Kathleen was my attorney for Divorce and custody case, She did an amazing Job in negotiating last minute! She literally did a “Hail Mary” minutes before Trial she struck a deal on my high conflict ex that saved me Thousands of Dollars. She always kept her cool and calmed me down when I felt like I was loosing everything. Kathleen is a tough attorney and I pray I never ever need an attorney again but if I do she’s my girl! I consulted with many attorneys before and after her but I knew the moment I met her she was the one. I made the mistake of ignoring my gut and went with a way more expensive attorney that someone recommended because I assumed “You get what you pay for” although that may be true in some situations… Not in my case. With my first attorney the retainer was gone within first couple courts dates , had I kept the other attorney I would have lost thousands of dollars. Kathleen wasn’t just trying to get a pay check she was actually trying to help me she actually cared. Attorneys are busy people they have a lot going on and I sometimes felt discouraged when I didn’t hear back from them seconds from me emailing or calling I remembered they are busy and I just had to be patient and usually the things I emailed them about where just me being anxious and worried so if it was something that really required immediate attention they would respond immediately! But when it was just my anxiety I think they saw that and let me be until I calmed down and I see that now and appreciate it. Plus I did email them A lot I will admit that. I’m very thankful to Kathleen and her staff for all the hard works and stacks and stacks ( atleast 2k pages) of paperwork During discovery they had to look through. Highly recommend Kathleen on your side in Family court.

My wife and her ex had agreed to have her son come back to her when she settled back into Florida. In 2020 when Covid hit he saw that he started to get stimulus checks for the boy and refused to return him in addition to hitting her up for child support. At one point, after multiple hearings on our own, we realized we needed a lawyer. We found Kathleen Phillips. Her and her team immediately took all our information, the facts and got to work. They handled everything. Kathleen had a plan and executed it perfectly! In front of us, because we had to fly to California for the hearing. I'm happy to say that I've asked my wife to write this review for weeks but she's been too busy with her son. So, I took it upon myself to write it because Kathleen Phillips was a Godsend to us. We would Highly Recommend her to anyone in need of a lawyer.

DO NOT USE THIS ATTORNEY- I wish I could give her zero stars. I was referred to this attorney by a legal service. I called and sent an email. She responded very quickly. I told her of my horrible situation. My mother had passed away very unexpectedly. And we had an issue with the city utilities. I needed a letter to the city so I could make decisions and I needed executor (uncontested) and probate services. She said she could take care of everything. I hired her. She got the letter to me within a couple of days along with the documents for my family members to sign. I returned them. I paid her for filing fees a short time later and asked her to move forward. After 2-3 weeks I hadn't heard anything about a court date so I called her and emailed her several times. I spoke with her receptionist who assured me that the messages were forwarded. Approximately 2 weeks later she responded saying the best way to contact her was through email and that the documents hadn't been filed because she was missing a document. I quickly uploaded the document and resent it. Again I reached out it took her over a week to respond and said another document was missing. I advised her that i no longer required her services and requested a full refund of my filing fees. She refused. She said that she was going to deduct her fees and return the rest. I was referred through a legal referral service she had hours that she was to bill them for then myself. She never billed them and hasn't returned my money, it's been 3 1/2 months. DO NOT USE THIS ATTORNEY!

What a horrific experience. Thankfully we were able to hire a competent attorney for our simple cases, however we were never able to recoup the thousands of dollars we gave her for filing wrong motions and even being criticized by the judge on two cases. Hope nobody else falls for her scheme of playing attorney.

We met Heather at a guardianship workshop she provided at our son's school. In learning more about her approach and services in a subsequent consultation, we felt that Heather had the right outlook, skill set, and resources to help our family. I especially appreciated how organized everything was, and that important information was exchanged through a secure online platform. Heather added unique value to our estate planning through the child protection plan, and the recorded interview. In having been selected as a potential guardian and healthcare advocate for other family members, I can say that the documents and communication I received then were nowhere near as detailed and professional as those that were sent by Heather to our chosen advocates. We were extremely happy with our choice to hire Heather, and feel confident and at peace knowing everything was handled appropriately, and in our family's best interest.

  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.

If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.

  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
