I have known Tom Gooch for almost 20 years and I highly recommend his legal services. His experience in the local courts is unparalleled. Simply put, Tom has the instincts of a veteran barn cat. He quietly stalks his prey - watching, waiting, smelling the air, letting his prey get comfortable - until he finally pounces on the opposing counsel's lawsuit (or countersuit) in one climactic strike, dismembering it in a flurry of gore and feathers. Thank you for another favorable outcome in court, Tom!

Gooch is very poor on docketing appearance dates. He's had this weakness all along forcing clients to go after him for blowing the case, because he didnt appear or file on time. I was working with a 300 day deadline, and Me, the client, had to call in and remind him that a most important and key filing was due that very day. I travel long distances to his office, and there were two occasions when I was told to be at his office, then when I show up, "oh, didnt my people call you, there was change in scheduling", hence for me loss of one days pay each time. There is another view, where Gooch supposedly told a client he talks too much. He told me the same ting. It saeems that when you call him on his lack of attention to detail and to your case, he responds by attacking you, the client. Lastly, DO insist on a monthly accounting of all retainers paid, Ive paid him $27,500 as a retainer, and I have yet to get a monthly accounting from him, he was retained by me for 3 years. First case, I asked to go to trial, he said no, take a bad deal instead. I told him to void with the court - the bad deal signed the day before, and he said he wasnt going to do that, that I will need to hire another lawyer to do that for me??!! So the second case never went forward, I asked for a retainer refund, and was told there wont be one, too bad - no refunds!! Think about my experience before pulling out your checkbook and writing large sums on the check to him.

John was recommended by a RE broker to handle a simple purchase of a 6 flat. There were some complications determning who the owner really was. As John and the broker dragged their feet, the inspection period lapsed, the selling broker is now refusing to return the deposit. I have called John everyday for a couple weeks. He screens his calls and refuses to answer. I called the broker to see if he could get in touch with John and two days later received a letter from John saying he talked to the broker and I should just settle with getting half the deposit back and it was my fault since I backed out of the contract. He fails to see that I backed out of the contract because of his urging. I also feel it is unethical to discuss my legal position with a broker and then send me a letter telling me what I should do and to basically don't bother him.

He helped me with a tough real estate deal that required a balloon note and dealing with some less than forthcoming people. He was able to help me protect my interests when their lawyer wasn't staying on top of the issues. I definitely plan to use John Ekonomou's services again - and not just for real estate!

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.

For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
