If you are looking for someone who cares and who takes the time to explain things in a way you will understand then you need not go any further than Jim. Very good at returning phone calls too. A man with a heart and a lot of knowledge.

My court appointed attorney Ashley Hawkins/Swartz, In my opinion has done ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to help me regarding my court case. She has tried to convince me to waive my right to a speedy trial(which is exactly what the prosecutor wanted me to do), She rarely returns my phone calls, filed no objections when TWO Marion County Sheriff's deputies gave conflicting statements(under oath), She had NO IDEA what the maximum sentence for my charge was(She ARGUED with me about it, saying that I was facing 6months in jail when in reality it carries a maximum sentence of 30 days), She would call me from her cell phone..but then complained and filed to withdraw from being my attorney when I called her back at the same number.( I'm beginning to think that my case is her first one), I have done more legwork and legal research on my case than she has.! My right to a speedy trial states that for an M4 misdemeanor my case be finished within 90days.. However, It has now been 6 MONTHS and I STILL have No final court date set. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS ATTORNEY TO ANYONE.! In my opinion, Attorney Ashley Hawkins/Swartz should go back to her previous career at Walmart.!

No professionalism, misappropriation of client funds. The lawyer Kelle Saull has no business practicing law and is a complete disgrace to the legal community. Having been involved in all aspects of assisting clients, I am shocked Kelle is still able to retain clients.

She is very nice. But My husband had an appeal case an lost it cause she had 4 different chances in a 3 month stretch.. the courts kept giving her extended time to get her arguement in for his appeal all 4 times she never put it in.. due to that they threw out his appeal. After that she had 10 days to put paper work in for them to pick it back with good cause to pick it up beings the courts gave her many extensions an her reasoning was only that she didn't get it in due to her "scheduling" an the courts found that not a good enough reason their selfs. . So they would not pick it back up so he is stuck in prison for 3 yrs on being wrongful charged. She did nothing on the case that was supposed to be done.. the appeal office of lima has said this is not the first time she has caused some one to lose there appeal. I hope in the future things with her get better cause she a very nice lady an smart just not on top of the cases or mayb she picks an choose what ones to worry bout I don't know..

I have been working with Atty. Saull for going on 9 years. I never go in to court doubting her knowledge or abilities. Phone and office visits happen for updates, communication is fairly easy, and if you aren’t sure what something means, she gladly informs. Each time working with her, the problem is solved with the most positive outcome. I would, and do, 100% recommend Kelle.

She didn't listen, didn't care and just wanted to finish it up. Worst experience ever. She didn't communicate and just swooped in to finish up the case after 2 years of work. She didn't care about my child or the situation. She probably doesn't even know my kids name. She doesn't know how to talk to someone unless its condescending.

Had an appointment set up to speak with this attorney only to be called two hours prior to appointment, with appointment set up for days before Appointment time, telling him that there was a conflict of interest. I don’t feel this was very professional nor did they do their due diligence if there was a conflict and the days prior before the appointment time!

Heather Cockley should be in prison for the crap she did while she was a judge and magistrate. She did things like award the son of a friend of hers full custody without even really considering all the facts. It wasn't justice, it was a favor to a friend. Her ego is massive. On another occasion Heather Cockley tried to force a father to agree with her and purjor himself. When he stood firm in his opinion she immediately set things up in a trap so he would end up in jail. At some point she began an affair with a local police officer on the Mansfield force. Generally, she has anger issues with men and is misogynistic. This is the basis of many of her so-called "just" decisions. She has been a bane and a curse to fatherhood in Richland county. Just ask around. Many times she got members of her court to go out of their way to perform activities that benefited people she favored and/or cause problems for those she decides she doesn't like. There are multiple instances of Heather Cockley having angry and emotional outbursts in the court room and this is highly inappropriate for any judge or magistrate. These are a few of the many reasons why Heather Cockley should NEVER be allowed near a judge's bench and should be banned from practicing any type of law, especially where it involves children.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
