quite impossible to pay along with everyday expenses. My interpretation of "not much" is definitely not what Mr. Mulligan's is.

MrJames McLaughlin helped me in a desperate time of need. Through my recent divorce I got pretty depressed and I was consuming alcohol on an everyday basis. I hate to admit this online to everyone but I know it’s for a good cause... I rolled my vehicle multiple times with my 2 year old in car while I was driving intoxicated. MrMcLaughlin directed me not only that I needed help but where to go to find it. Because of him I was able pay my fines, to graduate alcohol classes and get on medication that I needed. He showed me how turn everything back around. he got what would have been my first felony dropped down to a misdemeanor. I haven’t been intoxicated since that night. My medication has been a huge success and my case is closed and I’ll never go back! Thank you MR McLaughlin you really helped me when I was in a very dark place! I am Very grateful that there are people in this world that actually want to see you get better and want to help you even knowing that you made a horrible mistake. My son and I are forever in debt for everything MrMcLaughlin has got us through. THANK YOU!!!!!

Absolutely no people skills. During my probable cause hearing while she was testifying her hands visibly trembled. Embarrassing and great way to show confidence. Getting a reply from her is like pulling teeth. Dont settle for this attorney.

Got Stephanie for a case that started in august. Couldn’t get in contact with her until May literally minutes before my court hearing which pissed me and the judge off. She refuses to answer her phone. When we finally spoke she was condescending and rude. I told her I haven’t had a single missed call or voicemail after she claimed she tried reaching out. I called my service carrier to see if there was an issue and they said there wasn’t so my only option is to assume she lied. I tried reaching out to the DA myself and I can’t talk to them because she’s assigned to my case. But she won’t answer any of her contacts so we can discuss it.. not only did she look unprofessional in our meet but she evidently is not very competent in her profession. If you’re appointed Stephanie I HIGHLY recommend firing her and getting a new one!

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
