This is the kind of person anyone should consider hiring in her field of expertise. She listens without judgement and communicates with you on a personal level. I went to Kelli Walker for a serious matter and left with complete confidence and respect for her.

Paul is very very wise! He knows the law like the back of his hand. He has a very good memory and can pull from memory details of the law that are crucial when giving advice. He also has many years of experience as a lawyer and is the type of professional that continues to grow in knowledge and experience by his own desire to improve and be his best. I appreciate this because he is passionate about what he does. Furthermore, I needed a lawyer that knew what was coming up regarding changes in Illinois law. Paul was aware of what was going on with Illinois and therefore he could help me plan ahead. Besides being very smart Paul is very compassionate. He is kind with his words, his tone and his approach. He also is flexible. He counseled me over the phone. This saved me gas and time! Paul is not only wise but humble. This quality is important. It gave me confidence that he could protect me because he was diligent and thorough! It takes a humble attitude to perform at such a high standard as a lawyer. Every dollar I have spent was absolutely worth it. He has saved me many mistakes that would not have been intended results on my part by allowing me to have access to his time on a regular basis. He also let me pay him as we went. I did not pay a retainer. I called often for advice. Never did I feel like I was bothering him, annoying, ignorant or a pain. I felt very much the opposite. He respected me and encouraged me through his wisdom and kindness. My confidence grew as time went on. Another quality Paul has that I appreciated is he helped me navigate the Illinois statutes and explained to me the expectations judges have of parents. He gave me titles of books that I could consider reading so I would be an informed parent. These parenting books regarding divorce/custody have information in them that the court would agree with. By being an informed parent I was able to be an even better parent than before. He is someone I can trust! I could tell him anything I thought I had every possibly done that would be detrimental to my case. He would then inform me if I had just a fear or if I needed to change something about my behavior. He is someone I could open up to and I knew he would not judge me. I knew he was there to help me be a great parent and do what is best. I simply can not say enough about this outstanding attorney. I wish I had the words to properly express my gratitude and his value to me as a lawyer.

Hired Mertes and his staff for legal help after I got into some trouble. They explained everything very clearly. Made everything just easy on myself. Mertes is the only people I would ever consider hiring if I need some kind of help.

The Law Firm of Mertes and Mertes really helped my family through some rough times. The whole staff was awesome. Each case is assigned to a specific paralegal or legal assistant from the beginning. What this meant for me is that I always talked to the same person who always knew what was going on in my case. That means a lot when your whole future depends upon the outcome of the case. They explained things from the very start, and didn't make us feel stupid when we asked questions. I recommend them to everyone! This law firm is amazing!

Jim Mertes is a great lawyer. He has represented me twice now, and I have referred my family and friends to him. They have also been thrilled with him. You can actually see him in action by searching his name in youtube and watching his opening and closing arguments in a first degree murder trial. After that three-week trial, his client was found not guilty of first degree murder in just 22 minutes! My case was not nearly as big as that case, but he treated it with just as much care and attention.

I have spent close to 4,000.00 dollars on a divorce that has taken nearly 2 years.Tony Miller did not do a thing for me exept charge me more money. When I would contact Tony and leave a message I would not hear from him for somtimes up to 2 weeks if at all. My Wifes Lawyer, and yes I said wife because i'm still not divorced. her Lawyer was always saying she was waiting on my lawyer and he never did what he said he was going to do. He never submitted paperwork when I got out of the service (Army) and was unemployed. now i have back child support based on that pay for over a year at about 14,000 that needs to be fixed...I finaly got rid of him cause i can't afford to pay for nothing anymore. so if you enjoy wasting money and seeing no results Tony Miller is your man......I could not explain how frustrating this whole thing has been....thanks for making things worse and your welcome for the free money...

I wish I could leave 0 stars. Huffman was a very incompetent lawyer. My husband used him for a family lawyer for two and a half years. I can count on my two hands how many times we actually spoke to Huffman, even during emergencies he was extremely hard to contact. He barely got anything done, dragging out the court process an excessive amount of time. And then drop my husband as a client as soon as he could, without any warning. We are just know finding out, over a year after he resigned as my husbands attorney, that he never properly filed the documents correctly with the judge. Putting us back 4 years of progress, which we now have to start over. I would never recommend him.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.

Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
