Brian understood my car accident and head injury because he's had a similar experience. It helps a lot to be represented by someone who understands more than the legal aspects of representing you. He was careful and patient in dealing with the insurance company, and in the end we got a settlement for the maximum award without having to go to court. The best possible result.

Brian helped us after our son was involved in a car accident. We found him to be very professional, straightforward and easy to work with. He listened to our concerns and worked with us to agree a strategy for how to approach the case. Although our son's case was not particularly complex we wanted Brian to represent our son in court. Thanks to Brian we got the best possible result we could have wished for. We are very happy we asked Brian to help us and highly recommend him to others.

Brian Finnerty is an excellent personal injury attorney and a truly gifted trial attorney. I have seen him in action and he simply outclasses his opponents with his meticulous preparation and his unfailing ability to persuade a jury. When friends or family members are injury victims I will not send them to anyone but Brian Finnerty.

When my father and I came to see Samantha, we were struggling with what seemed like an insurmountable challenge: applying for and obtaining MassHealth benefits for my 86-year old mother, who has late-stage Alzheimer’s and who was in desperate need of round-the-clock care. The MassHealth approval process has innumerable requirements. It is tricky, and it is one of those applications where it would be easy to make a mistake and end up creating delays if I had attempted to navigate it myself. Samantha, however, stepped in with her considerable knowledge, her sharp attention to detail, and her diligence, and made this overwhelming task completely manageable. She would check in with me, or I with her, and her guidance and *patience* during this time was invaluable. She was always available to answer questions, not only mine, but anyone who was providing us with essential documentation for the application, and who might need an explanation of what was required. She called in for three-way conferences, and wrote emails on our behalf requesting information. We always knew where we stood, and she anticipated and prepared us for any potential problems, which she would then help us to resolve. She is utterly honest and straightforward. Several months on now, my parents’ lives have improved immeasurably: my mother is securely cared for, in her own home, with all the attention and guidance we could ever hope for—and all owing to Samantha’s considerable efforts on our behalf. I cannot recommend her highly enough.

I highly recommend Samantha Gentel as a elder lawyer. She was profession and patient at a time in my life when my 91 year old mother had fallen in her home and needed to be placed in a nursing facility. So many people to speak with, so much to deal with. Applying for Medicaid seemed like an awfully difficult task to do by myself. Thank God, for Samantha. She was patient and steady for me and got the Medicaid application completed and approved. I could not have done this without her help and I would not recommend anyone do it alone. Thank you so much.

Samantha was instrumental in establishing my 91-year old mother’s eligibility for MassHealth benefits. In doing so, she conveyed an in-depth understanding of this tedious and complicated process. Throughout, Samantha was well organized, persistent and attentive to details, which if neglected, would cause delays. My mother’s eligibility also involved my father’s financial situation. Samantha was able to clearly explain what needed to be done and why. Because of her efforts, MassHealth provided a quick, positive response. As important, Samantha was always accessible, kept us informed and was responsive to questions we had.

Lisa represented me on several matters stemming from the aftermath of a high conflict divorce that resulted in additional litigation with my ex-husband after we divorced. These included restraining orders, two divorce modifications to change parenting schedules, contempt actions, and a host of other issues when my ex would do everything he could to make my life difficult and not adhere to our Agreement. Because the relationship with my ex was so contentious and my minor son was caught in the middle of the chaos, I needed someone to help me navigate so many moving parts expertly. At one point, I was in court 8x in 1 year and almost that many times the following year. It was truly an awful, emotional and draining time and if I did not have Lisa's calming, controlled, and sensitive demeanor to help me hold it together, I don't know what I would have done. All of this was coupled with her brilliant legal expertise. She is extraordinarily strategic, skilled, and on top of every nuance of even the most complex matters. She is incredibly responsive and will devote herself to your case, putting your child at the center of all decisions, even when your emotions are running over and you cannot see the forest from the trees. She is formidable in court and completely prepared each and every time. With the exception of a single issue, we prevailed in all matters we brought to court. She is excellent at finding creative solutions to problems you cannot see a way out of and knows how to create agreements that will work for you and your child for the long-term. I have recommended Lisa to others who need a brilliant, top notch, dedicated legal mind--that's what she is--as well as a caring, compassionate person to handle any family/divorce/custody matter. You could not be in better hands.

I am a young professional who, while not currently affluent, stand to inherit a considerable amount of money from my family. Lisa was able to construct an agreement that would allow my wife and I to share in the growth of our marriage while also reassuring my family that our assets would be protected. She answered all of my questions, but was never condescending. She acted on all of my requests or explained to my satisfaction why she was unable to do so/ could not recommend it. She was even able to recommend a new attorney for my then-fiancée when her first lawyer proved to be not up to the job.

Dear Marcia, I am writing you this letter to thank you and in particular Katie Kerr for her outstanding job with my divorce. Katie followed up every detail and ensured the settlement of my divorce was fair and equitable, I initially feared being taken advantage of by now former wife through the legal process, but to my surprise it did not happen Katie did an excellent job, protecting my rights and what remained of my assets. I am a professional making well into the six figures, and I can sleep at night, now that it is over and justice was served, and it only happened, because of her gift of fact finding and care to details. Marcia, I will always recommend your team and of course your star Katie to all of my colleagues when the need arises. Thank you for everything. DB

I should have known things were apt to get rocky when "Ronnie" her assistant mind you NOT qualified paralegal that should be handling your case is ever eager to answer your phone call for business but after you have paid your retainer fee you are met by nothing but a direct line straight to voicemail and returned by minimal responses by email only. You are told that Lisa Ehrmann is always in Court. Her assistant is pretty much Spearheading your case and when Ronnie made ameture mistakes with my case and my money, (Ronnie)Ehrmann’s assistant cost me 1500 in dollars in unnecessary Court fee's by making egregious mistakes in handling simple information from my lawyer and myself having to do with the DRO settlement from my divorce. The judge even allowed us to call Ehrmann and Associates in the Court room to question why we were told over and over again they still had not received any of the required paper work from my ex-husband or the required check??? My ex-husband showed the Judge a photo copy from Citizens bank proving that lisa's office had indeed cashed his father's check over a month ago!!. The only time my lawyer or myself received a phone call was after my lawyer was permited to make an attempt in front of the judge demanding explanation for wasted time on all of our behalfs and lost wages for me in forking over 932 dollars in lost court fee's because no one picked up from Lisa Ehrmann’s office only DIRECT VOICEMAIL that tells you they will get back to you by email in one or two business day's. I lost my case and Ronnie NOT Lisa the actual lawyer you hired called back to say..I "thought" that you said you we "pro se" I had to Google it and it means to represent your self. I yelled you have been corresponding with my lawyer who handled my divorce this whole time!!!. Ronnie also returned my lawyer's phone call after she herself left them an angry message accusing them both of irresponsible negligence involving the handling of my case also demanding my retainer fee back of 387.50 to be exact that wasn't even responded to. Save yourself time and money before you hire this bruiser duo to represent you or handle your case.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
