I really, really appreciated having Rebecca Guyette in my corner over the last year and a half as my divorce dragged on and on due to my former spouse's combative recalcitrance. I think I would have gone insane if not for her calm confidence, support, and professional expertise. I appreciate her immensely and recommend her without reservation.

Amanda was exceptional. Similar to wanting a doctor with great bedside manner, she was an outstanding lawyer. She is intelligent, calm, kind and methodical. Unlike many lawyers, she isn’t interested in racking up your billable hours; she works efficiently and only in your best interest. She always responded quickly to calls and emails. Her demeanor was professional yet stern. She is well respected by mediators and judges. My divorce was extremely stressful and Amanda did a great job keeping me calm during times where I was super emotional and stressed. She continued to be the voice of reason and kept me on the course which led to my desired outcome. I would highly recommend Amanda, especially to any man going through a custody battle.

If you are looking for serious criminal defense, look no further than Jim Ventura. I met Jim after I was arrested and charged with illegal possession of firearms and illegal distribution of explosives. Since I had prior federal convictions for both of those things, I was looking at the prospect of dying in federal prison. By far, the gun charges were the most serious as they would have mandated a prison sentence of 10 years or more. Somehow, Mr. Ventura got the gun charges dropped. This is simply unheard of. And I was not caught with my grandfather's .22 rifle and 50 rounds of ammo. I was found in possession of numerous guns, (again) including an assault rifle (again) and almost 10,000 rounds of ammunition (again). Given these facts, and my criminal history, Harry Houdini could not have made those gun charges disappear but somehow Mr. Ventura did the impossible. Not only did he clear me of significant mandatory prison time for the guns, he got the prosecutor to recommend a greatly reduced sentence on the explosives charges! In the end, I was sent to a cupcake low security federal prison for 18 months, instead of Gladiator School in a US Penitentiary, where almost everyone goes when convicted of explosives violations. In short, Mr. Ventura SAVED MY LIFE and I will be forever grateful to him.

Kerry Anne had a clear and definite plan during a brief consult two months ago. You can hear on the phone that has a logical train of thought and uses clear English and projects her voice well. This involved family court OFP. I think she would work very fast and determined with respect to her work and practice in family law. Although, she was hesitant when I mentioned include extra assistance in the form of a private investigator (Behavioral Intelligence Agent) she did concede that she would be open to consulting at her hourly rate as an intermediary advisor outside of court. *Please shop wisely and use lawyers who are willing to work with a full team of experts.

I talked with another lawyer who wasn't interested in helping me because I wasn't looking for a financial payout. Mr Robin and Fossey met with me, spent a lot of time getting to know me and what I was looking for, despite the lack of a big financial gain. Ultimately they gave me enough advice I didn't need to use lawyers to settle my case, but would have used these guys in a heartbeat.

Jim was my parents lawyer for many years. He was a great help to them as they moved from being on their own, to needing help, and finally he was there to help us through both of theirs passings. He was always able to answer our questions in a maner that we could understand. This was sometimes a challenge with my 80 year old mother, but Jim was patient and reassuring to her. He always gave us clear and concise answers, but did not talk down to her or us. His information was good and helped us make the decisions we needed to make. He guided us along the way, he did not tell us what he wanted us to do. His services always seemed fairly priced.

I have had him handle several real estate transactions. Kyle represented me in my high-conflict child custody case. From the first time I met with him I instantly felt like he understood my unique situation and genuinely cared about the wellbeing and stability of my children. I was very pleased with his prompt response to my needs and was very diligent and hardworking throughout. Due to the high conflict, contentiousness of my case, we ended up going to trial. Kyle was incredibly prepared, very smart, and cost efficient. He truly cares about his clients and fights for what is important to them. I would highly recommend Kyle to anyone looking for an aggressive attorney in the courtroom but also compassionate and dedicated to pursuing the best outcome possible.

When I was served with divorce papers, I needed to find a lawyer who could not only protect me legally, but also help me make decisions that would preserve my young daughter's happiness as much as possible. A trusted coworker referred me to Kyle, and I was relieved to find that he had much knowledge and professional experience in handling cases similar to mine. Kyle demonstrated a sincere interest in helping me with my case. He explained the pros and cons of various ideas I had, and answered my questions completely in terms that I could understand. He embraced and encouraged a mediation process, led me to an incredible mediator. He was there every step of the way during a process that would have been daunting without him. I felt protected, relieved and prepared because of the work and effort Kyle put towards the drafting and documentation before the mediation and after the mediation took place. Kyle conducted himself in a professional, courteous, and intelligent manner in and out of the courtroom. During the court proceeding he articulated points and articles with excellent command, and demonstrated a thorough understanding of procedure and protocol. The outcome was excellent for both parties, and in turn, ensured the best possible outcome for my daughter's happiness and future. I have come to trust Kyle explicitly, and I highly recommend him to anyone needing sound legal advice and representation.

I really don't think I could have picked a better lawyer to help me with my child custody case. Kyle was just amazing. His knowledge of child custody cases and procedures is unmatched in my opinion. He was able to put all of my concerns to rest and again, his expertise in child custody cases made me feel so confident in how we addressed my case which also made for no surprises throughout the process. He was always very response and available almost anytime when things came up and was very easy to get a hold of, promptly returning calls and emails. If it wasn't for Kyle I wouldn't be enjoying and getting the time I have with my 10 year old son. I cannot thank Kyle enough for all he has done for my family!! I very highly recommend Kyle!!

We hired John to complete our estate planning. He did a great job listing out our options on what we could do so we could make an informed decision on which approach to do. It was also clear on what the costs would be to complete the work. After we decided he had an excellent summary to help us identify our assets and other pertinent information to complete the documents. This was completed quickly and accurately. After a review we identified a change we would like to do. He quickly updated the documents and sent a final draft. We then set up an appointment to sign and notarize and received all documentation as well as next steps we needed to do. I sent an e-mail while changing some personal documents and the response was quick and clear. Extremely pleased with John's work and process to complete things quickly and clearly.

The majority partner in my business attempted to shut me out of the business. After my first vacation in four years, I came back to a locked office door and a response that our relationship "needed to change." I told my business partner that changing the locks on the door meant that we had no relationship. Steve made sure to understand the intricacies of my case, and felt confident that we had a strong case as a trial date was set. The other side suggested mediation, which we did, and we settled before trial. I've heard that it's a good settlement if both sides are unhappy, but I think I was more happy than the other side -- so I think I came out a little ahead. Overall, I'm very happy with how Steve handled my case and would use him again in a heartbeat.

It is simple, when dealing with lawyers over the past 20 years, it is hard to find one that can explain what and why we handle customers a certain way. As a business man you may get hard headed like I am, and want to do things that would not do well for yourself in business if take certain actions. Steve is able to negotiate and or guide me to do what will be in the best interest of my company, without causing a lot of litigation. Long and short, in all the time I have been in business Steve has been the most responsive and helpful attorney I have ever had. Easy to talk with, good to explain, and great guidance with our legal/business strategy.

I am a real estate agent in the Lake Minnetonka area. I have had the opportunity to work with Haugan Law office on both personal transactions and business transactions. In my personal transactions, Todd Haugan has worked diligently to close several transactions in a timely manner. Todd has also stepped in where legal representation was necessary and was able to bring the issues to a favorable outcome. I have also worked with Todd on many short sale transactions. Mr. Haugan was diligent about making sure our clients received a full release of deficiency and satisfaction of all mortgages. On a few occasions, the bank was not willing to cooperate in the short sale but once Mr. Haugan stepped in, we were able to close the sale with no further obligation to the client. I appreciate his tenacity and dedication to helping his clients and would definitely recommend him and his firm. Christine Coldwell

He was unprofessional, difficult to deal with and sneaky. I wouldn't recommend Todd Haugan to anyone. He is not worth the fees he charges...especially due to his lack of concern for me as his client or my case. Horrible experience with him. I'm not surprised he was previously suspended. My family is fairly big. The sibling living with Mom was the POA. Some months after Mom's death, the siblings began the gargantuan task of cleaning the house since it was not showable/sellable in its initial condition. It became apparent through unearthed paperwork that some things were not kosher with the handling of the finances, so 4 siblings wanted our POA to nominate a different sibling as PR and get a different attorney. This was an option allowed in the will and we set up a family meeting to break the news. However, in some amazing timing, the POA and this attorney went ahead with filing probate without informing anyone beforehand. I found out by getting a notice in the mail which made me quite livid. This attorney said she was honoring Mom's wishes, but since Mom's will allowed options, it would be more accurate to say she was honoring the version that miraculously allowed both her and the POA to keep their jobs. Due to the fact that so much money had already been lost, the siblings found themselves forced to accept this unacceptable situation because changing it would be even more costly. In talking with this attorney, I certainly felt talked down to and not listened to with respect or taken seriously. She got her payday, but this family has sustained permanent damage. Sure, the financial ineptitude was a bitter pill to swallow for those who are actually good stewards of money, but more importantly, this sibling has destroyed all trust in her going forward. The best thing I can say about this experience is it taught me how I DON'T want to treat my family/heirs in estate planning and beyond. Needless to say, I don't recommend this attorney to anyone. I would also advise anyone who has read this far to do what you can to avoid probate. My Mom's estate was modest and with better planning, probate could've been avoided.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
