Gary was recommended to me by my realtor as being the best attorney to help me thru the process of purchasing a HUD owned property - due to his meticulous & thorough nature. I was immediately impressed by the detail in Gary's dialogue during our initial consultation - he very clearly stated the tasks at hand for our respective roles & was very transparent about items we needed clarity on from the government office we were working with. The following discussions with Gary were truly enjoyable - he would offer updates & never hesitated to explain the 'building blocks' of any particular aspect at my request. He was inspiring, even with his general status reports. When we worked our way into the homestretch of closing on the property, i mentioned that I was worried some of my labor crews would not be available to help remediate the property on our timeline, Gary worked on my behalf at warp speed to close on an updated schedule that solved this conflict. He was nothing short of a blessing!

My husband and I sought out Gary Miller to draw up life planning documents (will, POA, etc) for us. He was easy to schedule with, a jargon-free communicator, and genuinely interested in us making informed decisions. We had a very positive experience.

I am a professional that was injured on the job at a hospital. There were several witnesses that were instructed to lie or loose their jobs if they told what they saw happen to me. They denied paying my bills & denied paying my worker's comp. I prayed for help. I went to watch a Workman's Comp case that was being held in a court house close to my home to get advice on what to do & who to hire. At the end of the case I asked the court official if he knew a great workman's comp attorney. He said he was not allowed to give any names but he told me that the attorney Richard B. Harper that just did the case that I watched used to be the Judge for woker's compensation cases & that he now is an Attorney helping people with their cases. You will not get any better representation anywhere in the state of NC than Richard B. Harper because he is the only attorney I know of that used to be the Judge that decided cases for workman's comp. He has been in practice for many years & knows worker's compensation law inside & out. Yes his office is far away in Sylva, NC but that is never an issue because he will travel to you or see you on the internet. He & his office staff are outstanding, compassionate, & understanding. He only does workman's comp cases, unlike other attorneys that do many other type of work. We had to go to trial to prove my case, he was the best person possible & was able to get the witnesses to admit to what had happened. He won my case for me & made sure all my bills were paid. Even after getting my settlement check he still sent letters when bills surfaced & made sure they were taken care of. He also made sure that he included in my settlement that the insurance would be responsible for all future bills/medical care for my life time related to my injury. I was truly blessed to have had such a wonderful attorney along with Talani his wonderful office assistant. I have had to call them a few time for advice, they always make time to talk to me & advize me or give me referrals when related to other types of law. Do youself a favor & hire someone that use to be the Judge deciding workman's comp cases as he know 1st hand how to win your case.

Joseph Chilton listens. He actively participates in the conversation and acquires the necessary information he needs to represent you without the truncated "questionnaires" used by the "billable hours" species of attorney. He is approachable and doesn't overshadow you with what is obviously a brilliant legal intellect. In Court he decisively wins arguments because he is right, and he comes to Court armed with salient research and case histories. In the era of Family Law matters being drawn out to extract the last cent from the unfortunate participants, Mr. Chilton knows that another month without custody of your child is cruel. Fortunately, the trend in Judge's opinion's have been progressively leaning toward the true best interest's of the children and families and away from the frivolous motion laden lawyers with an entirely different agenda. Judges see that ethical foundation in Joseph Chilton. I certainly do. You should hear truth and experience economy of action from an attorney when you are at, usually, the lowest point in your life. If we, as an informed citizenry, do not support and retain attorneys like Joseph Chilton, there won't be attorneys like Joseph Chilton. Justice in that case would not have failed us -- it would have divorced us.

I called this firm and explained my situation and they were very knowledgeable about what the law will allow and not allow in a personal injury case. Of course it was not what I wanted to hear but I greatly appreciate them not beating around the bush and wasting my time. They offered another attorney name as a second opinion which I greatly appreciate. Thank you

Talking to a lawyer can be intimidating. But Mr. Harper and his son, Josh, are very knowledgeable about workers comp. and go well above the norm to make you feel at ease and keep you informed on your case. They have always been available if we had a question, or in need of information. I would highly recommend their law firm for any worker’s compensation problems. I would also give them 10 stars, if I could- I absolutely 100% recommend them!! Best lawyers in the area.

Because of his quick response, my family was able to gather valuable information for the case. The trial was not near Mr. Wells' location, or we would have hired him. He was able to give advice for choosing a lawyer. His consultation was priceless!

They refunded a substantial amount which I really appreciated. He definitely did his job thank you so much! I also appreciated the break down of the cost. I hired Mr. Morgan to facilitate and have recorded a property sale related to a 10-31 tax exchange. On the sale of the property and recording the deed and associated paperwork, Mr. Morgan performed well. On the issue of closing a property in accordance with a 10-31 tax exchange, he claimed to have experience in the matter and in fact bungled the attempt. Only after I spent several days thinking about what Mr. Morgan had done to me (by conducting the initial closing related to the 10-31 exchange in the way that he did) I called him and expressed my concerns. He then started to take my concerns to heart, began to consult with my 10-31 attorney that I had made available to him from the beginning, and the upshot was he completely redid the closing to accomplish my goals. I am still not sure that I will not be subject to massive capital gain taxes, the avoidance of such being the point of a 10-31 exchange. I will, of course, be finding out next tax season, next year. To add insult to injury, at the conclusion of our work, I asked Mr. Morgan to write a simple letter to some neighbors that had been harassing me. He said he would but a week later claimed he was to busy to do it. After I informed him I would wait, he then made up some story about having too many of that kind of work to do that for me . Faced with his obvious lies, I think he was trying to get rid of me after the embarrassment of his incompetent bungling of the work he did for me. However, character does matter. I would not hire this attorney again.

I came in one minute until close and they still found time to talk with me and interview me and give me some information. Then they call me later on to discuss my situation with me further. Although they could not have an attorney at my court date they were kind enough to let me know that ahead of time and give me the heads up and what to do and most importantly did not leave me hanging.

I am from Arkansas and found I needed an attorney in North Carolina, David and Josh did an amazing job, they handled everything very well when I made my way to North Carolina they had all the paperwork I needed ready to go. They were always quick to call back if they did not answer the phone. I felt completely comfortable through the whole case. Being that laws are different in Arkansas than North Carolina they made sure they were very clear on how everything happens there, and were able to successfully help me with my case.

Avoid this attorney to handle any domestic issue. He does not file things properly or on time. He does not present evidence. This attorney severely mishandled my case. He was demeaning, insulting and did not act on my behalf. I caught him in several lies. Did not respond according to my concerns, evidence or false actions from the other side. He cost me $240,000.00 in post separation and alimony leaving me at over 3 million dollar loss and 14 years of my life gone. He has way to many excuses. The excuses do not support the documented facts! Thumbs Down!

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
